Stage 1

Welcome to Dubai for the start of the 14th Tour of America! You’ve heard (i.e. read) right, the organizers decided to start this year’s edition on the other side of the world, so at least there’s nowhere much further away for next year’s edition. But there are rumours this could be the last edition in the current format anyway after a slow decline of startlist quality over the years – something that’ll be apparent this year as well with only 4 PCT teams and 10 CT teams at the start. We’ll have a closer look at the different rider types when they have their first days to shine, but today it’s for the sprinters – and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mck.png Haller is back to further improve his stage-winning record. His chances should be great as he’s actually among the best sprinters here despite his first decline. But also have an eye on pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/lot.png Wouters with his combination of energy stats and great results this season.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/gla.png McCambridge is the first attacker of the day and the race.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/ToA/PCM0002.jpg

He’s only joined by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/bbm.png Todome in the end. At least the intermediate sprints could get interesting for the U25 lead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/ToA/PCM0003.jpg

Dubai might make for some great pictures for the organizers, but the profile doesn’t allow a really interesting stage prior to the sprint. With 97 km to go the gap is around 6 minutes, but there probably won’t happen anything apart from the intermediate sprints.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/ToA/PCM0004.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/bbm.png Todome wins the first sprint.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/ToA/PCM0005.jpg

Back in the peloton pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/anz.png Scully, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/elc.png Edmondson and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ctt.png Houle get the remaining points. The gap is down to 3 minutes.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/ToA/PCM0006.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/bbm.png Todome takes the second sprint as well. If he isn’t dropped later we’ll probably see him again on the podium later.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/ToA/PCM0007.jpg

This time pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mck.png Haller, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/gct.png Consonni and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/esk.png Darbinyan take the points from the pack. They already have the two leaders in sight with 37 km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/ToA/PCM0008.jpg

The catch is made with 15 km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/ToA/PCM0009.jpg

With 3 km to go pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/hrt.png Krieger has his train in front of the pack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/ToA/PCM0010.jpg

Under the kite he still has a leadout left.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/ToA/PCM0011.jpg

The German launches with 600 m to go. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/hrt.png Van Uden is still in the lead though. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mck.png Haller is on his other side. Behind them are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/anz.png Scully, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ctt.png Houle, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/esk.png Darbinyan, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/gct.png Consonni, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/lot.png Wouters and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/elc.png Edmondson.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/ToA/PCM0012.jpg

With 300 m to go pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mck.png Haller is in the lead, but he doesn’t look this good anymore. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/anz.png Scully and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/esk.png Darbinyan are next.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/ToA/PCM0013.jpg

With 200 m to go it’s still the same picture, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/gct.png Consonni tries to find a gap right of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mck.png Haller.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/ToA/PCM0014.jpg

In the end pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mck.png Haller takes the win! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/gct.png Consonni is 2nd in the end, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/anz.png Scully edges out pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/esk.png Darbinyan for 3rd. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/hrt.png Krieger, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/lot.png Wouters, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/elc.png Edmondson, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ctt.png Houle, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/snz.png Mudgway and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/bbm.png McGill complete the top 10.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/ToA/PCM0015.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mck.png Haller obviously adds the GC and points lead to his stage win.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/ToA/PCM0016.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/bbm.png Todome finished in the peloton and is the U25 leader.
