Criteriums are all well and good, but theres nothing like a proper road stage!
Fuyu Li certainly seems to think so, he goes off on the attack eith 108km to go. Perhaps the view is not shared though? Its going to be a solo breakaway
It did at least make it easy to take the first intermediate sprint. Behind him, Sieberg brough Van Stayen to the front and he eased to 2nd - Wim Stroetinga taking 3rd
56km to go, Li holds 2 minutes on the peleton as Qatarian Tareq Esmaeli decides to go off the front
The wind starts to pick up and behind him, the peleton becomes splintered
Most notably, Alex Ardila Cano is struggling right at the back alongside Colby, Dyadichkin and Inoue
Next intermediate sprint. First 2 places are obvious, but 3rd is a tight battle with Hutchinson edging out Van Stayen
The pack remains fully stretched out though
And it is also clear that there is no way back for Ardila Cano.
Up front, and the sprinters involved in that sprint make the foolish decision of staying ahead of the pack for 10km. With 20km to go that could seriously hinder their sprint when some of the sprinters, such as race leader Richeze, did not go for it
Esmaeli is caught with 17km to go, but Li is still over a minute ahead! A very strong rider from him, but it ends with capture with 8km to go
Hold on ... is that a Santander rider on the floor? Yes! Galparsoro tumbles over right at the front of the peleton. Inevitably, more follow
Biggest name down is Tom Stubbe. Olympus' GC leader. They send 4 men back to help, but the riders arent going to be coming back
We near the sprint and Sieberg is on the front once again, having relayed for a bit earlier in the stage. Surprisingly, Van Stayen seems unable to keep his wheel
Even more surprisingly, Richeze is way back. What is he doing?
Jack Wolfskin and Wal-Mart have their sprinter and lead out man at the front, but Perez Arrieta has no lead out man. And so he goes first
And wow, look at him go!
Where is the response? Where IS the response? Theres a couple of NOS riders on the front on the left, but Rijntjes and Ulrich are not sprinters at all
At last, Raul Turano goes for it. But Perez Arrieta is already cruising
Great win for Santander. Easy win for Santander
2nd again for Raul Turano - but with Richeze nowhere, its enough for the race lead
Trailing in right at the back, 3 minutes down, its Alex Ardila Cano. Disastrous for him.
