Stage 2
Welcome back to the Basque Country. We’re looking at another stage that is classified as flat, but there’s plenty of elevation nonetheless. 40 mountain points are on offer from six sprints - Lecourt De Billot’s leading mark currently stands at 24.
As for the finale, Tryg will want to make sure that we once again have a bunch sprint so they can build on their excellent form and deliver Demare another stage win.
The first KoM sprint comes very early and while Lecourt De Billot did attempt to join the breakaway, he was a bit late and now 7 riders are ahead of him.
At the front of the race, Vendrame easily claims the first 6 points of the day. Ethiopian Airlines’ race went down the drain yesterday with both Vendrame and leader Bystrom losing time in the unexpected split, so this is their way to salvage it.
And the Italian could well sweep all sprints today, as he’s clearly the strongest puncheur in an otherwise modest group, which also includes De Pooter, Sinkeldam, Peden (all three at + 20’), Kench, Teutenberg and Batmunkh (+ 1’17 following the split). The latter is the main challenger to Vendrame for all flat-ish sprints, being a very solid sprinter.
Vendrame wins the only Cat 2 climb of the day, moving up to 16 points overall, already 3rd in the provisional KoM ranking. Teutenberg and Batmunkh follow, indicating that the climb wasn’t all that hard. The group has five minutes on the peloton at this point.
As expected, Vendrame wins sprint #3, this time ahead of Kench …
… but then he actually does get outsprinted by Batmunkh on the pretty flat Alto de Vitoria. Nonetheless, with those additional 4 points, he moves into the lead of the mountain classification. The gap to the peloton is already starting to come down and sits at around 3 minutes.
It’s another duel between those two at the first intermediate sprint, with the better end for the Mongolian. But perhaps more interesting is the third-place sprint from De Pooter: The young Belgian is eligible for the U25 classification, where those 2 bonus seconds could become quite valuable.
Meanwhile, under quite strenuous pace from Sauber and Tryg, the peloton is once again being split into pieces. Currently, three major groups of around 50-60 riders chase each other, with sprinters such as Nur Hasan and Dakteris, and many of the puncheurs who had already lost time yesterday, out of position. Still 40 kilometers to go, of course, so plenty of time to catch up, but also two more hills to climb.
Vendrame makes it four of five on the penultimate mountain sprint, while Batmunkh moves up to 4th in the provisional KoM classification. The peloton is already visible in the background and currently consists of around 90 riders – we’ll take stock of who is and isn’t there at the top of the final climb.
Whether the group will make it that far is yet unclear, but they keep their lead at 30 seconds as they pass through the final intermediate sprint, this time with Vendrame coming out on top.
The breakaway is indeed caught still on the slopes of the final climb – well, “climb” – and we see a peculiar picture at the front of the peloton: Indosat is leading the way with Venturini, but then it’s Nur Hasan in second position ahead of Gani. You would expect that to be the other way around, and you wouldn’t expect them to be in this position with still 11 kilometers to go. But we also have Ovsyannikov and Demare immediately behind them, so the sprinters seem to want to get to the front early today.
At the mountain sprint, Indosat have corrected their formation with Nur Hasan in third now, though I guess he wouldn’t have expected to score any mountain points in this race. 10 kilometers of downhill left now, and we have a complete peloton with only a handful of riders off the back.
But things can change so quickly! 6 kilometers to go and we have a split in the peloton! Just 34 riders are up ahead. This includes most major sprinters and many of the main puncheurs, but not all: Kelderman and Vakoc are in this second group, as are Turgis, Edmondson and McCarthy, who had already lost time yesterday. That’s not the case for Meurisse and Serrano, though, who are at risk of losing their GC ambitions here.
But they seem to be in luck. There are hardly any domestiques in that first group and with Indosat not contributing any longer, Ovsyannikov finds himself at the front with 4 kilometers to go already. Obviously, he’s not going to pace a lot in that position. We’ll see how Tryg handles this adversity, compared to yesterday’s smooth sailing.
You have to hand it to Ovsyannikov, he gives it his all and really starts out on a 3 km sprint. Afewerki, Kalaba and Contreras follow in Demare’s wheel, then most other relevant sprinters are bunched up behind them.
Demare doesn’t seem to have the patience he showed yesterday. With 1.4 kilometers to go, he already goes into the wind. It’s a very slight downhill here, but still, this surely can’t go well?
And indeed it won’t. Afewerki and Kalaba shoot past the yellow jersey into the final 700 meters. The Eritrean has a very good chance to take the overall lead here.
But he, too, can’t hold his pace for long enough and Kalaba and Contreras move into the lead. On the right hand side, Oliveira charges to the front at great speed.
It’s neck and neck between the two leaders, but just before they get to the line, Wouters comes from out of almost nowhere to challenge them …
… and he takes the stage win! Impeccable timing from the Belgian to take an unexpected win. In his slipstream, Nur Hasan cruises to second place – whatever that tactic from Indosat was, it worked out in the end. Contreras and Kalaba are left with third and fourth place after it looked like they were going to fight for the win for most of the final kilometer.
Afewerki ends up in fifth place just barely ahead of Oliveira. Walscheid, Losch, a once again disappointing Einhorn, and Lagane complete the Top 10. Demare finishes 11th, disadvantaged by the circumstances but doomed by losing his nerves.
That 5th place was not enough to take the overall lead for Afewerki, he sits in third now behind the two stage winners, but he does take the lead in the points classification. Looking at the GC, because Demare finished 11th today and Wouters finished 10th yesterday, it's actually the Lotto-Caloi rider who gets to wear yellow tomorrow. There’s very little chance that he can keep it then, but still, a great moment nonetheless.
The polkadot jersey is with Vendrame, as discussed, and since De Pooter couldn’t keep up in the finale, the white jersey now rests on the shoulders of, who else could it be, Bagioli.
