Here we are on the final day of l'Avenir. We already know who the best sprinter is: Jago WILLEMS has already all but secured the points classification. It is mathematically possible for Leo HAYTER to snatch it away at the final moment but he will need to not only win the stage, but also secure points at the intermediate sprint in Freiburg - some 76 kilometres and two mountain passes from the finish. Speaking of mountains, today is a monster. Things start off relatively slow, with nearly 70 kilometres of riding down a false descent before we cross the Rhin into Allemagne. That gave plenty of time for a breakaway to form and, despite a bit of a tug of war between the escapees and HAYTER's domestiques, we eventually saw a group of 12 get away.
There are a number of decently strong riders in this group, including a couple of names you might recognise from earlier stages. With few flat kilometres in the finale, there is real potential for them to take the stage win. The favourites won't be too worried about them (outside of their own interest in bonus seconds) as they are all more than nine minutes down on the general classification. So, who are this dozen? Husein SELIMOVIC, Walter CALZONI, Carlos CANAL, Mathias VACEK, Henrik Teslo FJELLHEIM, Ilham Sultansyah HEFNAR, Embret SVESTAD-BARDSENG, James MORRIS BERROA, Cesar David GUAVITA, Zygimantas MATUZEVICIUS, Javier SERRANO, Edvin LOVIDIUS.
The majority of today's challenge involves a winding parcour through the Schwarzwald. This meant that the break had to tackle two climbs either side of the 100 kilometre mark: Sirnitz (13km @ 6.1%) and Notschrei (11km @ 6.8%). Not quite as monstrous as d'Aubique and the Hautacam, but still two climbs worthy of first categorisation. SVESTAD-BARDSENG came into these first mountain sprints with an advantage over his peers, having already picked up points at some point in time. A second and third-placing was enough to move him to 30 total points, still just short of Carlos RODRIGUEZ and Alekss KRASTS. SELIMOVIC and HEFNAR - with 28 and 20, respectively - were the other big scorers. Ah, winning the little fourth category climb in Freiburg, the Wonnhaldesattel, was enough to move SVESTAD-BARDSENG into the lead of the provisional classification.
The riders will have two bites of the Kandelpass today. First they will climb the northern face from Waldkirch, 12 kilometres at a very continuous 8.0%. Only then, after a brief foray to Sankt Märgen (5.8km @ 5.6%) before tackling the southern face from Sankt Peter (8.0km @ 6.2%). Our television coverage will only be live for those final two ascents, but things are in something of a state as we tune in. Much of the responsibility for controlling the breakaway had been placed on the shoulders of Esow ALBEN, who really struggled to maintain momentum in the mountains. Even through the flat kilometres in and out of Freiburg the peloton struggled to bring the gap down from its peak at around 10 minutes. Then Carlos CANAL flew up the climb from Waldkirch and absolutely blew up the breakaway. SVESTAD-BARDSENG extended his lead in the provisional polkadots by being fourth. The peloton, being led by ELCO - ABEA, is hovering at about 8'00" behind CANAL and SELIMOVIC (who managed to rejoin the Spaniard on the descent). CALZONI, HEFNAR and SVESTAD-BARDSENG are about 2'00" back.
Our leading duo have started to play with each other. They think they have enough of a cushion to the favourites. With the pace dropping the chasing trio has clawed their way back to within a minute of the front; the peloton is coming through + 6'00". CANAL knows he can drop SELIMOVIC, he has done it before. For now, though, he is just testing the waters.
CANAL with another acceleration but, again, SELIMOVIC is ready for it. He'll have to try better than that if he wants to break free! Here SELIMOVIC goes, showing his competitor how it is done. The elastic stretched, then stretched some more; for a moment it looked like CANAL might be able to reel it back, but now we're seeing the final decisive acceleration through the mountain sprint. With SVESTAD-BARDSENG again 4th, his lead over SELIMOVIC is down to just five points. Provided the Bosnian wins the stage, the Norwegian will need to come at least third to take the polkadots.
Lennert VAN EETVELT lights things up in the peloton! He has very rapidly bridged across to a fading FJELLHEIM. Given his poor previous performances, the Belgian has a lot of time to make up and not a lot of ground to do it in. Perhaps that is why HAYTER is taking his time to respond? Johannes STAUNE-MITTET shuts things down.
We are partway up the final climb of this edition of l'Avenir, and there is a lot happening. Our two leaders have come back together and are cooperating to try and maintain their lead over the peloton. That is down under three minutes with five kilometres of climbing still to come. If SELIMOVIC can stay away then the mountain classification is almost certainly his, even if the stage win does slip from his fingers. That's because SVESTAD-BARDSENG is back in the peloton. His arrival coincides with VAN EETVELT's second attempt at making a departure. For some reason Bostjan MURN is leading the chase?
The dream is over. VAN EETVELT has bridged up to the break and with Edoardo ZAMBANINI leading the peloton they'll surely make the catch too soon enough. Oh? Maybe not. The two escapees are trying to stay with the move! Ah. Nevermind. They went for a few metres but very quickly cracked. Their adventures are over for today.
We are nearly at the finish. We have come under la flamme rouge. I think HAYTER has secured the overall victory. Even with bonus seconds, RODRIGUEZ is going to need a gap of at least 10". He may be the fastest moving right now - he certainly isn't going down without a fight - but HAYTER is right on his wheel.
At the end he was exhausted, too exhausted even to celebrate, but VAN EETVELT timed his move perfectly. It won't change his misfortune in the general classification, but at least he will be able to head home with his head held high. Speaking of the GC: there aren't going to be any changes on the podium, HAYTER has won it. Panagiotis KARATSIVIS will move past Kevin VAUQUELIN with third today.
