Uppsala Classic - Stage 2
liefwarrior
There was plenty of interest in the breakaway and, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/sct.png Simba Cement - Tanga Fresh unwilling to let the escapees get away in any significant number, there is quite the struggle across the opening kilometres. The first to attack was the legendary pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/hrt.png Adam BLYTHE — it is quite the reduction in status for him, scrimping away in the vain hope of making it into an early morning breakaway. He isn't the only big name looking to make an escape: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/taf.png Vegard BREEN also made an attempt. Perhaps more dangerous were the trio of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/nfz.png Emilien VIENNET, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/twm.png Kevin PREDATSCH and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ghn.png Lukas POSTLBERGER. If any one of them secured both intermediate sprints then they would've moved in to the Top 5 of the General Classification. Unfortunately, it wasn't to be. None would make the final cut. For completeness I'll mention that pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/lpu.png Jenthe BIERMANS and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/hrt.png Guillaume HALDIMANN also showed some interest.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C2/Uppsala/S2/02.jpg

Who then makes up the membership of our breakaway? There is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/dvt.png Gianluca POLLEFLIET, the Belgian neo-pro not contributing a huge amount. By contrast, his peer, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/gct.png Erik Nygaard MADSEN, won both intermediate sprints. That was something of a surprise, given the presence of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ghn.png Darren YOUNG. The wily Samoan wasn't able to make much headway in the points competition, but he did crown himself as the (provisional) King of the Mountains. The final name — and by far the most dangerous insofar as the overall competition is concerned — is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/see.png Faycal HAMZA. The Algerian champion started the day just 1" down in the GC, so with the help of just a handful of bonuses from the intermediate sprints he might have moved into the overall lead. Unfortunately, his competitors refused to grant him any leeway, and he was only able to secure a single bonus second. It will be interesting to see what the adjudicators do with this one.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C2/Uppsala/S2/01.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/eus.png Euskadi - Murias and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/gla.png Glanbia joined forces with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/sct.png Simba Cement - Tanga Fresh in order to control the breakaway's leash. The catch was made without too much difficulty, albeit within the final 10 kilometres. In theory, that means there has been plenty of time for the sprinters' teams to form up their leadouts. However, with just three kilometres left to ride it seems as though nobody is interested in doing so. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/sct.png Noah GRANIGAN is on the front, but he'll have to make a monstrous effort if he is going to drop pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/sct.png Nur Aiman ZARIFF off in a suitable position. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/snz.png Cameron SCOTT, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/nfz.png Bram WELTEN, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/esk.png Hugo HOFSTETTER and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/gct.png Rudy BARBIER make a line immediately behind that duo.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C2/Uppsala/S2/03.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/sct.png GRANIGAN pulls off and the pace does slow. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/sct.png ZARIFF knows that if he will just be providing his competitors with a leadout if he starts sprinting from two kilometres out. The pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/gla.png Glanbia squad are starting to form a train, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/gla.png James ORAM and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/gla.png Sam BENNETT trying to bring pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/gla.png Dylan KENNETT up from a long way back. Wait! What's this? pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/sct.png Dylan PAGE has sniffed out an opportunity. When everybody else took their feet off the gas, he kept it in — now he has leapt away from the pack. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/sct.png ZARIFF accelerates in an effort to catch the last whispers of his wake; this may well prove to be a mistake, his reaction was far too slow.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C2/Uppsala/S2/04.jpg

As he comes under the red kite, it seems that pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/sct.png Dylan PAGE has been forced to sit up. His move may well have had the desired effect though, it is complete chaos behind. The pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/gla.png Glanbia train has completely collapsed and in the ensuing panic pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/gla.png Dylan KENNETT has been hung out to dry. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/sct.png ZARIFF is still at the head of the pack as they enter the twisting final sector, with mostly the same names on his tail, although pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ctt.png Hugo HOULE appears to be looking to force his way through the centre.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C2/Uppsala/S2/05.jpg

It seems that everyone has underestimated pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/sct.png Dylan PAGE. He wasn't sitting up because he'd burnt himself up, he just wanted to take a smooth line through the closing turns. With just 300 metres between him and the finish he still has clear air behind him. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/sct.png ZARIFF is the next rider on the road; he, too, has managed to pull out a bikelength. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ctt.png HOULE has dropped back somewhat, with now pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/twm.png Willi WILLWOHL and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/taf.png Hakon Frengstad BERGER looking to make their way round the near side.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C2/Uppsala/S2/06.jpg

In the end pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/sct.png PAGE has plenty of time to celebrate. The tight corners hampered the acceleration of those behind him, enabling him to cruise to the line following his early launch. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/sct.png Nur Aiman ZARIFF comes through to make it a 1-2; the celebrations on the team bus will be massive tonight. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/gct.png Rudy BARBIER is best of the rest, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/snz.png Cameron SCOTT and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/dvt.png Jingbao ZHAO closing out the Top 5. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/gla.png Dylan KENNETT suffered from his team's poor positioning, only managing 18th. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/sct.png ZARIFF's podium moves him into the overall lead, ahead of teammate pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/sct.png Rohan DENNIS.
