Stage 3
We’re halfway through the race and following the two nominally flat stages, we come to the more challenging hills today, including our first Cat 1 climb of the race. Puncheurs now populate the favorites list, but two sprinters are of course still included: Demare and defending champion Lagane.
In addition to the GC, the mountain classification is also once again on the table today. 48 points can be won, while classification leader Vendrame’s tally stands at 32. And the Italian is not in today’s breakaway to defend his crown. In fact, no one with any previous points is.
The first sprint and the first 10 points then goes to Pibernik, who is the strongest puncheur on paper in this group. 8 through 2 points are won by Hagen, Borg, English and Juntunen, respectively.
The five riders that complete this pretty large breakaway are Evangelos, Magnussen, Murn, Rodriguez and Adriamihajanarivo.
We fast forward to the second mountain sprint (the intermediate sprint went to Hagen without contest), where the order is once again Pibernik - Hagen - Borg. As we’re about to enter the final 50 kilometers of the day, the gap to the peloton stands at only two minutes. We’ll have to see how far that takes them. Magnussen is within 20 seconds of the GC lead, so it’s not a surprise they’re being kept on a short leash.
Third KoM sprint, the same Top 3, but this time Hagen wins it. He and Pibernik are at 18 and 20 points respectively. For either of them, a win at the Cat 1 climb would mean the polkadot jersey.
Heading towards the final two climbs, Indosat for Bagioli and Tryg for Demare have emerged as the primary workforces in the peloton, but riders from Everesting and Podium Ambition are chipping in as well. We can also see many of the favorites already positioning themselves close to the front.
With the peloton coming closer and closer, Pibernik wants to keep his bid for the mountain classification alive and attacks with 4 kilometers left on the Alto de Izua. Hagen is of course right in his wheel.
But after a couple of kilometers, none of his former companions can keep up with Pibernik anymore. Now he just has to hold off the peloton.
And he does! He even extends his lead over the peloton to more than a minute again. Given that, it’s not a big surprise that the peloton stays almost entirely intact as it crosses the summit.
But Pibernik is done for the day in the early slopes of the Alto de Aiastia, when the first attacks come from the peloton. It’s not from the big names though, at least not yet: Cepeda Hernandez and Meurisse try to get in front of things.
That attack doesn’t stick, and then it’s Stannard’s turn! He brings Hirschi with him. Behind them, Benoot and Kinoshita come to the front.
Stannard pushes for a while, but he ultimately can’t fully break away. Nearing the final kilometer of the climb, the peloton is stretched more thinly, but still mostly intact. We can even see yellow jersey Wouters still well-positioned.
ISA – Hexacta is not done yet, Van Niekerk is the next attacker.
He wins the mountain sprint, but doesn’t really get much separation, either. Demare and Lagane are close to the front heading into the downhill, but so is Wouters still, and a few other sprinters.
On the downhill, Van Niekerk goes again! Hirschi and Meurisse follow and they manage to open a little gap. Five flat kilometers remain.
Kalaba and Demare, who once again seems overeager without any teammates around, are the two guys most invested into bringing the trio back – not the greatest strategy, probably. Lagane is looking calm, Oliveira is also bringing himself into position. Both could take the GC lead with a stage win today.
With 2 kilometers to go, the peloton makes contact with the attackers again, but Kalaba looks spent. Hirschi just attacks again from the front now.
Maybe I underestimated Kalaba? He’s the only one quick enough, both mentally and physically, to follow this renewed acceleration by the trio. Then there’s a gap to Bagioli, Demare and Oliveira!
But no, Kalaba indeed can’t keep up – what a rollercoaster. Meurisse is now in great position, emerging from behind Hirschi. Demare meanwhile tries to close down on the leaders. If there are no time gaps, any bonus second – as long as he remains ahead of Wouters – will deliver him yellow again.
But that’s not going to happen! Just like Kalaba, the Frenchman craters and is overtaken by many, including indeed Wouters, who’s putting in a terrific defense of his jersey. With Van Niekerk struggling, it looks like the stage win is a two horse race, currently in favor of Meurisse.
Wouters is now even moving into third place on the road, Stannard making headway in his slipstream.
But the stage win goes to Meurisse! Terrific effort, a tactical masterclass! Hirschi scores a nice second-place finish, too.
Wouters finishes third, no doubt the yellow jersey gave him wings today. If he can do that again tomorrow, maybe he can actually win this race! Stannard and Kinoshita collect a few bonus seconds, too …
… as do Oliveira, Paez and Van Niekerk. The South African initiated the winning move and doesn’t quite get rewarded for it, a strong showing nonetheless.
Lagane finishes 10th behind Sagan, ultimately not where he wanted to be, I’m sure. Still better than Demare, of course, who once again faltered without team support and ends up just 14th.
Demare still is second overall at the moment, now tied with Meurisse, 8 seconds behind Wouters, who now also comfortably leads the points classification. Much can still change tomorrow, with longer climbs than today, but his rivals will have to make things tougher on the Lotto-Caloi rider if they still want to dethrone him.
