Riga - Jurmala GP (PTHC) - Preview
Yellow and welcome to Latvia for the seventh edition of the Riga - Jurmala GP. The race was won by Matti Manninen in 2021, when he was racing for Los Pollos Hermanos, which is just of course a random fact I didn't mind throwing into the preview. Very aleatory. Let's have a look at the profile.
And now we see Manninen won in 2021 (just reminding you to make sure), and the other editions have also won by similar riders. It's flat, and so far we have always gotten a sprint at the finish line. Except for dear Matti other winners were Ben Swift, Jacopo Guarnieri (2x) and Bryan Coquard (2x), who actually won the last two editions of the race. Matti Manninen won the year before for Los Pollos Hermanos, in case you didn't know.
Let's have a look at the top sprinters present in Latvia.
Nat. | Name | FL | ST | RS | SP | AC | | Coquard Bryan | 73 | 71 | 74 | 84 | 83 | | Grosu Eduard | 73 | 74 | 70 | 83 | 80 | | Groenewegen Dylan | 73 | 74 | 71 | 82 | 81 | | Vesely Daniel | 73 | 74 | 68 | 81 | 80 | | Philipsen Jasper | 74 | 74 | 70 | 81 | 80 | | Zabel Rick | 74 | 74 | 70 | 81 | 79 | | Enger Sondre Holst | 73 | 71 | 73 | 81 | 78 | | Kragh Andersen Asbjorn | 77 | 70 | 74 | 81 | 77 | | Liu Jiankun | 74 | 76 | 69 | 80 | 80 | | Einhorn Itamar | 74 | 71 | 71 | 80 | 78 | | Afewerki Elias | 73 | 77 | 70 | 79 | 80 | | Coutinho Lionel | 72 | 75 | 74 | 79 | 80 | | Lutsyshyn Roman | 70 | 69 | 73 | 79 | 80 | | Nur Hasan Sandy | 74 | 74 | 74 | 79 | 78 | | Boudat Thomas | 73 | 71 | 74 | 79 | 78 | | Hodeg Alvaro | 72 | 69 | 74 | 79 | 78 |
And the title contender is back to contend his title! Unlike the last two seasons this time not for ELCO - ABEA, but for Manada Coyote. His biggest rival seems to be Rabobank's Grosu, who wouldn't mind a confidence boost before heading onto the Tour de France, the second biggest race in the world only beaten by the infamous Vuelta a Tachira. Groenewegen definitely also one of the top-3 contenders here, in absence of 2021 winner for Los Pollos Hermanos, Matti Manninen.
Vesely goes for glory for Baltics team Zalgiris (with a special Z), whereas obviously Philipsen is also a sprinter aiming for a top-5 and more tomorrow. Other sprinters with 81 sprint but lower acceleration at the start are Zabel, Enger and Kragh Andersen. Being a Scandinavian 81 rated sprinter definitely means you can do something in this race, you can ask that to 2021 winner Matti Manninen, back when he was riding for Los Pollos Hermanos actually.
Then also some more 80 and 79 rated sprinters who go for a top-10, and on a good day even that top-5 or, why not, absolute glory? Four of them even with 80 acceleration, which, coincidentally, is also the same acceleration stat of 2021 Los Pollos Hermanos winner Matti Manninen. He won the Riga - Jurmala GP back then, fun fact.
You ask me, Nemo, do rouleurs have no chance at all then? I say you, yes, they still might have a chance, at leasy a tiny one, so let's look at the strongest rouleurs.
Nat. | Name | FL | ST | RS | SP | AC | | Andersen Soren Kragh | 81 | 77 | 78 | 76 | 74 | | Quispe Alain | 81 | 63 | 61 | 67 | 74 | | Katrasnik Gasper | 81 | 72 | 76 | 63 | 72 | | Manamalage Nipuna Shira | 81 | 71 | 64 | 57 | 56 | | Cherkasov Nicolay | 80 | 72 | 74 | 70 | 75 | | Veyhe Torkil | 80 | 66 | 71 | 56 | 78 | | Kurianov Stepan | 79 | 76 | 74 | 75 | 70 | | Per David | 79 | 74 | 75 | 74 | 74 | | Brockhoff Jan | 79 | 74 | 76 | 62 | 73 |
Quite some strong rouleurs at the startline actually. One name we have to mention is Kurianov, as he might be home team Evonik best shot at glory. Also interesting to note is Quispe finished 26th here in 2021, when he was a vital cog in the Los Pollos machine that lead Matti Manninen to victory.
Good luck to all, startlist in spoiler.

Only six riders here, and none that should really do much damage to the pack. Weave your magic PCM

The Manninen theme! Enjoyed the read, thank you, Nemo
Super hopeful for this one, as we tend to be for any flat race this year. And with a top 3 sprinter and the best rouleur, what could potentially go wrong in a flat race?
Seriously though, I really hope we get the positioning and launch right for Groenewegen, assuming it comes down to a sprint.
Looking forward to the race! |

We're here, too. If we get some points out of the race that's fine.
Also nice to have a complete overview of the previous winners (at least the notable one's), though a tabellaric view would have been nice.

My years of lobbying for the erasure of the race have failed as this was once again forced upon us by putting it into an otherwise nice pthc band. On paper, a very bad race, likely gonna get another 19th place via Kurianov. Thanks for the report, congrats Matti for the victory, see ya soon everyone.

More or less just Coutinho and the youngsters here, hoping that we hit the break and then Coutinho sprints to a top 10.
Thanks for the preview!

Thanks Nemo for another preview!
Again all hopes on Liu to score some points. Competition looks tough, so top-10 would be good I guess.

Looking for at least a top 10 here although it's clearly a small time race if Manninen has moved on to bigger and better things this season

Thanks to Imladrik for another nice report and congrats to ember for a great win by Kragh Andersen, no wonder he hadn't the legs anymore to also win in the Tour
Our team did all we hoped for with Askey in the break and another superb result by Hodeg. This season is really going well

Beautiful prediction, correctly calling my 19th place via Kurianov. Was actually a fairly fun runout wth the rouleur army uniting for a second. I can be fairly happy with Kurianov and Dversnes and a lot of low scoring depth behind. 7 guys in the top 51 is crazy depth even if its almost irrelevant for scoring
Congrats ember, love to see it

Thank you, knockout! We needed that after the Tour prologue
Amazing to see him win in such a style. Proving himself as the world class rouleur he is. Also great to see him allowed to play his chance even with Groenewegen in the race. For the latter, he seems to have been greatly out of position, but we don't really care. This is all about Kragh! |
