Welcome to Stage 2 of the Tour of Vancouver. We're not actually in Vancouver today, instead having headed east of the Rockies to the city of Lethbridge. With the dust having settled on the opening blows of the GC competition in yesterday's timetrial, there is now an opportunity for the sprinters as we trace a circuit along the banks of the Oldman River. We'll be joining the race in its latter parts, but before then, a quick update on this mornings events. The sprint teams refused to allow anybody else to make an escape but, with the maillot jaune in need of protection, most of the work was left to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/nfz.png Willhelm WALLINDER. The quartet that were allowed some elastic ended up being dominated by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ghn.png Lukas POSTLBERGER, who took the maximum mountain points (12) in addition to one of the intermediate sprints. The other was won by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/gla.png James ORAM. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/anz.png Jon Ander INSAUSTI and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/hrt.png Guillaume HALDIMANN were also present.

The cameras are clicking on with just over 10 kilometres remaining to run. It has been cold, wet and a tad miserable, but the air has remained thankfully still. That said, the bumpy parcours have taken their toll. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ghn.png POSTLBERGER and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/gla.png ORAM are still ~1'45" out on front, and with so little road remaining they may well make it. The situation isn't helped by the fact that none of the sprinters' teams seem overly eager to commit themselves to the front. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/nfz.png Matteo JORGENSON is mostly nonplussed; neither of the escapees will survive the coming mountains. To give a sense of just how little emphasis there is: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/eth.png Ryan GIBBONS is freewheeling at the front of the pack!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C2/Vancouver/S2/02.jpg

The escapees actually begin to extend their lead, until pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/nfz.png Newton is eventually forced to step in. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/nfz.png Alex MENGOULAS and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/nfz.png Tristan JUSSAUME come through in order to keep things from getting too out of hand, holding the time at ~2'00".

Coming over the short rise that constitutes the final obstacle prior to the finish, we finally see some action coming from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/twm.png Würth MODYF. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/twm.png Nicolas HEINRICH leads out pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/twm.png Harm VANHOUCKE and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/twm.png Willi WILLWOHL. The media preview did note the dire lack of depth in the sprinters' support staff, and now we're seeing the sprint favourite leaning on a sophomore flandrien and a climber. Well, at least pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ghn.png POSTLBERGER and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/gla.png ORAM will be happy about this.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C2/Vancouver/S2/04.jpg

Speaking of, that duo is now hitting the final sprint. For both, much of their pedigree comes from their capabilities on a timetrial bike - a skillset they have successfully up until this point in order to maintain an advantage over the hapless peloton. Now though, it is all about pure power, and neither can find an advantage. Unfortunately for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ghn.png POSTLBERGER, what goes up must come down, and he was hammering away at the various intermediate competitions. Maybe that was enough to tip the scales, or maybe pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/gla.png ORAM just wanted it more, but it the Austrian who cracks first, giving the Kiwi plenty of time to raise his arms in celebration of an excellent stage victory.

Although the win might've been snatched away from them, the sprinters still have an opportunity to secure a podium and 16 points. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/twm.png WILLWOHL's hodgepodge assembly doesn't do too terrible a job delivering him into the finale, but their lack of top-end pace renders him vulnerable to being jumped by those around him. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/zoi.png Lahcen SABER, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/sct.png Andrea BARBARI, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/hrt.png Alexander KRIEGER all exploit that opportunity; forming the remainder of the Top 5 with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/twm.png WILLWOHL finishing immediately behind.
