I think it's a great thing but still sometimes it shows that some users are there though they are offline.

As far as I know, it's updated every 5th minute. It'd probably lag the forum too much if it updated more often than that.

I think that it shows that the user is there on the last thread he visited before he loged out. I don't think it's because those 5 minutes cause if you leave the thread without logging out it shows that you aren't there after just a few seconds
