Stage 3 Report

Stage 3 is the second chance for the sprinters. 4 sprint points on offer including one after just 12k. Only 1 Cat 4 today so only the riders who scored yesterday will have much interest in that. Just 111k in total.

That moves the Italian into virtual 2nd on GC and gives him the virtual points lead. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mcy.png Murillo gets 3rd.

After the sprint point 3 attackers, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/p4e.png Varga, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/snz.png Yates, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/dvt.png Shen quickly establish a lead. Another foursome, including KOM leader, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/anz.png Van der Haar, is trying to join them but that seems too much for the peloton.

The foursome is closed down and we will have just 3 riders in the break today. With 82k to ride they have 2’23 on the peloton. The rest of the primes come in the second half of the race.

The lead peaks at 3’09 and it is 2’38 with 47k to go as Varga easily wins the second sprint. Yates second.

Varga also beats Yates at the lone climb, a Cat 4. Van der Haar will hold on to his KOM jersey.

Varga also takes the 3rd sprint with 29k to go. Shen was unable to rejoin after getting dropped on the climb. He is at 48 seconds with the peloton at 2’02. Same teams as yesterday working (Simba Cement, Lierse and Kraftwerk).

Shen holds on to take the last points at this sprint point but the peloton looks likely to get to contest the next one which comes 14k from the end of the stage.

Varga drops Yates and takes the last sprint point solo. Yates almost caught, so two spots available to the peloton which is 33 seconds behind. 14 riders have been dropped but no important names.
