Tour de France
Stage 11 is the time trial. A serious effort today at 43k, mostly flat but there is a small climb at about the halfway point. There are two time checks along the way the first coming at the top of that climb the second about halfway between the climb and the finish.
Lecuisinier will have counted on today as his chance to build a decisive margin on Kudus, instead he is trying to dig in to Kudus’ incredible 8 minute cushion.
The Grand Tours don’t always attract the top TT riders since the have their own goals to chase but we have a few strong men against the clock who top the favorites list. But a healthy number of GC guys are also among the stage favorites. Lecuisinier and McNulty are are among this group, both will hope to turn their races around today.
Overview
With 192 riders to start today we will split them into three groups. The last group of 20 includes all the top GC men. The rest will be covered in two groups of 86. This first group includes TT specialist Gonzalez Salas who will be the first man to start. Right behind him will be two more specialists in Thomas and Leung.
Recap
Gonzalez Salas finishes in 50’22, that sets a marker.
Thomas is 19 seconds slower at the finish, Leung just 3 seconds slower. He was 14 seconds down at the first check but made up 11 seconds in the second half, suggesting Gonzalez Salas may be vulnerable.
Only one rider even gets within two minutes of the leader until Vernon (starting 15th on the day) knocks Thomas off the podium by 1 second (+0’18 vs Gonzales Salas). He doesn’t last long there as soon after Hansen comes within 3 seconds of the leader, same time as Leung but behind him on the leader board.
Matsuda takes over 4th, 12 seconds down.
Goldstein knocks Matsuda down 1, he is 7 seconds behind the leader.
Then the British Champion, Hayter, sets a new best time. He is an impressive 12 seconds faster than Gonzales Salas. He was 3 seconds down at the first split but made up time over the rest of the course.
Bissegger doesn’t time his effort well, he is just 1 second down on the best time at the first check but ends up 21 seconds down on Hayter, only 6th at the moment.
De Bod comes in 10th, 31 seconds down. He is the last of the TT specialist to start except for the favorite, Ganna. Ganna won’t go until early in the 2nd part of the coverage.
The last rider of note in the group is Herregodts, he is strong on the TT bike but also a solid climber. His balanced skill set works well, he takes over 2nd, 7 seconds down on Hayter.

Gonzalez Salas on the way to the early best time.
Hayter finishes with a new best time.
Herregodts proves climbing skills matter as he slots into 2nd.

Overview
Ganna is really the only rider in this group expected to be relevant.
Recap
Ganna is up by 3 seconds at the first check and expands that to 7 at the second check. At the finish he is the new leader by 16 seconds. Great ride by him, Lecuisinier is probably the only rider left who can challenge that. Maybe McNulty and Haig.
The best of the rest in this group is Habtemichael who takes 14th, at +1’05.

Overview
All the big guns in this group. Lecuisinier can’t get the jersey back today but he could win a stage.
Recap
Almeida could be a leader in his own right but is here to support Haig so his own GC ambitions are modest. He was 20th to start the day and his time of +1’37 (30th) is good enough to take over the virtual GC.
Warchol suffers dropping 3 minutes.
Lopez Nolasco does enough to take over the virtual GC lead, +1’34 on the stage.
Johannessen is not good on the TT bike, he loses 4’02 to Ganna. He started the day with a lead of 4’03 in the young rider jersey so he can’t lose that, but his gaps will be smaller (although a lot of his top competitors aren’t great in TTs either).
Rikunov takes over the virtual GC by finishing 15th on the stage (at the moment), +1’08.
McNulty can’t threaten Ganna but does finish with the 5th best time, +0’30, he takes over the virtual GC lead.
Shikai isn’t quite as strong losing 50 seconds. But he started 2 minutes ahead of the American and is the new virtual leader.
Carthy loses 3’06 but he had a big gap to start, that only costs him one place in the GC, to Shikai.
Aular loses 2’17 that puts him 9 seconds behind Shikai. Shikai’s time comes to an end as Sivakov finishes 43 seconds down on Ganna to take away the virtual yellow.
Padun loses 3’17 and will drop down the standings but Pogacar puts in the 2nd best time by a GC rider, at +0’35 keeping him ahead of Sivakov. The virtual jersey will likely change hands with every rider now.
Haig sets the best time by a GC rider but is 19 seconds slower than Ganna.
Lecuisinier comes a painful 3 seconds shy of the stage win. He led at both time checks but the closing part of the course is pan flat and that is where Ganna had an edge.
Kudus closes out the stage by losing 1’43 to Ganna, 1’40 to Lecuisinier. Moser can live with a GC lead of just 6’42 with the TT out of the way.
Ganna has his 2nd stage win. No change in any of the jerseys.
---------
Aular showing off everyone’s favorite jersey.
Haig on the way to another strong result.
Lecuisinier with a rare appearance in the base Evonik jersey.
Kudus is probably enjoying this much more than he expected to.
