Stage 5 Report

Stage 5 of the Tour of Britain is probably a little easier than yesterday although the decisive climb, Snaefell, is the longest climb of the race. It is 6.1k at 6.1% and will be tackled twice with the second time being the finish. Each ascent carries Cat 2 points. Before that there are 3 other Cat 4 climbs. The stage is 198k in total.

The organizers acknowledge the easier stage with the puncheurs back at the top of the favorites list. The top of the climb flattens out so that could favor them. 9 riders are within 20 seconds, so the winner could well be decided on countback.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/Britain/S5/favs.jpg

The last stage takes place on the Isle of Man, so lots of sea views for the riders, stormy seas in this case as it is raining today. Twelve riders have made the break: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/bbc.png Vliegen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/esk.png Pacher, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/esk.png Armirail, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/esk.png Cabanas, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ghn.png Klahan, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/kmm.png Turgis, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/llv.png Borges, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mcy.png Rojas, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/t3a.png Morris Berroa, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/spr.png Putti, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/spz.png Riesebeek, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/taf.png Eriksson. Other than the finish there are 25 KOM points available. Eriksson could win the KOM jersey if he takes 23 of them. None of the others have scored in that competition so they can’t catch leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ghn.png Evangelos, who has 46 points.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/Britain/S5/01.jpg

151k to go, the break is on to the first Cat 4, Round Table, so far little interest in chasing in the peloton and the lead is 6’39.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/Britain/S5/02.jpg

It is very close at the top but Eriksson just gets the maximum. Vliegen and Pacher are the ones who made his life hard.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/Britain/S5/03.jpg

After letting the lead go to 7 minutes the peloton begins to chase and with 122k to go it is down to 5’22. On the front are Tryg (Holm Jorgenson), Bralirwa (Ben Ameur), Zalgiris (Kochetkov, Becis), Indosat (Nugraha), Sony (Yechezkel) and Popo (Ponomar). pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ino.png Bagioli must be feeling better about today with his team active on the front. The break is about to reach the climb of Sulby Glen which they will do twice, each time scoring Cat 4 points.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/Britain/S5/04.jpg

At the top of Sulby Glen Eriksson and the cameraman get caught out by an early attack and the points go to Rojas, Pacher and Turgis.

The second ascent of Sulby Glen sees Riesebeek take the points ahead of Vliegen and Putti. Gap to the peloton is 3’55 with 92k to go. Now a long, mostly flat section prior to the first ascent of Snaefell which begins with about 45k to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/Britain/S5/05.jpg

50k to go for the peloton, they have been going hard. The peloton split for a while but has come back together now. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/bbc.png Powless was the only top 20 GC rider on the wrong side. The break’s lead is 2’09 and they are about to start the climb.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/Britain/S5/06.jpg

By the top only 5 are left at the front , Eriksson makes a bid for the points but is passed by Turgis and Riesebeek. Unless they survive to the end Eriksson will have to settle for 4th in the KOM competition. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ghn.png Evangelos will be the winner. Peloton eased a little on the climb and they are back to 3’02.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/Britain/S5/07.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/sfi.png Franco leads a 108-rider peloton over the top. The finish is about 2k beyond the end of the climb which will help the faster finishers next time round. Gap is 3’24. Up front it is Turgis, Pacher, Rojas, Eriksson, Riesebeek and Putti. Borges, Vliegen and Armirail are only 12 seconds down and should be able to rejoin. The rest probably not.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/Britain/S5/08.jpg

26k to go, the descent further spits the pack leaving 36 in the Yellow Jersey group. The gap isn’t large and no big names seem to have missed the split but we will check if it persists. Up front the 3 metnioned couldn’t close the gap and so 6 riders left in the front group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/Britain/S5/09.jpg

Pack is back to 82 as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/p4e.png Bratashcuk brings back the Borges group. The other 6 still have 2’16 with 14k to go. This could be close (for the stage, the closest in the break is over 6 minutes down on GC). A few of the GC men may not mind the bonus seconds going to the break.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/Britain/S5/10.jpg

