Tour of Tasmania

Stage 3
To conclude the Tour of Tasmania, we have the time trial. With a lot of riders, including most of the best time trialists, on the same time, we're in for an exciting finale. Let's get right to it.
After the tough stage yesterday, we see some strong time trialists that struggled on the hills very early on. Tanfield sets a strong time of 21’16, holding off teammate Pelikan by 17 seconds.
One of the more prominent victims of poor positioning and/or poor tactical choices was Kämna, who would’ve hoped for a later start time today. He does seem to convert that anger into energy, though, setting a new best time by 3 seconds. He was 3 seconds slower at the intermediate time check, which indicates that the slopes of up to 4% on the hillier second part of the course may have an impact here. A few minutes later, O’Brien finishes provisional third when he crosses the line.
The likes of Norsgaard, Siddikov and Weemaes, Van Niekerk and Durbridge all have decent times that put them in the provisional Top 10, but it’s Christapopoulos who comes closest to the lead, just two seconds slower than Kämna.
After the first roughly 50 riders, here’s the current leaderboard.
It takes a while for someone to break into the Top 10 again, Fernandes finally does it with a strong time, just 9 seconds off the lead, besting teammates Jussaume and Darbellay handily. Sajnok comes through a bit later, another second faster – provisional 4th place for the Pole.
But it’s a different Pole – and former teammate to those Jura riders – who gives us the first new best time in a while! Rekita clocks in at 21’18, one second faster than Kämna.
Krul, on recon for team leader Bernal, is the next rider to crack the Top 10, which leaves us with this provisional ranking with 100 riders left on the road.
97th in the GC before today was Zmorka, who won the time trial last year and shows his ambitions to do so again. Coming close to lapping three riders at once, he shreds all previous times by almost half a minute at 20’50.
Around 20 riders later, we have two strong times back to back from two National Champions. First, Roy Goldstein is provisional 6th, 34 seconds slower than Zmorka …
… then Howson takes that 6th place by two seconds.
A potential threat for Zmorka then comes in the form of Mullen, last year’s overall winner. He’s clearly a step above everyone else, but a step below Zmorka at the same time. At 21’04, he’s 14 seconds slower than the Ukranian, and exactly 14 seconds faster than Rakita, who’s now in third.
Not third for long, though: Zakarin takes that spot as he crosses the line – at 21’08, he’s just four seconds slower than Mullen, a very solid effort. The Russian champion is also one of the first couple of riders who finished on the same time as the stage winner yesterday, meaning this is a strong bid for a great GC finish.
With that in mind, here’s the leaderboard with just 50 riders left on the road.
Razumov posts the next notable time of 21’20, giving Tinkoff a 1-2 in the provisional GC, but only for a moment. Because then, we’re in the thick of the fight for not just the win on the day, but also the overall victory. World Champion Würtz is on the road … but at the intermediate time check, he’s 3 seconds behind Zmorka! And at the finish line … it's 5! No stage win today for Würtz, he’s now looking at where this puts him in the GC.
Würtz’ teammate Munton is the next to throw his hat in the ring. He beats Razumov, but remains in provisional third in the GC behind Zakarin with a time of 21’14. Oliveira follows next and is 3 seconds slower than Munton, still a decent ride by the Portuguese champ.
Compared to those times, Leknessund is a bit of a disappointment. He’s 14 seconds slower than Oliveira, not even inside the provisional Top 25 on the day at this point. But then comes Mano and he beats all of the above. 4th best time of the day, just two seconds slower than Mullen.
With the Top 16 left on the road and some of the remaining top favorites to come, here’s a quick look at the current provisional Top 10 in the GC:
1. Würtz2. Mano+ 10 3. Zakarin+ 12 4. Munton+ 18 5. Oliveira+ 21 6. Razumov+ 24 7. Vlasov+ 34 8. Leknessund+ 35 9. Firdaus+ 37 10. Van Baarle+ 38
Seven riders are left on the road that can realistically crack those Top 10. The first is Italian Champion Ganna. But he doesn’t seem to have his best day and comes in one second slower than Munton.
Next up is Dunbar. He couldn’t get a leg up on his rivals in the hills yesterday, but he’s still an elite pure time trialist, too, and he shows that. He misses Zmorka’s time by fractions of a second, but that also means he’s six seconds faster than Würtz!
The comes the greatest rider in this race’s history - Phinney. He’s won this race for 4 years straight between 2019 and 2022, and he gives it one more very good go here today. Faster than Munton by 4 seconds, he’s provisionally 5th overall.
And the American remains there even after Evenepoel crosses the finish line. The Belgian prodigy will easily win the white jersey as expected, but he’s a second slower than Ganna on the day, which will be enough for “only” a lower-end Top 10 finish.
Which is more than can be said about Herregodts. The Evonik leader has a relatively poor day, finishing on the same time as Van Baarle – ultimately, that’ll prove good enough for just 17th overall.
Two riders remain to challenge Zmorka’s stage win and Dunbar’s GC victory – and one in particular. Tom Wirtgen wants to end his string of four consecutive podium finishes without a win – and it looks very good for him. Taking a commanding lead at the intermediate time check already, he leaves everyone in the dust and takes the new best time by 13 seconds!
It is too much to ask of Bernal to beat such a strong performance by perhaps the best time trialist around, and indeed he can’t. But he comes close to Würtz, just three seconds behind, and will leave Australia with a 4th place overall.
To conclude, let’s give some flowers to Groenewegen, who comes away from this race with a stage win, two days in yellow, and the green jersey. A great start to the season for defending champs Aker – MOT.
And with that concludes the first stage race of the 2025 season! Wirtgen finally breaks the Tasmania curse and takes his first win of the year, Dunbar gives Indosat Ooredoo a strong opener in their return to PT, and Würtz in third shows that maybe this two-TT-beasts strategy might end up working out nicely for EA Vesuvio. Hope you enjoyed, see you next time!
