Stage 4 Report

Stage 4 moves the riders to England’s Lake District. The key action is 4 ascents of the pairing of Dale Head (2.2k at 10.5%) and the climb to Robinson (1.6k at 10.7%) with the last ascent of the latter being the finish. Dale Head carries Cat 2 points each time while the second climb offers KOM points only at the finish. There are two Cat 4s and two sprint points earlier in the 159k stage.

The organizers think this is one for the hybrids with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mck.png Sosa, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ubs.png Buchmann, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/tir.png Arndt getting 3 stars.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/Britain/S4/favs.jpg

With 10k gone 7 riders at the front of the race with 3 more 40 seconds down. The peloton another 1’12 behind. Not clear if they will allow the extra 3 to go. The front 7 includes KOM leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ghn.png Evangelos (40 points) as well as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mcy.png McCarthy, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ino.png Yudha, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mcy.png Ruiz (5th in KOM, 25 points), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/p4e.png Sitchinava, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ghn.png Zhupa, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/spz.png Medvedev.

As the break hits the first Cat 4, the other three have made it across. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/taf.png Eriksson made it on his own a few K back while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/spr.png Garofoli and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/bbc.png De Marigny-Lagesse are only now making the junction. They will have to work hard not to get dropped on the climb. Peloton at 2’30 being led by Bralirwa and Tryg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/Britain/S4/02.jpg

The best 3 climbers in the group take the points, it is McCarthy, Eriksson and Yudha.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/Britain/S4/03.jpg

The break doesn’t contest the sprint point with 130k to go. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/spr.png Garofoli and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/bbc.png De Marigny-Lagesse were dropped on the climb and have not been able to rejoin.

The second cat 4 goes to the same 3 riders with the only difference being Yudha taking 2nd from Eriksson. Peloton at 5’12 with 122k to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/Britain/S4/04.jpg

The break also ignores the 2nd sprint point, the two dropped riders were never able to rejoin and are almost back in the peloton. Ruiz was dropped on the last climb but did back it back to the leaders. About 20k of flat until the first ascent of our main pair of climbs.

The break are on the first climb of Dale Head, the peloton led by Llapi-Vita (De Pooter), Ekoi (Lapeira), Zalgiris (Vesely), McCormick (Milesi) and Bralirwa (Ben Ameur) have the lead down to 4’37,

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/Britain/S4/05.jpg

Yudha takes first place on the climb ahead of Eriksson, Sitchinava, Evangelos, and Ruiz.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/Britain/S4/06.jpg

With the first ascent to Robinson complete and 80k left in the stage the gap is down to 3’42. The peloton split over Dale Head but they are back together now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/Britain/S4/07.jpg

Yudha and Eriksson take maximum points on the 2nd ascent of Dale Head. The rest of the break dropped on the climb, not clear how many will make it back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/Britain/S4/08.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mck.png Simmons leads the peloton over the Start/Finish line for the 2nd time, 2’15 behind the break. 2 more circuits to go. Up front only Sitchinava has been able to rejoin the other two. They have 1’24 on Medvev, all the rest caught or almost caught.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/Britain/S4/09.jpg

The peloton splits again over the top and is reduced to a group of 67. No big names are behind the split.

40k for the peloton which is back to 100 riders. 2’29 ahead the break is about to begin the 3rd ascent of Dale Head. Working on the front are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/llv.png Borges, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/eko.png Oliveira, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mck.png Seigle, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mck.png Rota, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/eko.png Garibian, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/zal.png Tarvis.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/Britain/S4/10.jpg

With over 1k to climb to Dale Head Yudha drops his companions.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/Britain/S4/11.jpg

Yudha takes maximum points with the other two caught by the peloton on the climb. Seigle leads a 73-rider peloton over the top 49 seconds down on Yudha.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/Britain/S4/12.jpg

Yudha up to 36 KOM points which puts him 3rd behind Evangelos, who was able to pick up small points along the way.

Yudha won’t be able to add to his total as he is caught before the peloton reach Robinson for the 3rd time and begin the final lap. 59-riders in the front group right now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/Britain/S4/13.jpg

Zalgiris seem committed to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/zal.png Kwiatkowski and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/zal.png Sagan goes to the front. 51 riders survive the descent at the front including all 19 from the front group yesterday.

With 12k to go in the stage and 2k to the beginning of the last ascent of Dale Head pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/bbc.png Powless attacks, he is followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/spr.png Azman and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/min.png Vosekalns.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/Britain/S4/14.jpg

That attack is shut down but as they start the climb Powless tries again.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/Britain/S4/15.jpg

That attack is also shut down and as they reach the top it is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/eve.png Stannard who gets a small gap. The front group chasing Stannard is down to 24. Only riders from the front 19 yesterday missing are Sagan and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mck.png Narvaez who were both working for their leaders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/Britain/S4/16.jpg

5k banner, Stanndard is caught. 7 riders have been gapped including pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/brc.png Tesfatsion, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/min.png Kinoshita, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/spr.png Azman, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/spz.png Meurisse from yesterday’s top 19. The gap is small they could still get back on.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/Britain/S4/17.jpg

They are able to get back on, and the group is 24 as the rider hit the final climb. 1.5k to ride.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/Britain/S4/18.jpg

800 meters. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ubs.png Buchmann and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mck.png Sosa are the front two. Next row is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/tir.png Arndt, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/eve.png Stannard, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/sfi.png Benoot and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/zal.png Kwiatkowski. 8 riders have been gapped including Meurisse, Azman and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/taf.png Ackermann. Race leaders Tesfatsion and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/trg.png Demare hanging on for now just out of the shot.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/Britain/S4/19.jpg

400 meters, Sosa still with a slight lead over Buchmann. There is a small gap to the back 5, that is Demare, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/isa.png Cepeda Hernandez, Powless, Tesfatsion and Vosekalns.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/Britain/S4/20.jpg

200 meters, Sosa still with a small lead. Arndt catching Buchman. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/llv.png Chiarello up in to 4th. The gap has closed but Demare and Powless are struggling.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/Britain/S4/21.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mck.png Sosa celebrates with 100 meters to go. His team car screaming in his ear to keep going.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/Britain/S4/22.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ubs.png Buchmann is 2nd, then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/tir.png Arndt, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/llv.png Chiarello and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/zal.png Kwiatkowski.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/Britain/S4/23.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/sfi.png Benoot is 6th, followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/eve.png Stannard, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/isa.png Van Niekerk and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/eko.png Paret-Peintre. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/min.png Kinoshita is 10th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/Britain/S4/24.jpg

The first time gap is 24 seconds before Kinoshita. That makes Arndt the GC leader on countback over Sosa. Buchmann 8 seconds back and Stannard on 12 seconds. The rest of today’s top 9 on 20 seconds which means any of the could theoretically grab the GC win on bonus seconds tomorrow.

Demare still has the points jersey. Tesfatsion still the best young rider, ISA-Hexacta take over the teams lead ahead of Minions.