5k to climb 7.7k in the stage the break still has 2’27 as the peloton has run out of chasers. Notably none of JEWA, McCormick or UBS, who have the top 3 on GC, have been interested in helping with the chase. Seeing the stage petering out pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/brc.png Tesfatsion has attacked.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/Britain/S5/11.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ubs.png Buchmann and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ino.png Bagioli join Tesfatsion and get a small gap. They also quickly cut the break’s lead in half. 5k in the climb for these riders now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/Britain/S5/12.jpg

About 1k later Buchmann and Bagioli are 40 seconds behind the break. They have 16 seconds on Tesfatsion who has been joined by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/trg.png Demare. Another 31 seconds to the peloton where pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mck.png Narvaez and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mck.png Simmons are working. Buchmann only 8 seconds down on GC, Demare and Tesfatsion only 24.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/Britain/S5/13.jpg

Bagioli and Buchmann are with the break. 32 seconds to the peloton where moves from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/min.png Kinoshita, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/eve.png Stannard and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/tir.png Arndt have brought Demare and Testfatsion back. Peleton at 77 riders, so no big splits yet.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/Britain/S5/14.jpg

5.8k to go, still 3k to climb although we are getting to the easier part, the attacks have lost their momentum with the break caught and a 56-rider front group has formed. The top 20 on GC all accounted for.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/Britain/S5/15.jpg

As they grind their way up the climb the group splits leaving 28 out front with 5k to go (~2k to climb). Powless trying to scamper his way across. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/taf.png Ackermann (15th on GC) is the only top 20 rider dropped.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/Britain/S5/16.jpg

Stanndard tries another attack and is quickly shut down by Bagioli and Arndt. Powless has made it across to this group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/Britain/S5/17.jpg

Arndt and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/min.png Kinoshita put in digs and Kinoshita gets a small gap as they pass the 1k to climb marker. Stanndard and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/eko.png Paret-Peintre lead the chase.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/Britain/S5/18.jpg

Kinoshita is shut down and the next dig comes form Bagioli and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mck.png Sosa, those two attacking together brings the season full circle for McCormick.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/Britain/S5/19.jpg

That attack is also shut down although Sosa continues on the front. The front group is down to 21 which is pretty much the GC top 20. Powless hanging on the back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/Britain/S5/20.jpg

Under the 1k banner the sprint is launched. Tesfatsion and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/sfi.png Benoot on the front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/Britain/S5/21.jpg

500 meters for Tesfatsion. Stannard up to 2nd. He can win the GC if he wins the stage. 2nd would put him in a 3-way tie, assuming Arndt and Sosa don’t take bonus seconds (they are further back). Powless has been gapped. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/spr.png Azman in some trouble.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/Britain/S5/22.jpg

300 meters the gaps are the same, can Tesfatsion hold on for his 2nd stage win? He is 24 seconds down on GC so he can’t win that.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/Britain/S5/23.jpg

What a sprint by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/brc.png Tesfatsion, he wins his 2nd stage of the race. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/eve.png Stannard looks good for 2nd, that could well get him the GC. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/llv.png Chiarello, 8th on GC, has been gapped.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/Britain/S5/24.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ino.png Bagioli edges pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/trg.png Demare for 3rd. Then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/zal.png Sagan and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/sfi.png Benoot.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/Britain/S5/25.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ubs.png Buchmann, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/eko.png Paret-Peintre, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/isa.png Van Niekerk and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/tir.png Arndt complete the top 10.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/Britain/S5/26.jpg

The countback doesn’t go Stannard’s way, he finishes 3rd on GC. A huge win for JEWA and Arndt, could that save them from relegation? Sosa is 2nd on GC. Tesfatsion moves up to 4th, wins the Young Rider jersey and is 2nd on Points to Demare, quite a race for him. The Green Jersey is a nice result for Demare, he also finishes 10th on GC, that could have been 6th if he had found a few inches on Bagioli.

ISA-Hexacta win the teams competition ahead of Minions.

Congrats to Nikias Arndt on the the win.
