Send a guy. If he fails, send another.
Keep doing that until you either get bottles or get desperate. not a very good tactic i know...

try get bottles going downhill, or in a section where the wind comes from the front or from the back. then there's no problem.
the strong wind only causes problems if its a cross wind. |

i send my leat inportant riders to the back to get bottles because if you send your team leader an he gets dropped of the back your in big trouble. i tend to do it on flat road or if a mountain or hill stage before the foot of the mountain or hill, Conserves energy than if you go an get bottles on a hill or mountain. |

I'll generally wait until there's a split of some sort.
If the group is really strung out, I won't send anyone back. I'll take my chances and wait. |

Someone once told about a very interesting tactic: Send a guy to the back while protecting him with another rider. That way it increases the chance of getting him back, because the protector's energy will be used up instead of the energy of the guy carrying the water bottles (or at least the water carrier will be able to move to the front with less effort).
Also, if the pack's really strung out, send the guy with the best flat stat (if you're riding on a flat road) since it'll consume less energy to get to the front after getting the water bottles. The same goes for downhill sections, send the guy with the best DH stat - just don't send the leader himself
Although I really hate it when he has crossed half the pack and then the pack splits, so my water carrier suddenly loses all the bottles he has before he reaches the front group and has to go back to get new ones. |

But when you ask a rider to go get water, he'll forget all about protection (settings are reset). At least that's how I remember it. |

Yeah, but if he is protected by another guy, he won't.
What annoys me is that sometimes your water boy can grab bottles, move up through the pack, if there is a wind or the pack is otherwise broken up and he is suddenly not in the same group as the others, he apparently drops the bottles, because even if the group is reassembled shortly after, he has to go all the way back to pick up bottles once more. Can be really frustrating on high-wind stages. |

I let all riders protect my captain. And he goes at the back. When he have the bottles, the other have too |
