Euskal Bizikleta
--
Stage 4
We’re at the final stage of this year’s Euskal Bizikleta. 23 riders are still within just 28 seconds of GC leader Wouters, hoping to gain a few spots and perhaps even move into the overall lead. The sprinter has proven yesterday that he’s not a terrible climber, but we can’t take another performance like that for granted. The bookies seem to think that this stage favors the more mountain-oriented riders, with guys like Vosekalns or Iturria on the list of favorites – we’ll see how that shakes out.
The mountain classification is also still up for grabs and leader Pibernik wants to make sure he won’t lose it. He has yesterday’s rival Hagen with him again, but the two are quite unlucky with their companion: Hecht is one of those 23 riders in great GC position, and as such, the peloton is not letting them get away easily.
After a while, Pibernik leaves both of them behind. This could be a long, lonely day in the rain for him, but if it means he’ll get to keep his jersey, I’m sure he’ll be more than happy with that.
He’s not going to be alone after all: 40 kilometers into the race, attacks haven’t stopped yet. Hagen and Hecht are caught, and a new wave has brought Iturria, Magnusson and Robov to the front.
After lengthy individual chases, Goncalves, Le Court and Helme join them and we finally have our group of the day. They enter the first climb with around three minutes on the peloton.
Pibernik only manages 4th place at the summit, but as none of the others had any mountain points before today, that’s already all he needs: He will win the mountain classification as long as Vendrame doesn’t manage to score later in the stage.
Pibernik himself likely won’t score any more points, he falls behind on the next climb, the second of three Cat 2 ascents.
Meanwhile, in the peloton, Marzuki controls the pace for Wouters. Tryg once again does very little to shield Demare from the weather conditions, but the same goes for most other sprinters and puncheurs currently huddled near the front.
After winning the KoM sprint, Robov keeps the pace high and Helme can’t keep up anymore. The remaining five riders have four and a half minutes over the peloton.
Over the next kilometers, the breakaway slowed down considerably. This allowed Helme to return, and also dropped the gap to the peloton to just under two minutes. The final 25 kilometers of the race feature one of the tougher climbs the riders have encountered so far, the Alto de Ixua. However, if Wouters makes it across, the Alto de Aiastia is comparatively easy. It should be noted, though, that the sprint today is on a pretty steep slope, too.
The breakaway is caught with 1.5 kilometers left on the climb because literally no one besides Robov was willing to take a single turn. The peloton is still entirely intact, though, no dangers for Wouters just yet.
Into the downhill - Stannard won the KoM sprint by just riding at front, funnily enough ahead of Wouters, who claims 12 mountain points -, we once again see the peloton split. Two of the 23 riders near the GC lead are on the wrong side: Hecht, perhaps due to his earlier breakaway shenanigans, and, very surprisingly, Lagane. The latter even is in a group more than two minutes behind the main peloton, that’s not looking great at all.
Into the first slopes of the final classified climb, Serrano, Grossschartner and Cepeda Hernandez attack. DK Zalgiris have taken charge of the peloton, perhaps planning something for Sagan.
That trio doesn’t get far, but now we have a far more dangerous move: Bagioli and Stannard try their luck!
Januskevicius brings them back, although Stannard remains near the front to claim enough mountain points for third place in that classification. Wouters crosses the final summit among the first 10 or so riders. Things are looking good, but he can’t relax just yet.
Well, we’ve seen this before, haven’t we: Van Niekerk is on the attack!
And the South African remains in front heading into the final 2 kilometers. Wouters is now forced to chase for himself, which puts him in a vulnerable position: A handful of riders can still take yellow away from him with a stage win, chief among them of course Demare (for whom even a second-place finish would be enough if Wouters doesn’t score bonus seconds himself).
Under the red kite, Van Niekerk is caught and Demare immediately attacks Wouters! But remember, the road is about to turn steeply upwards. Behind Van Niekerk and Vakoc, Contreras and Oliveira are in great positions. They’re 5th and 6th in the GC, just 18 seconds behind Wouters.
Demare is in the lead with 600 meters to go. A stage win would at the very least tie him for the lead. But still a long way to go.
Wouters is done, he can now only watch and look. It’s Demare’s race to lose, but many capable riders are chasing him down!
And here they come! Bagioli is about to draw level, Kinoshita follows in his slipstream.
They pass Demare, who has to say goodbye to yellow jersey dreams, but look at the man in the middle of the road: That’s yesterday’s winner Meurisse, who was level on time with the French before today – is he about to win this race?
He is! With his second stage win, Xandro Meurisse crowns himself winner of the 2024 Euskal Bizikleta! What a performance!
Bagioli finishes 2nd, Kinoshita 3rd, both make big strides in the GC, we’ll have to see how far.
Then Stannard finishes 4th with a strong kick to the finish line. Van Niekerk also had a commendable race, he finishes 5th on the day ahead of Benoot and Demare. The French ends up in 3rd place overall, by no means a terrible result, but the execution after stage 1 was just lacking and he might ask himself what could’ve been.
Sagan – not really living up to what the team indicated earlier –, Hirschi and Vosekalns complete the Top 10.
Wouters drags himself over the line in 21st place. He loses yellow on the final day, but this race still must’ve exceeded his wildest imaginations.
Behind Demare, there are four riders level on time. Aggregate positions see Stannard in 4th overall, followed by Kinoshita, Bagioli and Hirschi, in that order. Oliveira is 8th overall, Contreras and Kalaba round out the Top 10 as the next best sprinters. Van Niekerk finishes 11th overall, but you could argue that with his two aggressive rides yesterday and today, there may not have been a more influencial rider in this race.
Today’s biggest loser is Lagane. One poor judgment in positioning that he could never recover from saw him drop from 7th to 80th overall – another tough break for Podium Ambition.
White obviously goes to Bagioli, Meurisse actually snatches green away from Wouters with his two stage wins, Pibernik delivers a nice result to Trans Looney Tunes with his win in the mountain classification. And in the team classification, five teams arrive with the same time, but McCormick comes out on top.
