The Race

Welcome to Costa Rica for the season opener of the CT! It’s a hilly classic parcours with an uphill finish, so it’s no surprise the best puncheurs of the division are the favourites for today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/C2/SanJose/PCM0001.jpg

It’s raining today, but that didn’t hinder the riders to fight hard for being part of the break of the day. It took the entire first climb, but in the end a group of 14 got away from the peloton. Those 14 are:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/ofg.png Koide and Todome
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/gla.png Mannion and Meehan
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/spr.png Bagnara
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/anz.png Brown
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/ipc.png Delgado Gonzales
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/taf.png Hansen
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/ple.png Miholjevic
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/eth.png Nunes
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/iec.png Segaert
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/kmm.png Teutenberg
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/kno.png Vainio
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/t3a.png Vera Hernandez

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/C2/SanJose/PCM0002.jpg

With 100 km to go the gap is at 3’19 after maxing at around 5’30. It’s not much happening right now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/C2/SanJose/PCM0003.jpg

With 59 km to go we probably enter the phase in the race when the first long-range attacks could start. There are still 6 climbs of varying lengths to come. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/ofg.png Todome was dropped from the break earlier, the remaining 13 leaders still have a gap of 2 minutes.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/C2/SanJose/PCM0004.jpg

The climbing takes its toll and the break is caught with 46 km to go. The peloton is also down to 99 riders (including the former break).

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/C2/SanJose/PCM0005.jpg

And shortly afterwards we have the first dangerous attack! The favourites pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/eus.png Turgis and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/tzk.png Carr are on the move, and the French has pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/eus.png Serrano with him to do much of the work. 25’’ behind is the peloton which is down to 38 riders. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/spr.png Lazkano is the biggest name missing.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/C2/SanJose/PCM0006.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/eus.png Serrano wasn’t able to work for long, so 10 km later we’re down to 2 leaders. The chasing group is suffering too and is down to 23 riders while the gap hasn’t changed much. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/taf.png Hoelgaard, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/kno.png Kanepejs and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/kmm.png Gall are amongst those dropped.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/C2/SanJose/PCM0007.jpg

With 29 km (and 4 climbs) to go the attackers are caught. 25 riders are at the front now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/C2/SanJose/PCM0008.jpg

The next two climbs shuffled the peloton a bit (f.e. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/kmm.png Gall made it back), but with 15 km to go there are still 25 riders in front. The first chasers are nearly 1’30 behind, so it’s pretty safe to say today’s winner is in the first group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/C2/SanJose/PCM0009.jpg

7 km to go and the leaders arrive at the penultimate climb. The picture is essentially the same as before.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/C2/SanJose/PCM0010.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/kmm.png Masnada is the first to attack. With him are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/enb.png Moscon, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/eth.png Sagan, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/enb.png Watson, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/eth.png Vendrame and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/tzk.png Carr.
Meanwhile pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/esk.png Lafay, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/esk.png Dieteren and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/pbc.png Holmes are dropped from the chasers.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/C2/SanJose/PCM0011.jpg

Over the top of the hill and in the short descent 8 more riders bridge across to the leaders. Those seven are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/ipc.png Paez, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/esk.png Stocek, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/ipc.png Rojas, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/pbc.png Vincent, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/t3a.png Lagane, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/eth.png Gladysh, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/eus.png Turgis and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/taf.png Dyrnes. In return pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/enb.png Watson has been dropped, so 13 riders enter the final 2.2 km in the lead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/C2/SanJose/PCM0012.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/enb.png Moscon puts in a horrendous pace. He dropped pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/taf.png Dyrnes, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/eth.png Gladysh, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/tzk.png Carr, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/eth.png Vendrame and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/ipc.png Rojas this way, but his main competitors are still there.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/C2/SanJose/PCM0013.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/esk.png Stocek, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/eus.png Turgis and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/pbc.png Vincent are the next victims of the pace. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/t3a.png Lagane also looks cooked. There are 700 m to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/C2/SanJose/PCM0014.jpg

The Mauritian is dropped with 400 m to go, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/enb.png Moscon is still powering at the front. Is someone still able to launch a sprint?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/C2/SanJose/PCM0015.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/eth.png Sagan was, but in the end it’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/kmm.png Masnada who takes the win! The Slovakian veteran comes in 2nd, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/enb.png Moscon has to be content with 3rd.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/C2/SanJose/PCM0016.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/ipc.png Paez in 4th makes for a great debut for his team. Behind him pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/t3a.png Lagane and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/pbc.png Vincent finish in 5th and 6th. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/eus.png Turgis is 7th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/C2/SanJose/PCM0017.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/esk.png Stocek, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/ple.png Velasco and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/taf.png Dyrnes complete the top 10.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/C2/SanJose/PCM0018.jpg

Congratulations to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/kmm.png Masnada, who is not only rewarded for making the decisive attack but also shows why his team is one of the division’s top favourites this season!
