After yesterday's prologue saw the first blow landed in the fight for the general classification, thing are likely to be calmer today. Our route today takes the riders through 175 kilometres of rolling Burgundian vineyards, from Vézelay in the North to Vichy in the South. Although that is enough to bring the peloton into the foothills of the Massif Central, the parcour is relatively flat. The only climb comes rather early on, and comes in at just 5.2 kilometres @ 2.8%, the Cote de Bazoches will only play a role in determining who wears the polkadots tomorrow.
That particular honour will go to K Charles . Grenada is not known for its rich riding history but, thanks to the efforts of Podium Ambition's Caribbean project, we now habe what might very well be the first Grenadian to wear a leader's jersey in MGUCI history. E N Madsen picked up the maximum points through the intermediate sprints in Bazolles and Dompierre-sur-Besbre; he isn't any threat to the maillot jaune, having lost 23" yesterday.
In fact, none of our breakaway — the aforementioned duo having also been joined by A Holm Jørgensen — are particularly dangerous. The sprinters' teams had been willing to give them quite a long leash, with the gap soaring to over eight minutes at one point in time. That was closed without any real struggle thanks to the combined efforts of Zalgiris & Bralirwa. We switch to the live TV coverage as the catch is made with within 10 kilometres of the finish.
There is perhaps a bit of inexperience on display here. Zalgiris are burning through a lot of matches trying to keep the pace high at the front of the pack. There are still more than three kilometres remaining and only G Raugala is left to protect O Kooij . The Dutch phenom has an opportunity to move himself into the overall lead through bonus seconfs, provided his team doesn't blow it. As expected J Becomes is nowhere near the front.
J E Habimana is doing an excellent job here. He was content to let his competitors ward off any late attacks;, instead preserving his energy for exactly this moment; with a burst of speed he is dragging J Willems clear of the competition. Kooij is awake to the danger though. He knows that he cannot demand more from Raugala , the poor lad has nothing left to give. Instead it is a quick switch across the road and into Willems's wheeltracks!
It is a big move from Habimana , it is a long move from Habimana , but his effort is not infinite. He is already finished, with about 1500 metres of road still in front of the riders. Willems isn't ready to make his move just yet, which enables H Page and A Stalberg to move closer to the front.
He only needed a short pause though. Willems is off before we even get under the red kite. His momentary hesitation might even have been tactical; it has certainly caught out some of his competitors. Not Kooij though, nor K Granados who is now the thurd wheel is a train. Page too is, in effect, following the move, although that may merely be because he had intended to go himself.
It is going to be decided between this quartet. There is a gap of three bikelengthy back to Stalberg and Q Simmons with only 500m to the finish. Kooij has kept himself well sheltered from the wind up until this point. Now is the moment to move, however. He is going to need a big acceleration to get round Willems — the Belgian is showing no a signs of tiring despite all the time he has spent in the wind. Granados , too, is looking to make an impact.
Willems has it! He backed himself completely, launching an extraordinary distance from the line. It was close at the end. Granados was making up a lot of grounce extremely rapidly and even Page had managed to find a second wind. Kooij will have to be content with wearing the maillot jaune overnight. The peloton did get quite strung out towards the finish, but the adjudicators did not see fit to award any gaps.
