Stage 6 might be the GC deciding stage this year. Obviously the ITT tomorrow will play a role as well but time gaps today could be a lot bigger for some riders. That said, the top favourites are pretty similar in terms of climbing and TT, so any same time today could still be shaken a lot tomorrow.
The favourite list is basically just a order of climbing skills with some exceptions. Oomen vs. Rodrigues, then Johannessen, Cattaneo, Ranaweera and then many others. Even a small amount of daily differences could do enough damage for bigger gaps.
The climbing today is often in the red or even black slope levels, which means there is barely anything below 8 % and several parts between 10-14 %.
While the first HC climb is most difficult due to the length, the Cat.1 then is having the higher slopes and could do even more damage, in especially in the combination. And don`t ignore, you need to still save energy as it`s going up another time afterwards and despite this being the easiest climb, it`s late in the stage.
Team strength could play a role obviously as well with that amount of climbing.
12 riders want the stage win at least or maybe even a GC surprise.
Pronskiy, 20th +2'37
Mugisha
Mannion
Fraile
Evans, 37th +3'30
Tejada, 36th +3'30
Hellemose
Campero, 43rd +3'35
Battistella, 26th +2'49
Rodriguez
Gebremedhin, 19th +2'36
Bevin
We make a huge jump forward. In fact until early sections of the Cat.1 climb.
Not a lot has happened, but here a quick check:
The group was allowed around 2'40 and so exactly the amount of a virtual GC lead change. Not a lot seeing 12 riders working in group 1, which means also the peloton had several teams involved to counter this.
Break wise a group of 7 only made it to the HC top together, where Gebremedhin took the big points.
Evans, Tejada, Pronskiy, Battistella, Campero and Fraile the others.
Mannion, Bevin and Rodriguez were dropped a bit earlier, the others already caught by the favourites by then, which was led by former CT legend Pinot, a lot of Minions, ELCO and Lierse riders mainly.
GC wise most riders remained in the 38 rider GC peloton group.
Most notable missing are Ioannidis, 16th in GC and team mate Spanopoulos, 17th, though likely involved in some chasing I assume.
Mavrikakis, Niu and Agrotis all remain for the team in the GC group, which might become vital still in their team ranking fight as well.
Other teams being up there with multiple riders are Sauber with at least 4 riders around Misbah/Frankiny, Minions with 3-4 riders, Everesting with 3-4 riders, Ekoi with 3 and couple with 2.
Oomen and Johannessen and apparently also Ho Min or Iturria or Tenorio are pretty much isolated by a quick look.
Back to live cycling:
Being isolated in the group means, you can also attack I guess.
Johannessen doing so first with 14 km to go, which is 4 km ahead of the Cat.1 top.
Dangerous for Oomen and others as they are not right at the front.
Instead Minions with Dall'Oste, Everesting with Fortunato/Benito, ELCO with Niu or Bralirwa with Velasco moving to the front.
Then the GC riders starting with Tenorio and Oomen.
Johannessen quickly joined the remaining break but in the end Ekoi took care of the peloton as Pinot was sent to the front once again, who brought it all together.
2.2km to the top and we have a group of 40 including the GC riders, former break and some helpers.
Nothing happened on the way up anymore.
Some riders though used the downhill for a small advantage before going up the final 5km again.
First of Ranaweera, who is having a bit of gap over a five rider group containing Tenorio, Oomen, Rodrigues, Johannessen and Misbah.
Min and Campero next and not yet a real gap is opening though.
4km left and 33 riders together. The earlier mentioned small gap though still in the best positions where Rodrigues now accelerating again. Behind him Misbah, Ranaweera, Oomen and co.
A bit concering should be Minions and ELCO as their leaders are in the middle of the pack just like Kraftwerk`s Masnada.
2,7 km and a group of 4 prove to be strongest.
Oomen, Rodrigues, Johannessen and Ranaweera.
Basically Tenorio/Cattaneo missing from the top level climbers plus all the 2nd tier.
Exactly those riders missing though are leading the group 2 now additionally to Vasyliv.
Group 2 splits, surprisingly due to an acceleration by actually Vasyliv, who must have a huge day here.
Most surprising that 3 Minions are in this later group and this includes their leader Cattaneo. Just a bad day or more likely suffering after 2 hill days, where he went above his limit?
Group 2: Min, Misbah, Lasinis, Tenorio, Mavrikakis, Frankiny, Vasyliv, Masnada, Iturria
Group 3: Cattaneo, Vosekalns, Rachid, Berhane, Natarov, Pronskiy, Quintana, Budenieks, Niu
Group 4: Agrotis, Madrazo, Campero, Hibatullah, Pinot, Tejada, Evans, Andraifenoman..., Hadi, Benito
Stage and likely GC though is decided by the top4. Not far to go and we see both Johannessen and Oomen attacking. Can Rodrigues and Ranaweera follow?
Following yes, challenging no!
Johannessen takes the big win, Oomen comes over the line next. Then Ranaweera and Rodrigues. All same time though.
GC wise Oomen remains in the lead, which goes down to 24s though to todays stage winner. Then +36s for Rodrigues and +51 for Ranaweera.
Group 2 is losing 29s in the end. They are led in by Mavrikakis and Vasyliv Except for Iturria, who is losing another minute, the full group 2 at same time.
Group 3 around Cattaneo is losing 1'52 in the end making the Italian one of the biggest loser of the day, in especially as his TT advantage could have given him a decent shot tomorrow.
Masnada right now best of the rest in 5th GC followed by Mavikakis. Tenorio in 9th might have a good chance to improve due to his TT skills in especially as the 5th to 10th is within 15 s only.
KoM wise leader Velasco had other duties today and was doing well at times. His 34 points anyway were enough to remain in the lead with Oomen up to 2nd, equally to Campero, who collected most points today and Hecht and Laurance.
Team wise ELCO pays for their chasing today whereas Sauber moves into the lead by just 40s. Will be thrilling tomorrow still.
Everesting in 3rd already with a big more of a gap just like Ekoi and Minions next.
