Don't worry, it's not a white supremasist thread. i'm doing an essay at uni about the rise and fall of the Ku Klux Klan in America from 1865 to 1871 and just wondered if any of the American members knew anything about it?
I been reading for the last coupls of days and still don't really understand it. so far i've worked out that the Klan began to become political following the Radical Republicans taking over from the Moderates in the running of the reconstruction process and forcing the 14th amendment onto the south and removing the Democrartic Governments from power. The 14th amendment gave the newly freed slaves the vote and the Klan basically went around trying to scare the newly freed slaves from using this vote.
and thats about it i don't think i've explained it too well. basically i need to know what effected what if you know what i mean.
if anyone has any knowledge on the subject it would be a great help, or even just a cronological list of when things happened. |

don't think so. religion didn't have anything to do with it. they were just a group of southern confederates who didn't like the fact that the North Radical Republicans were demanding they let the 'freedmen' vote and have equal rights so they went around killing and scaring freedmen to stop them voting and southern republicans for forcing amendment 14 on them.
i think. |

that was another group the 'Knights of the White Camellia'. very similar but differnet group.
it's a very simple reason though maybe one that is too silly to be thought as serious.

I can't remember whether it was related or unrelated but they look somewhat similar.
One could guess at why the chose the color white..

i think the pointed hoods and crosses came leter when they did become a religious group and they could well have taken influence from those groups in spain.
but originally it was simply a cloth mask or hood which they wore to cover their face. |

They actually started as a social group and the hoods and sheets were part of the attire at the meetings so that they could remain anonymous during "partying" activities....They actually did not start as a racist group, but changed over time.
The History Channel did a really good documentary on them here in the states, you may be able to find it online. |

correct. they started as a group of 6 friends who were bored and had nothing to do so they started a secret group to play practical jokes on the local community. one of their favourite jokes was to dress up in white sheets and pretend to be ghosts and scare local people.
it wasn't until later when other people saw the group and thought it would be a good way of controlling the local black community and set up there own groups, dressed in white robes and hoods and the KKK we know today grew from there. though it isn't the same one today as in 1865 as they completely died out in the 1870's and were revived in the 1920's.
your cornflake is in the post |
