Stage 20
It’s the last mountain stage today and we will have one to three seperate races in one: the one for the stage, the one for the KoM jersey and the one for the GC win. Maybe it’ll all come down to the same riders or we will have mayhem for the director of the coverage. In any case everything is set for a really exciting stage!
The group of the day consists of 7 riders, most of them are rather familiar names already: Novak (12th in GC; 85 KoM points), Chaiyasombat (U25 leader; 60), Vingegaard (15th), Faglum Karlsson (11th; 45), Honore, Rohendi and Kirsch (17th; 38).
There is a maximum of 78 points on offer today, but with the still pending GC fight the goal for the KoM hunters will be to get to 121 points to keep away Morton in case of a stage win.
The break is in the first climb (Puerto de Navafria; cat. 1; 9.8 km at 5.7 %). With 5 km to climb their gap is 3’09.
The order at the KoM sprint is Faglum Karlsson (61) in front of Novak (97), Chaiyasombat (70), Vingegaard, Kirsch (44) and Honore. Rohendi didn’t compete in the sprint and is a bit behind.
It took the Indonesian quite some time to get back to the others, but he made it before they got into the second climb (Puerto de Canencia; cat. 2; 4.5 km at 6.4 %). The peloton trails by 5’33.
This time Novak (107) takes the maximum points (and the classification lead). Chaiyasombat (78) and Faglum Karlsson (67) in 2nd and 3rd are his only remaining competitors in the break. Rohendi was dropped again, this time already in the climb. He’ll probably won’t make it back again.
So it is. The 6 remaining leaders enter the third climb (Puerto de la Morcuera; cat. 1; 9.3 km at 7.0 %) with a gap of 2’53 to their former companion and another 4 minutes to the peloton.
Vingegaard takes the maximum points at the top. That’s a bit surprising as he has nothing to gain in the classification, but he’ll have some new friends after this move nonetheless. Novak (119) in 2nd and Chaiyasombat (86) in 4th will clearly be among them … Faglum Karlsson (77) gets 3rd place and can’t get our KoM anymore. The other two riders were dropped in the climb, but at least Kirsch could get back to the front in the descent.
The Luxembourger made it back just in time for the penultimate climb (Puerto de Cotos; cat. 1; 10.2 km at 5.8 %). The gap to the peloton is 6’09. Bernal could probably live very well with the break getting all the time bonuses at the finish (and earlier in the last valley as well).
This time Novak takes the maximum points, sealing his KoM win in style. Vingegaard and Faglum Karlsson are still with him. Chaiyasombat was only dropped in the KoM sprint and will probably make it back in the descent, but Kirsch is well behind. The peloton is still around 6 minutes behind.
The Thai came close to the leaders but just didn’t made it in the end. So three riders enter the final climb (Bola del Mundo; HC; 13.4 km at 7.9 %) with a 4’25 lead to the peloton.
Faglum Karlsson attacked his two companions with 9 km to go, but dropped only Vingegaard who is still in sight. The peloton is closing in further and reduced the gap by a minute. At this rate it won’t be enough to catch the leaders, though it will go a lot faster once Morton attacks – and he has to!
The first attack from the peloton came from Amezawa, Aular and Eenkhoorn with 8 km to go, but shortly afterwards Dombrowski is on the move and he forces Morton and Bernal to follow. The GC showdown is on!
In the end it all comes together, but the acceleration resulted in “all” also including the former break. With 4.5 km to go the time bonuses come into play again.
With 3.5 km to go Bernal is accelerating with only the top 9 of the GC (excluding Choi) on his wheel.
A km later Morton sets the pace and he dropped everyone except Bernal and Dombrowski. With the GC gaps being quite big already we’ll leave those others behind for the moment too and entirely focus on the maillot rojo fight.
With 1.5 km to go the three leaders are in a 12 % sector. Morton and Bernal still look good, but Dombrowski is clearly fighting. If the American gets dropped Morton will need a 15’’ gap to Bernal at the finish to secure the GC win.
It’s still the same picture under the red kite.
With 700 m to go the sprint is on – and it’s a sprint à deux as Dombrowski is out of it as expected. Will Morton get a gap though?
It doesn’t seem so with 400 m to go – it’s quite the contrary in fact! Morton sits down, but Bernal still looks good!
But the Colombian couldn’t take the lead before he has to sit down too! With 200 m to go both of them are side by side.
And so they finish too! Morton celebrates his 6th stage win, but he will miss the GC lead by 14’’. Bernal will win the Vuelta!
Dombrowski finishes 3rd in the stage, but just. Sivakov nearly got him in the end. This is also the order in the GC, though it would have been different if the Russian hadn’t lost this random 2 minutes early in the race …
Then it’s Galta and Choi in 5th and 6th. The latter came back strong in the later part of the climb. They will be 5th and 7th in the GC. Behind them in the stage are Aular, Amezawa and Wellens who are 8th, 9th and 6th in the final GC.
Stüssi completes the top 10 both today and in the GC.
Congratulations to Morton for another stage win!
Novak takes the KoM lead.
