Tour de France
Stage 12 marks a return to the mountains. The 174k stage from Pau to Argelés-Gazost features 1 climb of each type plus a bonus Cat 1 climb before a flat finish. Moser will really be under pressure to control the peloton for the first time. With the stage finish and the big time gaps it wouldn’t be surprising to see a very strong breakaway.
The GC big guns are the favorites though.
Not the best sign for Moser with the Yellow Jersey doing some work to control the size of the break just 7k into the stage (or maybe he is trying to get in it again). Ahead there are two groups of 3. The front group is Mas, Johannessen (White Jersey) and Mansouri (KOM 2nd). They are approaching the summit of the first climb, a Cat 3. In between them and the peloton are Cras, Lampawog, and De Gendt.
Johannessen takes 6 points ahead of Mansouri. The former rider up to 40 points in the KOM, he could have two jerseys by the end of the day. Mansouri on to 64, 2 behind Kudus. Peloton at 2’40, they have relented and there are a lot of additional riders off the front. No big GC threats though, we will recap all the names once they come together.
There are 9 riders up front as they crest the second climb, a Cat 4. Johannessen adds 6 more points ahead of Mas and Barthe. Mansouri only 4th, no points for him. There is another group of 9 riders 28 seconds down and the peloton is at 2’56.
With 145k to go the full break comes together. Their lead is 3’46. The full list:
Van Aert (38 KOM points)
Johannessen (46 points now)
Lampawog
Pinot (12)
Cras, Robeet (17)
Abrahamsen (8), De Gendt (22)
Peters
Delco (1), Rohendi (30)
Mansouri
Barthe, Mas (closest on GC, 17’07)
Fouche, Horvat
Elissonde (41), Hayter
115k to go for the peloton. Moser in full control but they haven’t reached the hard part yet. The break have a lead of 5’20 and are on the Cat 2 climb which is 4.1k at 6.8. After the descent from that they immediately hit the first Cat 1 climb (Col de Marie Blanque, 7.3k at 8.7%)
At the Cat 2 Mas takes maximum points ahead of Johannessen, Rohendi, Pinot and Cras. It does not look like Mansouri is going to get those elusive 3 points he needs to pass Kudus before someone else passes him.
The break reaches the bottom of the Col de Marie Blanque with a lead of 8’19 on the peloton. De Gendt and Robeet were dropped from the break on the last climb and haven’t quite made it back on.
Mas reaches the top of the Col solo, Johannessen and Fouche the next two on the road, 11 seconds down. Another 22 seconds to Cras, Rohendi and Pinot. Peloton at 10’14, Mas and Johannessen into the virtual top 10.
Johannessen up to virtual 2nd in the KOM standings:
With 69k to go, 8 breakaway survivors reach the big climb of the day the Col d’Aubisque, 16.1k at 7.4%. Left up front are Fouche, Johannessen, Delco, Rohendi, Pinot, Elissonde, Cras and Mas. They have 10’53 on the peloton which is being led by Vacek, Otruba and Neuman. Peloton is down to about 80 riders with a big group just split off the back. Riders behind the split include Warchol (21st on GC), Kirsch (13th), Darbellay (17th) and Madouas (16th)
5k to go on the climb for the break. Delco and Elissonde have been dropped. Moser has the lead down to 7’55 with 5 domestiques on the front. The riders dropped from the peloton have not made it back across although Warchol is in a group of 7 riders about half way across the gap.
Pinot is dropped soon after this shot. Rohendi is dropped with 2.7k to climb. Fouche and Cras soon after that.
Johannessen holds off Mas to take maximum points. He now leads in two jerseys. Johannessen is also very good downhill, which could be key in the descent of the final climb. Next group are already 1’30 back. Peloton at 8’13 with Otruba on the front. Moser handling this well so far.
Peloton finishes the Aubisque with a deficit of 9’24.
Mansouri is able to grab a few points to move into 2nd in the KOM competition. Mas up to 7th with 45 points.
Cras and Fouche have rejoined the leaders by the time they reach the final climb, the Cat 1 Col de Spandelles, 10.3k at 8.4. After this climb the final 20k is mostly downhill. Peloton at 7’39.
Parra Bustamente cones to the front for Moser and with 8k to climb the lead is down to 7’04.
With 1k to climb Cras launches an attack. The peloton still at about 7 minutes.
Mas comes around Cras near the top to take maximum points. Fouche cracked and Johannessen hesitated behind him and is now 23 seconds down. Fouche another 14 seconds back. Peloton at 7 minutes with Eenkhoorn riding as all the Moser domestiques are gone from the front.
Johannessen now leads the KOM with 95 points to 67 for Mansouri, 66 for Kudus and 61 for Mas.
14k to go, Johannessen back with the other two, Fouche at 40 seconds. Peloton at 6’53.
5k to go, Johannessen playing it safe on the descent so far but there is about to be another few K of steep drops and he is on the front as they head towards it. Peloton at 7’12, they have crested the last climb without any attacks. Still 50 riders in the peloton.
Johannessen doesn’t get away and they hit the final 2k of flat together. The Norwegian probably the best sprinter in this group. Cras on the front now, he hasn’t got much hope here as his sprint skills are very limited. Peloton still at about 7 minutes, Johannessen and Mas will be in the GC top 10 at the end of the day.
Under the 1k banner, Johannessen challenging Mas for the lead.
500 meters, Johannessen has the lead.
Johannessen easily wins Stage 12, what a day for him, a stage win and two jerseys (his lead in the White will be almost 12 minutes). Mas is 2nd, Cras 3rd. Inkelaar has attacked the peloton on the descent.
Fouche is alone on the road as he takes 4th. Shikai and Pogacar have followed Inkelaar’s attack.
With 2k to go Pogacar is 11 seconds behind Shikai and Inkelaar and 32 seconds in front of the Evonik-led peloton. Ahead he can see Rohendi and Pinot. The rest of the breakaway riders have been caught.
Rohendi takes 5th. Shikai steals 6th from Pinot on the line. Inkelaar is 8th, Pogacar 9th.
Lecuisinier leads home the peloton in 10th.
Mas and Johannessen gain 8’06 on the Yellow Jersey moving them up to 6th and 7th in GC. Pogacar gets the same time as Shikai and both gain a very handy 1’07 on the peloton, moving Pogacar up to 3rd ahead of Haig.
Other than Johannesen taking over Polka Dots no change in the jerseys.
More mountains tomorrow, two Cat 1s and an HC climb in just 64k.
