Stage 1
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S1/P.jpg

Welcome to Australia for the first stage of the Tour of Tasmania. We’re all expecting a sprint finish here, and you can see the bookmakers’ favorites above. But there are also some mountain points available to entice breakaway riders – let’s see how things unfold.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S1/01.jpg

We’re not even a couple hundred meters past the start line and UBS is immediately on the front foot with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/ubs.png Weiss setting the first attack. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/snz.png Marryatt follows as wild card team Spark Team NZ wants to leave its mark on this race.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S1/02.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/ced.png Currie quickly catches up to his compatriot, and then a third Kiwi attacks, this time pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/eko.png Pringle, who wants to make sure both PCT teams are adequately represented. Serbian champ pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/ced.png Duric and Russian rider pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/snz.png Syritsa then make it two for both Cedevita and Spark.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S1/03.jpg

However, six riders up front is too much for the sprinter teams. All of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/elc.png ELCO – ABEA, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/akm.png Aker – MOT, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/tti.png Tinkoff Team – La Datcha and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/lph.png Los Pollos Hermanos have a hand in bringing the latter three back with some urgency.

Then however, they sit back and let the former three go. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/ubs.png Weiss collects the first six mountain points of the season, putting himself in pole position to wear the mountain jersey at the end of the day.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S1/04.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/ced.png Currie proves to be the quickest at the intermediate sprint, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/snz.png Marryatt beating pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/ubs.png Weiss by a sliver. Both Currie and Weiss are eligible for the U25 classification and those bonus seconds could be the ticket for a stint in white tomorrow, if they manage to finish with the same time as the peloton – or win, of course.

That never seems likely on a first stage, but at this point, 35 kilometres into the race, they have a respectable gap of six minutes on the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S1/05.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S1/06.jpg

The gap peaked at eight minutes but is already coming down again as the trio fights for the second mountain sprint. The same team as mentioned above lead the chase in the peloton. At the top of the climb, we seem to have the reverse order of the first sprint, but there is apparently a discrepancy between the line on the road and the measuring point from the race organization. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/ubs.png Weiss, who was only overtaken late by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/snz.png Marryatt, is ranked as second here and gains the advantage in the mountain classification as a result.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S1/07.jpg

No controversy at the second intermediate sprint though, where pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/ced.png Currie makes it two for two.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S1/08.jpg

The peloton was very keen to control the race all day and they make the catch with still 18 kilometers to go, so we can jump directly into the sprint preparations. It’s a muddy picture with 9 kilometers to go as multiple teams try to set up their sprint trains – but they get in each other’s way a lot.

On the left side, Los Pollos Hermanos currently have the upper hand for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/lph.png Halvorsen, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/lpu.png Sajnok tries to bring pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/lpu.png Bonifazio to the front in their wheel.

To the right, Aker – MOT look well for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/akm.png Groenewegen, while Tinkoff for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov and ELCO for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/elc.png Farantakis struggle to make their way through all that traffic.

In between all of that, the individual sprinters fight for positions. Those include pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/pol.png Minali, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/cdb.png Kragh Andersen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/pum.png Gross, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/jur.png Szarka, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/fas.png Vesely and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/xr0.png Lutsyshyn.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S1/09.jpg

With 5 kilometres to go, the road widens and three trains emerge, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov only has pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/tti.png Goldstein left ahead of him. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/xr0.png Lutsyshyn now has his own leadout with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/xr0.png Houle, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/ced.png Ackermann, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/rab.png Van der Kooij, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/sfi.png Hofstetter and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/evo.png Kurianov have now appeared in promising positions. No major sprinter has been caught out.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S1/10.jpg

Three kilometers to go and the sprint is about to start. Same three trains, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/lpu.png Sajnok is back to bring pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/lpu.png Bonifazio to the front. Feels early, but there is a tailwind of 11 kph going, which might help.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S1/11.jpg

With the flamme rouge in sight, the final leadouts are in the wind. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/akm.png Räim is doing a terrific job for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/akm.png Groenewegen, who now has a bunch of riders in his slipstream, including pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/lpu.png Bonifazio, who swung over after Lierse’s own leadout didn’t quite work.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/elc.png Farantakis meanwhile has lost pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/elc.png Koumpetos’ wheel for a second, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/lph.png Ruiz can’t quite keep pace with the others at the moment.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S1/12.jpg

The main sprinters wait until just 700 meters are left and then they go into the wind. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/akm.png Groenewegen has a small advantage over pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/elc.png Farantakis, then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/cdb.png Kragh Andersen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/sfi.png Hofstetter, but many riders are still very much in contention.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S1/13.jpg

400 meters and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/akm.png Groenewegen takes a potentially decisive lead. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/elc.png Farantakis struggles to keep up on the left side, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/fas.png Vesely and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/lpu.png Bonifazio look very strong over the middle.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S1/14.jpg

But will they be too late? 200 meters to go and the Top 3 are still pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/akm.png Groenewegen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/cdb.png Kragh Andersen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/elc.png Farantakis!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S1/15.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/akm.png Groenewegen wins! A brillant leadout pays off for Aker – MOT! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/cdb.png Kragh Andersen finishes second, he had the perfect wheel and the staying power to keep up – even almost challenge for the win in the end. Then it looks very, very close for third place …

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S1/16.jpg

… which ultimately goes to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/lpu.png Bonifazio! Some team support and then good instincts by the Italian bring Lierse a first highlight in their first race following their long-awaited promotion. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/elc.png Farantakis can’t quite convert his team’s hard work, but the potential is still evident.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/fas.png Vesely finishes fifth, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/lph.png Halvorsen might be a bit disappointed with sixth, but in this closely matched field, LPH’s leadout didn’t quite prove up to the task.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S1/17.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/sfi.png Hofstetter finishes seventh, a very respectable result for him, as is eigth for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/jur.png Szarka (unfortunately cut off at the bottom of the screenshot, apologies for that) and ninth for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/kng.png Phonarjthan. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/pum.png Gross rounds out the Top 10 ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/ced.png Ackermann, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/pol.png Minali and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/rab.png Van der Kooij.

In 14th place, we have today’s biggest disappointment, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov. Tinkoff did a lot of work throughout the day, but perhaps they left too much on the road too early. Ultimately, they botched the leadout and Samolenkov himself evidently wasn’t strong enough to repair it.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S1/18.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/ced.png Currie and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/snz.png Marryatt unfortunately end up in a group behind the peloton, meaning no white jersey for either of them. That instead goes to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/eko.png Pringle, a nice start to the career for the Ekoi rookie after already showing his colors in the early part of the stage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/ubs.png Weiss will be in the king of the mountain jersey as mentioned, though with 31 points available tomorrow compared to his 10, he will likely need to attack again to defend it.

Will pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/akm.png Groenewegen be able to defend his yellow jersey? Doubtful, but not impossible. Join us again tomorrow to find out!
