America's Grand Tour?

So I stumbled upon this today. Any one hear anything about this? Is this legit? No way major teams are going to do this.

They first announced this two years ago. It was postponed. Then again. And I very much doubt it will ever happen.

If you think that's weird, search for the original route. It was the definition of insane. 400km stages, 150km mountain time trials, etc etc etc.

If it becomes PT then major teams have to do it. But i highly doubt that something like this will happen, 3 GT are more then enough.

It was such a laugh. I definitely remember the first talks and the route presentation.

Not gonna lie, I wish something like this did exist in America.

this won't happen.

And if it does, it's doomed to fail

Yeah, it sounded too outrageous to be possible. If this was actually going to happen, it's very under-publicized

You could make an amazing route with a tour of the US (or of north america if you prefer).

But who would watch? You have thousands of fans in the european grand tours. Youd get hundreds in a tour of the USA.

I don't think it will ever happen.

I would think that but watching the Tour of California I would disagree. It was full of fans on the side.

And the one time I've seen a big professional race, the final crit in St. Louis at the end of Missouri, there were big crowds. Plus, people had traveled from all over to go see it. With the proposed course cutting right through middle America, all the cycling fans would go see it, if there were any big names at all.

The really good suggestion I heard was to rotate the area of the country the race was held in.

For instance:

Year 1 - Race takes part in the eastern US
Year 2 - Race takes part in the northern US
Year 3 - Race takes part in the western US
Year 4 - Race takes part in the southern US
Year 5 - start over

You get the point

Wouldn't work as I imagine there is much less popularity for cycling in mississippi than Colorado etc.

You could find people in every area of the country who could make the race popular

If they could make it work, I think it would be awesome. And they have to start it while Lance is riding, as cycling will drop in popularity in the US, when he retires for real.
But 21 stages may be too much. How are the ProTour teams gonna make a race like this fit their calendar?

I love the route from coast to coast though:

Ha, yeah, except they fly from Indiana to Colorado. That is about half of the distance across. But at least they avoid those 400k stages Pfft

dave92
probably not gonna happen, but if it did i could get to 5 of those stages in decent driving time, interesting

One of the major problems is broadcasting to european countries, as not many TV stations want to pay big cash for showing cycling late at night.
