We’re in the Italian Alps for the national road race championship. Cattaneo, Penasa, Carboni, Formolo, Fabbro, and Manfredi are the top names. Cattaneo has 4 Italian TT titles but has never won the road race.
Lierse (the only team with 8 riders), Gazelle and Air New Zealand do the chasing and a break of 9 amateurs is closed down with 12k to go. Immediately, Formolo and Fabbro attack.
They get a small gap but some solid pacemaking from Bongiorno first brings back Fabbro and then with 8.5k to go Formolo.
Minions and Gazelle control the pace until just before the 5k banner when Penasa and Carboni attack.
Cattaneo tries to follow but can’t quite make the junction and with 4k to go the two attackers have 17 seconds over a 12-rider chase group. Manfredi the most notable rider missing from the front two groups.
Work from Cattaneo and then Formolo brings 5 riders back to the leaders with 3k to go. Also making it across are Ciccone, Senni, and Conci. Fabbro just off the back of the leaders.
Under 2k to go, Ciccone and Conci dropped and the two Gazelle riders are struggling. Fabbro never made it across.
900 meters to and a little dig from Formolo gets him some daylight.
That gap proves decisive and Formolo wins the 2024 Italian National Championship.
Cattaneo is 2nd ahead of Penasa.
