Stage 7 Report

Stage 7 sees the Tour peloton reach the mountains for the first time. Although, with the finishing climb peaking 18k before the finish it seems likely to end up in another small group sprint. That final climb is the Cat 2 Col De Richemond which is 11k at 3.8% but that understates its difficulty as the official end comes after about 1.7k of descending. It is immediately preceded by the Grand Colombier (HC, 18k at 6.9%). Earlier in the 194k stage the riders will tackle another Cat 2 and contest a sprint point

The organizers think it will be the GC guys battling this one out.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/GTM/TDF/S7/favs.jpg

18k gone, the first four riders to attack got a gap and once again the peloton is uninterested in a larger group so despite multiple attacks from many riders, including the KOM leader, the original 4 are still alone out front. There gap is currently 39 seconds, which is as large as it has been. The lucky four are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/yor.png Elissonde, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/eko.png Vauquelin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/grm.png Abrahamsen, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ziz.png De La Cruz Chapulin.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/GTM/TDF/S7/01.jpg

Eventually pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/aab.png Van Aert is allowed to escape on his own and the break of the day is 5 riders. Abrahamsen closest on GC at 3’55. Only Vauquelin (7) has KOM points. There aren’t enough points available today for any of these riders to catch the leader in that competition. With 162k to go their lead is 2’36.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/GTM/TDF/S7/02.jpg

The break take all the points at the sprint without contesting them. Cedevita (Rajovic), Rabobank (Van den Berg) and EA (Van der Lijke) are the teams on the front of the peloton along with Puma, they seem to be keeping the lead in check, it hasn’t gone over 3’30.

The break’s lead is 2’23 as they hit the first climb of the day, the Cat 2 Côte de Corlier, 10.7k at 4.3%.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/GTM/TDF/S7/03.jpg

The lead is up to 3’15 by the top where Van Aert out sprints Abrahamsen and De La Cruz Charpulin. Vauquelin gets 4 points, Elissonde, who attacked first, finishes last and takes 2 points. Next up the Grand Colombier

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/GTM/TDF/S7/04.jpg

Rabobank and EA are eager to start the climbing, they have the lead down to 1’30 just as the break turns on to the climb just ahead. The entire peloton is still together

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/GTM/TDF/S7/05.jpg

On the climb EA take over and set a steady pace, the lead sitting at 2’21 with 14k to climb. On the front are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/eav.png Firdaus, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/eav.png Ries, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/eav.png Alaphillippe and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/eav.png De Bod.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/GTM/TDF/S7/06.jpg

7k from the top Abrahamsen is the first rider to lost contact in the break. The peloton at 2’05 still led by EA, a handful of riders have been dropped from the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/GTM/TDF/S7/07.jpg

De La Cruz is dropped from the break a few meters later as Elissonde sets a harder pace

Just over 5k to climb and Elissonde is on his own out front. He has 1’56 on the peloton which still has 161 riders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/GTM/TDF/S7/08.jpg

Elissonde takes 20 points. His lead is 1’58 with the rest of the break caught. Firdaus is on the front of the peloton but some of the KOM hunters have just attacked.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/GTM/TDF/S7/09.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ldl.png Mansouri, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/xr0.png Van Zyl, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/p4e.png Gladysh take 2nd, 3rd and 4th just ahead of the peloton. That is going to be enough points to give Mansouri the KOM jersey, unless pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/yor.png Stedman can strike back on the final Cat 2.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/GTM/TDF/S7/10.jpg

The 140-rider peloton splits into two equal parts on the descent. Stedman is in the wrong half. Most of the sprinters who still held decent GC spots are further behind but the GC riders are all safe. Elissonde has reached the final climb with a lead of 1’24 with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/rab.png Vader leading the pack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/GTM/TDF/S7/11.jpg

5k to climb for Elissonde. His lead down to 42 seconds. It will help him that the last 1.7k are downhill. EA working again, we have to assume that pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/eav.png Kirsch is feeling really good today. The peloton is back to 126 but Stedman is one of the riders who didn’t make it.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/GTM/TDF/S7/12.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/yor.png Elissonde takes 10 more points at the “top”, he is almost caught but has set himself up for a run at the KOM going forward.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/GTM/TDF/S7/13.jpg

Domestiques take the rest of the points but that includes Vader who has got himself up to 32 points, tied with Elissonde for 3rd, almost entirely based on his work on the front. Mansouri has 55, Stedman 49.

7k to go, Elissonde is caught. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/p4e.png Padun launches an attack followed by a number of other GC riders. The is about 3k of descending and then a false flat to the finish, not sure if this is the best territory for an attack on a 127-rider group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/GTM/TDF/S7/14.jpg

Off the descent Padun, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/tti.png Sivakov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/evo.png Lecuisinier, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ced.png Pogacar, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/kng.png McNulty, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/cdb.png Carthy have a 38 second gap. Peloton a little unsure who should do the chasing – it is you Merhawi, it’s you!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/GTM/TDF/S7/15.jpg

2k to go Padun, Lecuisinier, Pogacar and Sivakov have 8 seconds on McNulty, 19 on Carthy and 42 on the peloton where Haig has woken up.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/GTM/TDF/S7/16.jpg

Approaching the 1k banner the front four briefly hesitate allowing McNulty and Carthy to join but the peloton is still 32 seconds back as Sivakov opens the sprint.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/GTM/TDF/S7/17.jpg

800 meters, Lecuisinier in front, could today be the day he takes Yellow? McNulty and Carthy slightly gapped again. A group of 13 has broken off the front of the chase with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ldl.png Faglum Karlsson the most notable victim.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/GTM/TDF/S7/18.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/evo.png Lecuisinier pulling away from the rest of them, this might be the first stage he has ever won after a kilometer long flat sprint. The cameras had missed that pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/rab.png Grosu was still in the main group, he has now opened up his sprint which might impact how the gaps are recorded.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/GTM/TDF/S7/19.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/evo.png Lecuisinier wins stage 7 in unusual fashion, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/tti.png Sivakov will take 2nd, he started the day 8 seconds ahead on the GC so we will have a tie for the GC lead unless a time gap is awarded.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/GTM/TDF/S7/20.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ced.png Pogacar outsprints pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/p4e.png Padun for third. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/kng.png McNulty edges pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/cdb.png Carthy for 5th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/GTM/TDF/S7/21.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/rab.png Grosu takes 7th ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mos.png Neuman. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/pum.png Madouas, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/eav.png Kirsch, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mos.png Kudus finish 9th to 11th. Not sure 10th place was the reward EA were looking for, for all that work.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/GTM/TDF/S7/22.jpg

The only gap awarded up front is 24 seconds between Padun and McNulty. The next one is after 70th place. Sivakov and Lecuisinier on s.t. but the defending champion gets Yellow. Tomorrow he will be the 5th different wearer in 8 stages, he will be hoping that he is the 5th different wearer after 21 stages as well. Tomorrow is a real mountain stage so he will have a chance to make a big payment on that goal.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mos.png Kudus in 11th, 56 seconds down, he will need to be much more alert if he is going to have the kind of race his team needs.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/tti.png Banaszek still in Green although Grosu closes in a little. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/eav.png Firdaus still leads White, he expands his lead to 1’43.

King Power fail to put 3 riders in the top 70 and drop down the team’s standings, Jura now lead ahead of Popo4ever.
