Oldani is interestingly the man on the front behind but Polar have no real need to chase this break currently while Ries et al are only 1 min off 2nd Overall they are over 5 mins behind Bernal so Polar set a slow pace and the gap balloons to 4"47 after the first climb
And at the top we have our first Jersey decided of the tour Chiarello 2nd place on top of the 1st Category climb gives him a lead that is not possible to catch now a great effort by him. Novak takes the win on the climb.
At the top of the 2nd climb of the day Novak takes another win from Chiarello with Khodayari and Kiriakidis taking some additional points this time to add to their totals.
Again back in the peloton it's just Polar on the front and very little urgency the gap is now out to 7"17 though so Polar will have to make some inroads at some point
We see no riders go for the intermediate sprint surprisingly which is rolled over by Kiriakidis and onto the next climb we see our first rider dropped as Khodayari struggle with the pace.
He's not the only one as we also lose Kennaugh , Affonso and Sunderland up the 2nd last climb of the day.
As is becoming a reoccurring theme now Novak takes the points at the top of the climb and is now 2nd in the KOM rankings.
GC wise it's still good news for Ries et al as the gap is 6"27 and there's little pace behind bar Polar who have now been on the front all day.
20km to go and little change in the GC we are at 6"05 at the bottom of the final climb are we going to say a real change in the GC today?
Through the same point in the peloton we see that there was a plan after all from as they sat a fierce pace into the climb and the full 120 rider group is stretched across the Alps positioning is going to be key here as they hit the climb.
The gap tumbles in front under the Moser pace and Cort Nielsen senses the danger from behind and attacks hard. Novak follows this looking strong.
Ries jumps late behind and Arndt goes with him to form a 2nd group the remaining 4 are all riding strong still but together.
Kudus hasn't hidden that he will attack and goes as soon as the peloton catches the dropped breakaway riders. The devastation can be seen behind the pace has caused on this climb and there will be real gaps today.
Quintana is dropped following this attach though teammate Calmejane is still in the group.
Tenorio, Darbellay and Ardila are all all struggling at the back of the group as well. Ardila hangs onto the back but the other two would be dropped here. Along with 3rd overall Mas as the GC starts to see some real changes.
Calmejane is finally dropped along with Fouche the pace is now being set by Chaiyasombat as Kudus goes out to 45" seconds and the gap to the leaders drops to 2"15.
Up front Arndt joins the leaders after dropping Ries the leaders are now looking at the steep last 5km of the climb with a 40" gap to the still 5 strong behind now including Ries
Kudus joins those 5 behind now but Bernal won't give him any rope no matter his lead and is slowly closing that gap down.
Ardila is the latest rider to be dropped behind as he now rides with his U25 jersey on the line as Leknessund is riding away in the front group.
Which now closes down the break as Geoghegan Hart is dropped the group contains.
They are 50 seconds behind Novak, 1 min ahead of Ardila and a massive 3 mins ahead of Mas behind.
Novak goes for glory whatever his manager said to him after stage 4 it's like rocket fuel for this man he's quickly opened a gap on the steepest part of the climb
Leknessund has cracked on the slopes he's the latest GC rider gone ahead , Rodrigues and Choi now can't hang on to the pace being set by Meintjes who is even putting Kudus and Bernal under some pressure.
The GC group just isn't closing quick enough for the stage win though they see Novak slip around the corner as Kudus makes one last spurt.
Exhaustion and Elation for NOVAK! What a ride from the man who was down and out in this race two days ago he takes the queen stage is up to 13th on GC.
Cort Nielsen beats Arndt for 2nd both are into the top 7 overall now though with one stage remaining.
Meintjes is the strongest from the favourites group next from Bernal they stay 1st and 2nd overall and there is a small gap behind to Kudus whos attacking ride gains little in the end as him, McNulty
and Oomen are given the same time.
Stüssi is next home a strong ride to be 6th from the favourites group he's also into the top 10 overall.
Rodrigues and Choi disspoint behind but are still top 10 in GC.
A wall of breakaway riders next including Ries who rode himself to 15th on GC not what he wanted but still solid.
Leknessund is also in the middle losing 2"15 to the leader but taking the U25 jersey.
Ardila was a big loser today 3"47 down and down to 16th on GC.
Mas the biggest loser on the day 5"25 down and all the way down to 23rd overall but most importantly his GC leader Bernal has all but secured the win.
Novak takes the points jersey now while Chiarello has sealed the KOM.
