pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/Others/Avenir/S4/00.jpg

There were plenty of attacks early on; although there wasn't quite as much difficulty in getting a breakaway established as we suffered through yesterday. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/brc.png Bralirwa are again looking to control the race, this time joined by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/eko.png Ekoi - Le Creuset; is it for the maillot jaune or for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/brc.png Lennert VAN EETVELT (+ 1'00")? That duo did not want to let more than a quintet up the road, but we had plenty more than five riders interested in getting away. There are a 46 points available in the Mountain classification; six third category climbs being joined by a singular second category ascent: 5.9km @ 4.7% up the Côte de Viallard. Hence the significant interest. At the end of the day though it was a case of first in, first out. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/t3a.png Podium Ambition has the numbers advantage here: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/t3a.png Nicholas NARRAWAY being joined by the returning pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/t3a.png Gian Carlos HERNANDEZ MORAN. I wouldn't be looking to either of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/twm.png Ole THEILER or pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/gla.png Daniel YON HIN to upset the pair either.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/Others/Avenir/S4/01.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/t3a.png HERNANDEZ MORAN took the first climb to Saint-Genest (2.0km @ 3.1%). That despite a close challenge by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/gla.png YON HIN, who benefited from a shallowing out of the slope. The same was true on the Côte de Barrot (1.8km @ 4.6%). The next climb was the Blot-l'Eglise (2.7km @ 5.0%), although rather than placing the competition at the summit of the climb the organisers have instead elected to place it at the end of short descent. That meant the order between the front two were reversed on that one. The final climb before our live TV coverage begins is Côte de Faubayoux. Although it is rated as just another third category climb, this is the first real challenge of the day: 2.9km @ 6.6% doesn't sound too bad, until you realise the maximum gradient is nearly 15%! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/gla.png YON HIN again pipped pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/t3a.png HERNANDEZ MORAN to the maximum points; if one were to read into these things, that might suggest the Cuban is starting to tire.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/Others/Avenir/S4/02.jpg

Heavy slopes indeed for the riders as we begin our coverage. They are on the Côte de Chalusset (3.3 km @ 5.6%) now. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/gla.png Daniel YON HIN has managed to acquire 22 mountain points so far today. That isn't (yet) enough to overcome pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/t3a.png Gian Carlos HERNANDEZ MORAN, who currently has 24. The peloton is less than two minutes back, being led by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/brc.png Lameck Marco KULINDWA and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/zal.png Kristians BELOHVOSCIKS. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/gla.png YON HIN goes early and... oh, oh he is done. Head down, switching back-and-forth across the road. He isn't the only one though, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/twm.png THEILER is equally exhausted and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/t3a.png NARRAWAY doesn't want to move past either of them. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/t3a.png HERNANDEZ MORAN though? He has just extended his lead atop the mountain classification.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/Others/Avenir/S4/03.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/zal.png Gustas RAUGALA and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/zal.png Gal GLIVAR bring the breakaway back in short order. There are still a maximum of 16 points on offer today, which means that pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/t3a.png HERNANDEZ MORAN has secured his jersey for another day - provided there are no attacks from the peloton. That doesn't look like a likely possibility though, the pace is remaining high as we approach the intermediate sprint in Châtel-Guyon. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/zal.png Olav KOOIJ tried to keep himself close to the front, but was caught out by an 8½% bump. Instead pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/eko.png Laurence PITHIE shows his potential as a dual-speciality talent.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/Others/Avenir/S4/04.jpg

Up the Côte de Viallard (5.9km @ 4.7%) we go. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/elc.png Ioannis VAROTSOS is trying to push the pace, nobody looks overly eager to attack. They go rolling through the mountain sprint all still together - this won't have any impact on that classification, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/zal.png KOOIJ takes the maximum points. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/elc.png Mats WENZEL and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/snz.png Reuben THOMPSON come through to keep the pace high... On the slopes of Creux Morel (5.1km @ 5.3%) pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/brc.png Lennert VAN EETVELT finally shows his face at the front. He needs this one ridden fast in order to wear down his competitors, he knows he will lose even more time on the TT-bike. He doesn't want to commit himself too fully though, so the peloton is spread across road as we reach the flat section at the top of the hill.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/Others/Avenir/S4/05.jpg

They launch the sprint from a long way out. They being pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/brc.png VAN EETVELT, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/snz.png Quinn SIMMONS and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/tir.png Max KABAS. The former and latter quickly drop backwards, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/snz.png SIMMONS seems to be holding out well at the front. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/tir.png Thibau NYS and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mcy.png Kevin GRANADOS are making up ground though. Wait a moment! Is that a flash of yellow? It is! It's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/brc.png Jago WILLEMS. Where on Earth has he come from? Surely he can't do it again? Not a third time!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/Others/Avenir/S4/06.jpg

He has been absolutely unstoppable thus far. He is turning into this year's version of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/zpc.png Biniam GIRMAY. He keeps the maillot jaune for another day and will almost certainly be in the maillot vert at the end of the race. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/snz.png SIMMONS did well to hold off the other (human) challengers for second. Several of our GC favourites were also alert, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lph.png Leo HAYTER the best placed in 6th. Several riders lost time today, just not anybody of consequence. Perhaps tomorrow will finally be the day?
