Vuelta a Espana - Stage 20

Stage 20

It’s the last mountain stage today and we will have one to three seperate races in one: the one for the stage, the one for the KoM jersey and the one for the GC win. Maybe it’ll all come down to the same riders or we will have mayhem for the director of the coverage. In any case everything is set for a really exciting stage!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/PCM0294.jpg

The group of the day consists of 7 riders, most of them are rather familiar names already: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/akm.png Novak (12th in GC; 85 KoM points), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/kng.png Chaiyasombat (U25 leader; 60), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/grm.png Vingegaard (15th), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ldl.png Faglum Karlsson (11th; 45), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/trg.png Honore, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/jur.png Rohendi and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/eav.png Kirsch (17th; 38).
There is a maximum of 78 points on offer today, but with the still pending GC fight the goal for the KoM hunters will be to get to 121 points to keep away pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/yor.png Morton in case of a stage win.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/PCM0295.jpg

The break is in the first climb (Puerto de Navafria; cat. 1; 9.8 km at 5.7 %). With 5 km to climb their gap is 3’09.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/PCM0296.jpg

The order at the KoM sprint is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ldl.png Faglum Karlsson (61) in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/akm.png Novak (97), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/kng.png Chaiyasombat (70), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/grm.png Vingegaard, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/eav.png Kirsch (44) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/trg.png Honore. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/jur.png Rohendi didn’t compete in the sprint and is a bit behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/PCM0297.jpg

It took the Indonesian quite some time to get back to the others, but he made it before they got into the second climb (Puerto de Canencia; cat. 2; 4.5 km at 6.4 %). The peloton trails by 5’33.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/PCM0298.jpg

This time pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/akm.png Novak (107) takes the maximum points (and the classification lead). pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/kng.png Chaiyasombat (78) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ldl.png Faglum Karlsson (67) in 2nd and 3rd are his only remaining competitors in the break. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/jur.png Rohendi was dropped again, this time already in the climb. He’ll probably won’t make it back again.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/PCM0299.jpg

So it is. The 6 remaining leaders enter the third climb (Puerto de la Morcuera; cat. 1; 9.3 km at 7.0 %) with a gap of 2’53 to their former companion and another 4 minutes to the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/PCM0300.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/grm.png Vingegaard takes the maximum points at the top. That’s a bit surprising as he has nothing to gain in the classification, but he’ll have some new friends after this move nonetheless. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/akm.png Novak (119) in 2nd and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/kng.png Chaiyasombat (86) in 4th will clearly be among them … pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ldl.png Faglum Karlsson (77) gets 3rd place and can’t get our KoM anymore. The other two riders were dropped in the climb, but at least pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/eav.png Kirsch could get back to the front in the descent.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/PCM0301.jpg

The Luxembourger made it back just in time for the penultimate climb (Puerto de Cotos; cat. 1; 10.2 km at 5.8 %). The gap to the peloton is 6’09. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/pol.png Bernal could probably live very well with the break getting all the time bonuses at the finish (and earlier in the last valley as well).

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/PCM0302.jpg

This time pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/akm.png Novak takes the maximum points, sealing his KoM win in style. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/grm.png Vingegaard and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ldl.png Faglum Karlsson are still with him. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/kng.png Chaiyasombat was only dropped in the KoM sprint and will probably make it back in the descent, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/eav.png Kirsch is well behind. The peloton is still around 6 minutes behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/PCM0303.jpg

The Thai came close to the leaders but just didn’t made it in the end. So three riders enter the final climb (Bola del Mundo; HC; 13.4 km at 7.9 %) with a 4’25 lead to the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/PCM0304.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ldl.png Faglum Karlsson attacked his two companions with 9 km to go, but dropped only pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/grm.png Vingegaard who is still in sight. The peloton is closing in further and reduced the gap by a minute. At this rate it won’t be enough to catch the leaders, though it will go a lot faster once pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/yor.png Morton attacks – and he has to!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/PCM0305.jpg

The first attack from the peloton came from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mol.png Amezawa, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/oxf.png Aular and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/evo.png Eenkhoorn with 8 km to go, but shortly afterwards pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/gzl.png Dombrowski is on the move and he forces pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/yor.png Morton and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/pol.png Bernal to follow. The GC showdown is on!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/PCM0306.jpg

In the end it all comes together, but the acceleration resulted in “all” also including the former break. With 4.5 km to go the time bonuses come into play again.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/PCM0307.jpg

With 3.5 km to go pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/pol.png Bernal is accelerating with only the top 9 of the GC (excluding pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ziz.png Choi) on his wheel.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/PCM0308.jpg

A km later pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/yor.png Morton sets the pace and he dropped everyone except pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/pol.png Bernal and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/gzl.png Dombrowski. With the GC gaps being quite big already we’ll leave those others behind for the moment too and entirely focus on the maillot rojo fight.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/PCM0309.jpg

With 1.5 km to go the three leaders are in a 12 % sector. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/yor.png Morton and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/pol.png Bernal still look good, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/gzl.png Dombrowski is clearly fighting. If the American gets dropped pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/yor.png Morton will need a 15’’ gap to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/pol.png Bernal at the finish to secure the GC win.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/PCM0310.jpg

It’s still the same picture under the red kite.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/PCM0311.jpg

With 700 m to go the sprint is on – and it’s a sprint à deux as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/gzl.png Dombrowski is out of it as expected. Will pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/yor.png Morton get a gap though?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/PCM0312.jpg

It doesn’t seem so with 400 m to go – it’s quite the contrary in fact! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/yor.png Morton sits down, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/pol.png Bernal still looks good!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/PCM0313.jpg

But the Colombian couldn’t take the lead before he has to sit down too! With 200 m to go both of them are side by side.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/PCM0314.jpg

And so they finish too! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/yor.png Morton celebrates his 6th stage win, but he will miss the GC lead by 14’’. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/pol.png Bernal will win the Vuelta!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/PCM0315.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/gzl.png Dombrowski finishes 3rd in the stage, but just. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/tti.png Sivakov nearly got him in the end. This is also the order in the GC, though it would have been different if the Russian hadn’t lost this random 2 minutes early in the race …

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/PCM0316.jpg

Then it’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/cdb.png Galta and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ziz.png Choi in 5th and 6th. The latter came back strong in the later part of the climb. They will be 5th and 7th in the GC. Behind them in the stage are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/oxf.png Aular, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mol.png Amezawa and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/fas.png Wellens who are 8th, 9th and 6th in the final GC.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/PCM0317.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/jur.png Stüssi completes the top 10 both today and in the GC.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/PCM0318.jpg

Congratulations to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/yor.png Morton for another stage win!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/PCM0319.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/akm.png Novak takes the KoM lead.
