Riga - Jurmala GP
kandesbunzler26
Report by Imladrik

Welcome to Latvia for a flat classic, 190 km from the capital Riga to its suburb, Jurmala. Indeed, the arrival city is close to Riga, on the coast, and a good place to take a bath after a hard day of riding.
Speaking of riding, the bookmakers favor a flat beast, with the Kragh Andersens as the favorites. But one can never rule out the best sprinters of the world that are Coquard, Grosu or Groenewegen. In any case, that should be an exciting race!

The baroudeurs must have felt a chance today, as they were 12 to try their luck in the break: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mck.png Julajuj, Rota, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mos.png Kukrle, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/spr.png Garofoli, Maccagli, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/tir.png Kabas, Bayer, Laurance, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/eko.png Askey, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/gzl.png Giulietti, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/lot.png Berckmoes and Fagundez.

Fun to see that San Marino is the best represented country in this break with 3 riders – while the best represented team is JEWA-Tirol.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Riga/20250304221027_1.jpg

Manada, Zalgiris, Popo4Ever, Cedevita, Polar, Aker, Kraftwerk and Rabobank are all the teams involved in setting the pace to control a gap that went up to five minutes.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Riga/20250304221242_1.jpg

With 15 km left, 4 riders survive in the break: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mck.png Rota, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/lot.png Fagundez, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/spr.png Maccagli and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/tir.png Laurance. The peloton with 178 men is some 35 seconds behind, with the early domestiques dropped.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Riga/20250304221914_1.jpg

It’s not clear whether pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/kmm.png Cherkasov is attacking the peloton or pulling hard, but Polar has been strong at the front the last kilometers.

They seem to (rightly) feel that the sprinters’ teams are lacking domestiques to do the work, so pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/p4e.png Varga and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/cdb.png Per attack!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Riga/20250304222127_1.jpg

It leads to an interesting situation with 8 km left: the 4 survivors of the original break have 12 seconds on a group of 8: the inevitable pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/bbc.png Quispe, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/fas.png Van der Hoorn, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/evo.png Kurianov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ced.png Katrasnik, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/p4e.png Varga, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/rab.png Van den Berg, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/spz.png Medvedev and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/akm.png Andersen. A set of star rouleurs which is worth a good amount of points in Scrabble!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Riga/20250304222255_1.jpg

20 seconds behind, Moser and MOL seems to be taking the lead in the peloton.

Only pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ced.png Katrasnik, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/akm.png Andersen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/bbc.png Quispe manage to join the break, with the latter unable to follow his companions pace.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Riga/20250304222505_1.jpg

With 2 km left, Andersen is now alone in the front. Katrasnik isn’t far behind, while Evonik is now setting the pace in the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Riga/20250304222545_1.jpg

Andersen still has 14 seconds under the flamme rouge. 30 seconds on the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Riga/20250304222651_1.jpg

He celebrates with 200 m left to ride, though the peloton comes fast behind. Katrasnik will be gobbled up.

Soren Kragh Andersen wins Riga-Jurmala!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Riga/20250304222824_1.jpg

Coquard leads the sprint behind.

And he wins it! Great result for the Frenchman, ahead of Vesely and Grosu.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Riga/20250304222903_1.jpg

Afewerki takes 5th, then come Enger and Hodeg.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Riga/20250304222949_1.jpg

Philipsen in 8th brings home the top 10 with Einhorn and Liu.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Riga/20250304223024_1.jpg

Another great win for Kragh Andersen. And in style!
