Stage 3 Report

With Stage 3 the race moves into its GC phase. A hilly stage today, three Cat 2’s and a Cat 1. The last Cat 2 peaking just 7k from the end in Castelraimondo, a tough 225.7k altogether. There are 2 sprint points along the way.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/ubs.png Kudus is the punchiest of the GC guys the organizers think he will try and leverage that.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S3/favs.jpg

About 10k gone and the break is just starting the first climb, the Cat 2 Foce Dello Scopetone (3.5k at 6.6%). pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/lph.png Aguilar Mendez, wearing white on behalf of race leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/fas.png Hopkins, has been out front since the flag dropped, but he has just been joined by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/grm.png Svestad-Bardseng and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/cko.png Sprenger (wearing the Liechtenstein national champion’s jersey). They have 24 seconds on the peloton and 13 seconds on the EA duo of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/eav.png Affini and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/eav.png Munton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S3/01.jpg

Svestad-Bardseng just gets the points ahead of Sprenger. Aguilar Mendez spent too much energy earlier and is back in the peloton which is 58 seconds behind. The EA pair are at 27 seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S3/02.jpg

Munton, Affini and Aguilar Mendez get the rest of the points. The latter from the front of the peloton.

With 200k to go the EA pair reach the front two to form the break of the day. They have 3’08. In 69k they will start the main climb, the Cat 1 Poggio San Romualdo. Before then two sprint points.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S3/03.jpg

Tough luck for Affini as he punctures with 160k to go. The breaks lead is over 9 minutes and the peloton has only just begun to take an interest in chasing.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S3/04.jpg

Affini rejoins without too much trouble. Rabobank (Kielich) and Gjensidige (Madsen) have taken accountability for the chase and have begun to gradually reduce the lead.

Sprenger wins the first sprint with S-B second and then Munton. The lead is 7’40 with 130k to go. Same two teams chasing.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S3/05.jpg

The first two are reversed at the second sprint. Munton third again. Peloton at 5’49. About 9k to the start of the Cat 1. Gjensidige and Rabobank have added more riders to the chase. The climb is 10k at 6.9%

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S3/06.jpg

Affini drops early in the climb, he has been working for Munton.

1k banner on the climb and Munton attacks. Sprenger is immediately dropped. Peloton back to 6’30 as the chase has eased. 78k left in the stage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S3/07.jpg

Munton is solo by the top, he takes 16 points. Peloton at 6’35 with Sony – Force India (Rekita) on the front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S3/08.jpg

Svestad-Bardseng takes 2nd on the climb, he and Munton are tied on 22 points. Sprenger 3rd on 18. There are still two Cat 2 climbs but they come right before the finish. But the break might make it as their lead is growing as they tackle the downhill.

50k to go for the peloton, ahead the 3 leaders are back together but a furious chase from Rabobank (Van der Kooij, Vader) and Gjensidige (Della Lunga, Arensman, Tjotta, Hagenes) has cut their lead to 3’09. Only a handful of riders have been dropped from the peloton. A lot of effort being put forth by the Norwegians and their leader appears to be Seigle, maybe McCormick were misjudging his capabilities when they released him in the offseason.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S3/09.jpg

22.5k to go, the break is on to the Crispiero (3.4k at 7.8%). They will tackle this climb twice, each ascent is worth Cat 2 points and the second one finishes just 8k from the finish. The race is in the balance as the gap is 1’57 but Sony – Force India are back on the front with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/sfi.png Rekita as Rabobank and Gjensidige appear to have relented.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S3/10.jpg

2k to climb for the peloton, it doesn’t look good for the break as their lead is down to 1’02 and Evonik with, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/evo.png Eenkhoorn, are taking an interest for the first time.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S3/11.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/eav.png Munton attacks and drops the other two just before the top, that should give him the KOM jersey tomorrow. Peloton at 57 seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S3/12.jpg

The first attack comes from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/lpu.png Van Poucke, just as they start the downhill. Still about 170 riders in the peloton including the race leader.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S3/13.jpg

Van Poucke tries a few times and eventually gets a small gap, sweeping up pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/grm.png Svestad-Bardseng and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/cko.png Sprenger. Munton is 36 seconds ahead and about 500 meters from starting the 2nd ascent of the Crispiero.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S3/14.jpg

Van Poucke is brought back by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/xr0.png Bazhkou and Munton has a 40 second gap as he passes under the 10k banner. None of the Evonik riders visible is PHL, it is mostly domestiques near the front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S3/15.jpg

Munton’s day is over with about 2k to climb. Van Poucke on the front. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/tti.pngSivakov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/ino.png Stüssi, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/ubs.png Kudus are sitting in about 6th, 7th and 8th wheel.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S3/16.jpg

With about 300 meters to climb pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/lpu.png Van Poucke tries again. 138 riders left in the peloton with many sprinters dropped but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/fas.png Hopkins is still going strong and can be seen in the foreground in about 5th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S3/17.jpg

Van Poucke gets a small gap but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/pol.png Mas comes out of the pack to grab his wheel. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/gzl.png Vervaeke leads the chase.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S3/18.jpg

1k banner is misleading, really about 2k to go. The attackers have been caught. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/gct.png Arensman has pushed to the front, maybe Gjensidige were workin for him. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/xr0.png Martinez in 2nd wheel.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S3/19.jpg

Arensman opens the sprint from 1.4k out, he isn’t a great sprinter but neither are most of the guys behind him. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/gct.png Seigle is about 4th wheel though so maybe a set up for hm.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S3/20.jpg

600 meters, Arensman has been swamped, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/lpu.png Potocki on the front. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/rab.png Formolo, who has kept his powder dry up to now, is chasing him. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/rab.png Dima provided a lead out for the Italian champion. Behind them is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/gzl.png Brkic. Then Seigle, Arensman and Martinez.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S3/21.jpg

200 meters. Formolo has a slight lead on Brkic and Potocki. The rest of the peloton coming fast now, including Hopkins who should hold his jersey another day.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S3/22.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/rab.png Formolo wins it, he managed that finish perfectly. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/gzl.png Brkic 2nd, that is the kind of depth result Gazelle have made famous. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/lpu.png Potocki holds on for third.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S3/23.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/xr0.png Martinez is 4th ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/gct.png Arensman, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/jur.png Janssen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/tti.png Sivakov. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/ubs.png Kudus is 8th and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/gct.png Seigle is 9th. Two in the top 10 isn’t a bad outcome for Gjensidige. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/evo.png Lecuisinier gets up for 10th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Tirreno/S3/24.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/fas.png Hopkins finishes 11th and retains all 3 jerseys. King Power still the team’s leader.
