The Race
Welcome to England where we see some (but not all) of the best cobblers of the world battling it out, including the first meeting of Per and Pedersen this season.
There was huge interest in the break today, but after some late attackers are brought back a group of 15 is allowed to get away. These 15 are
Bayer and Losch
Ballerini
Bdadou
Brockhoff
Budenieks
Crause
Maciejuk
Mayrhofer
Per
Ruiz
Sanikwathi
Stash
Van Dijke
Van Tricht
With 133 km to go the gap is down under 4 minutes again after maxing near to 5 minutes. There’s probably still some time left until the real action begins.
The gap is down another minute with 96 km to go. There’s not much happening apart from the occasional puncture. This time it’s Brockhoffs turn.
The German actually wasn’t able to make it back to the front and is back in the peloton as is Losch who suffered a similar fade. The chase is also taking its toll in the peloton which is down to 116 riders.
The break is over with about 60 km to go and Mengoulas used this to attack. Probably more importantly there are further splits in the peloton. Among others Kamyshev and Daniel are in the first chasing group while the first big group is down to 27 riders.
The Greek is brought back right before the last bigger climb. Those dropped earlier are still trying to get back to the front while Garcia Cortina adds another puncture for his team. Maybe a new wheels supplier is on the menu there?
And only some km later the leading group is down to 15 riders. Among those dropped are Stallaert and Siric.
But the latter was only badly positioned and easily bridged across in the climb. At the top the leading group is down to 12 riders. Those 12 are Pedersen, Per, Senechal, Teunissen, Siric, Neilands, Jacobs, Ovsyannikov, Benoot, Gaday, Polanc and Mengoulas.
With 37 km to go it seems like the winner will be in this group.
Ferreira, Owen, Rossi and Barthe made it back in the descent.
Per was the first favourite to attack, but the counter attack from Pedersen actually gets a gap. But with 20 km to go it’s nothing decisive yet.
Pedersen has a gap of 17’’ after the third to last climb. There are 10 chasers left after those four who came back earlier were dropped again and were joined by Neilands.
And the gap is further increasing! With 12 km to go it’s up to 41’’ and the 10 chasers seem to be hesitating. Everyone else is already more than 1’30 behind this group.
When entering the penultimate climb the Dane has a lead of 1’16. He should have this one in the bag.
When the gap arrived at 2 minutes Polanc decided he could go faster on his own and attacked. Senechal is trying to follow him.
The two don’t get away, but Benoot and Mengoulas are dropped as a result.
At the front Pedersen arrives at the finish line unimpressed.
The chasers weren’t even able to sprint. Per takes 2nd place by just dropping the others from the front.
Jacobs takes the last podium spot in front of Gaday and Senechal. Ovsyannikov and Siric finish in 6th and 7th.
Behind them Polanc beats Teunissen for 8th place. Mengoulas takes a surprising 10th place with Benoot in 11th.
Congratulations to Pedersen who could never been brought back once he had a small gap!
