Stage 3
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S3/P.jpg

To conclude the Tour of Tasmania, we have the time trial. With a lot of riders, including most of the best time trialists, on the same time, we're in for an exciting finale. Let's get right to it.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S3/01.jpg

After the tough stage yesterday, we see some strong time trialists that struggled on the hills very early on. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/eav.png Tanfield sets a strong time of 21’16, holding off teammate pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/eav.png Pelikan by 17 seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S3/02.jpg

One of the more prominent victims of poor positioning and/or poor tactical choices was pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/pum.png Kämna, who would’ve hoped for a later start time today. He does seem to convert that anger into energy, though, setting a new best time by 3 seconds. He was 3 seconds slower at the intermediate time check, which indicates that the slopes of up to 4% on the hillier second part of the course may have an impact here. A few minutes later, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/pum.png O’Brien finishes provisional third when he crosses the line.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S3/03.jpg

The likes of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/cdb.png Norsgaard, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/lpu.png Siddikov and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/lpu.png Weemaes, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/xr0.png Van Niekerk and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/pol.png Durbridge all have decent times that put them in the provisional Top 10, but it’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/elc.png Christapopoulos who comes closest to the lead, just two seconds slower than pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/pum.png Kämna.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S3/04.jpg

After the first roughly 50 riders, here’s the current leaderboard.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S3/05.jpg

It takes a while for someone to break into the Top 10 again, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/jur.png Fernandes finally does it with a strong time, just 9 seconds off the lead, besting teammates pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/jur.png Jussaume and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/jur.png Darbellay handily. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/lpu.png Sajnok comes through a bit later, another second faster – provisional 4th place for the Pole.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S3/06.jpg

But it’s a different Pole – and former teammate to those Jura riders – who gives us the first new best time in a while! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/sfi.png Rekita clocks in at 21’18, one second faster than pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/pum.png Kämna.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S3/07.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/pol.png Krul, on recon for team leader Bernal, is the next rider to crack the Top 10, which leaves us with this provisional ranking with 100 riders left on the road.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S3/08.jpg

97th in the GC before today was pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/sfi.png Zmorka, who won the time trial last year and shows his ambitions to do so again. Coming close to lapping three riders at once, he shreds all previous times by almost half a minute at 20’50.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S3/09.jpg

Around 20 riders later, we have two strong times back to back from two National Champions. First, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/tti.png Roy Goldstein is provisional 6th, 34 seconds slower than Zmorka …

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S3/10.jpg

… then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/snz.png Howson takes that 6th place by two seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S3/11.jpg

A potential threat for Zmorka then comes in the form of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/pol.png Mullen, last year’s overall winner. He’s clearly a step above everyone else, but a step below Zmorka at the same time. At 21’04, he’s 14 seconds slower than the Ukranian, and exactly 14 seconds faster than Rakita, who’s now in third.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S3/12.jpg

Not third for long, though: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/tti.png Zakarin takes that spot as he crosses the line – at 21’08, he’s just four seconds slower than Mullen, a very solid effort. The Russian champion is also one of the first couple of riders who finished on the same time as the stage winner yesterday, meaning this is a strong bid for a great GC finish.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S3/13.jpg

With that in mind, here’s the leaderboard with just 50 riders left on the road.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S3/14.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/tti.png Razumov posts the next notable time of 21’20, giving Tinkoff a 1-2 in the provisional GC, but only for a moment. Because then, we’re in the thick of the fight for not just the win on the day, but also the overall victory. World Champion pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/eav.png Würtz is on the road … but at the intermediate time check, he’s 3 seconds behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/sfi.png Zmorka! And at the finish line … it's 5! No stage win today for Würtz, he’s now looking at where this puts him in the GC.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S3/15.jpg

Würtz’ teammate pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/eav.png Munton is the next to throw his hat in the ring. He beats Razumov, but remains in provisional third in the GC behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/tti.png Zakarin with a time of 21’14. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/yor.png Oliveira follows next and is 3 seconds slower than Munton, still a decent ride by the Portuguese champ.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S3/16.jpg

Compared to those times, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/gzl.png Leknessund is a bit of a disappointment. He’s 14 seconds slower than Oliveira, not even inside the provisional Top 25 on the day at this point. But then comes pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/kng.png Mano and he beats all of the above. 4th best time of the day, just two seconds slower than pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/pol.png Mullen.

With the Top 16 left on the road and some of the remaining top favorites to come, here’s a quick look at the current provisional Top 10 in the GC:

1.pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/eav.png Würtz
2.pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/kng.png Mano+ 10
3. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/tti.png Zakarin+ 12
4.pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/eav.png Munton+ 18
5.pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/yor.png Oliveira+ 21
6.pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/tti.png Razumov+ 24
7.pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/tti.png Vlasov+ 34
8.pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/gzl.png Leknessund+ 35
9.pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/ino.png Firdaus+ 37
10.pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/kng.png Van Baarle+ 38

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S3/17.jpg

Seven riders are left on the road that can realistically crack those Top 10. The first is Italian Champion pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/kng.png Ganna. But he doesn’t seem to have his best day and comes in one second slower than pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/eav.png Munton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S3/18.jpg

Next up is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/ino.png Dunbar. He couldn’t get a leg up on his rivals in the hills yesterday, but he’s still an elite pure time trialist, too, and he shows that. He misses pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/sfi.png Zmorka’s time by fractions of a second, but that also means he’s six seconds faster than pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/eav.png Würtz!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S3/19.jpg

The comes the greatest rider in this race’s history - pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/fas.png Phinney. He’s won this race for 4 years straight between 2019 and 2022, and he gives it one more very good go here today. Faster than pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/eav.png Munton by 4 seconds, he’s provisionally 5th overall.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S3/20.jpg

And the American remains there even after pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/rab.png Evenepoel crosses the finish line. The Belgian prodigy will easily win the white jersey as expected, but he’s a second slower than pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/kng.png Ganna on the day, which will be enough for “only” a lower-end Top 10 finish.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S3/21.jpg

Which is more than can be said about pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/evo.png Herregodts. The Evonik leader has a relatively poor day, finishing on the same time as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/kng.png Van Baarle – ultimately, that’ll prove good enough for just 17th overall.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S3/22.jpg

Two riders remain to challenge pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/sfi.png Zmorka’s stage win and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/ino.png Dunbar’s GC victory – and one in particular. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/eav.png Tom Wirtgen wants to end his string of four consecutive podium finishes without a win – and it looks very good for him. Taking a commanding lead at the intermediate time check already, he leaves everyone in the dust and takes the new best time by 13 seconds!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S3/23.jpg

It is too much to ask of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/pol.png Bernal to beat such a strong performance by perhaps the best time trialist around, and indeed he can’t. But he comes close to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/eav.png Würtz, just three seconds behind, and will leave Australia with a 4th place overall.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S3/24.jpg

To conclude, let’s give some flowers to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/akm.png Groenewegen, who comes away from this race with a stage win, two days in yellow, and the green jersey. A great start to the season for defending champs Aker – MOT.

And with that concludes the first stage race of the 2025 season! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/eav.png Wirtgen finally breaks the Tasmania curse and takes his first win of the year, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/ino.png Dunbar gives Indosat Ooredoo a strong opener in their return to PT, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/eav.png Würtz in third shows that maybe this two-TT-beasts strategy might end up working out nicely for EA Vesuvio. Hope you enjoyed, see you next time!
