Stage 1 Report

The Tour of Northern Europe opens with 200 flat kilometers in the Netherlands. The top 3 sprinters in the race are the favorites: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/yor.png Cullaigh, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/elc.png Farantakis, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/ced.png Philipsen. If the break doesn’t take them they will have 2 sprint points to fight over as well.

12k gone and 5k to the first sprint point. 3 riders out front (pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/rab.png Van den Berg, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/lph.png Ulloa, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/tti.png Kamyshev) but the peloton hasn’t given up yet as the gap is still only 28 seconds.

The threesome manages to hang on to their narrow lead and Van Den Berg takes the points ahead of Ulloa.

But Xero, Evonik and Carlsberg continue their chase and the break is brought back with 172k to go.

There must have been some GC concerns there because none of those teams feature in the next break. Instead, the next escapees are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/grm.png Van Gestel, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/dna.png Heinrich. The have 51 seconds on the peloton, in between are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/lph.png Malacarne and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/dna.png Vangheluwe. Those two have been trying to bridge for a while and are struggling. Almost 50k gone in the race and still no settled break. It is the sprinter’s team chasing this time.

The second pair are brought back with 143k to go and the peloton eases with the remaining two breakaway riders opening about a 1’30 gap a few k later but then Evonik, Carlsberg and Xero begin to chase again.

Under the 1k banner King Power has collapsed and it is the big three going head-to-head. Groves in the wind on his own in the middle.

400 meters and it is Philipsen versus Farantakis. Philipsen won this stage last year for Polar. Cullaigh didn’t time his launch as well and has lost ground on the far left. The other riders in the first two rows all lead out men.
