It is time for the Grand Départ of the 2024 edition of Tour de l’Avenir. As has been the tradition since 2014, that means a short prologue. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/eav.png Bob JUNGELS was the winner a decade ago; let us see who follows today as the jeunes traverse just over six kilometres through the Bois de Vincennes in the heart of Paris.

The home fans will doubtlessly be happy that their man pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/eko.png Kevin VAUQUELIN who was the early pacesetter. Not only is he one of the favourites to take the stage, but his time of 7'05" sets him up well for his overall campaign.

Just quite how good the Frenchman's time was became evident as it withstood multiple challengers, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/brc.png Lennert VAN EETVELT notable for losing a significant amount of time. The hotseat would finally shift under the weight of yet another Lithuanian timetrial talent; with a time of 7'02", pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/zal.png Gustas RAUGALA is clearly looking to follow in the footsteps of countrymen pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/zal.png BENIUSIS and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/zal.png KMIELIAUSKAS.

It didn't take long before the time to beat came tumbling down yet further.pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/brc.png Renus UHIRIWE came startlingly close, being edged out by mere milliseconds. Then it was the turn of some of prologue specialists. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/twm.png Nicholas HEINRICH had looked promising at the intermediate timecheck but faded away in the latter half. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lph.png Finn FISHER-BLACK, by contrast, took the lead with a time of 7'01" - merely a second in it.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/Others/Avenir/S1/AvenirS1_3.jpg

There were a number of riders who took on the challenge of beating the young Kiwi. This included those challenging for the overall - the likes of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ubs.png Robin Juel SKIVILD and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lph.png Leo HAYTER - and the specialists - think pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ubs.png Elia BLUM. However, changeable weather conditions - including a developing headwind on the final stretch - meant that all but one of them fell well short. Even pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ubs.png BLUM, who had been the bookies' pick coming into today, could only manage a 7'12".

The one man capable of mounting a challenge was pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/kmm.png Jenno BERCKMOES. In the prologue last year he managed a middling 36th, before falling to 159th in the overall standings. This time he takes the victory with a time of 6'59".
