Vuelta a Colombia

Stage 5

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Colombia/S5/01.jpg

The favorites are no surprise with the mountain top finish. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/evo.png Lecuisinier is the big favorite!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Colombia/S5/02.jpg

The first 3rd cat climb starts immediately and the breakaway doesn’t really come together until the end. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/zal.png Januskevicius takes the max points ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mol.png Ardila and KOM leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ino.png Arifin. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/tir.png Fraile, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/lot.png Quintana, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/spz.png Battistella, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mos.png Otruba, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/rab.png Champoussin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ino.png Affonso, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/akm.png Johannessen, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/spr.png Natarov make it immediately. Tejada solos to try to catch them afterward, but fails. Of this group, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mol.png Ardila is the best climber alongside pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/lot.png Quintana. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/akm.png Johannessen also leads the white jersey (6:07 behind PHL) with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/rab.png Champoussin on same time and the best two on GC.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Colombia/S5/03.jpg

At the intermediate sprint, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/rab.png Champoussin leads the way through ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/spz.png Battistella and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/spr.png Natarov but there’s nothing to watch. The gap just a tad over 4:00 with 127km to go. We’re expecting the gap to never climb about 6:00 but for the breakaway to enjoy a fight amongst themselves for a while, if not to the finish.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Colombia/S5/04.jpg

The second climb is another 3rd category climb at 8km 5.7% but the group wants to work together afterwards still. At the top of the climb, everyone sprints, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ino.png Arifin is the winner here (and the only member of the breakaway who had points coming into today). pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mol.png Ardila 2nd ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mos.png Otruba. The gap is up to 6:20 now and 100km to go. The gap continues to widen up to even 7:20 with 95km to go.

It maxes out at 8:40 at 80km to go before heading down the long descent. Still, this shouldn’t be GC danger for the top riders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Colombia/S5/05.jpg

The final intermediate sprint is again just a roll through – pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/akm.png Johannessen first, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ino.png Arifin 2nd, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/rab.png Champoussin 3rd. 45km to go and 7:16 is the gap. Remember, the final climb is a steady 28km beast though where the pack will surely pick up time. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/evo.png Sureda is earning his salary today behind, as he’s lead solo for a long while up at the front of the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Colombia/S5/06.jpg

The penultimate climb is another 3rd category warmup really. No one takes it very hard in the breakaway knowing what is coming up, especially since the win is certainly a possibility. Of course, there is interest in the points, but that’s about it. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ino.png Arifin looked to be the winner, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mol.png Ardila FLEW by right after the line to take 2nd. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/tir.png Fraile 3rd! The organizers ask to look at the tape again… pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mol.png Ardila actually crosses the line first and flips positions with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ino.png Arifin.

28km to go now though and the gap is 6:33 and the final climb begins.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Colombia/S5/07.jpg

Look at Evonik – ELKO in line controlling the peloton. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/evo.png Sureda has been dropped, but all 6 other domestiques are in line for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/evo.png Lecuisinier right behind. 18km left and the peloton is down to 127. 5:41 is the gap while all members of the breakaway are still there.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Colombia/S5/08.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mck.png Yates decides it is time to attack with almost 15km left to the finish for him. Currently in 8th, that’s a bold move when there is so much firepower to chase you down with and on such shallow gradients. The attack goes nowhere.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Colombia/S5/09.jpg

In the breakaway, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/lot.png Quintana pushes strong and drops 3 -pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ino.png Affonso, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mos.png Otruba, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/tir.png Fraile. Still 10km to go and over 5:00 on the clock. Others still look very strong though and the Colombian may need to utilize others in order to have a true shot at the win.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Colombia/S5/10.jpg

Simultaneous attacks on both parts of the mountain! Just under the 10km flag, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/bbc.png Reis decides he needs to take the pace up and this makes a big difference as the true headliners line up. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/fas.png Phinney, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mck.png Yates, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/evo.png Lecuisinier, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/cdb.png Carthy, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/pol.png Latour, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/p4e.png Padun, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/gzl.png Dombrowski amongst others are all lined up. The peloton goes to 76 immediately and will continue to shatter because of this move, but the favorites will all be together.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Colombia/S5/11.jpg

Up ahead, two moves destroy the breakaway. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/lot.png Quintana attacks first and then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/rab.png Champoussin. This drops the breakaway to just pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/rab.png Champoussin and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mol.png Ardila although pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/akm.png Johannessen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/lot.png Quintana can still respond and outclimb on the final 7km with better pacing. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/rab.png Champoussin to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/bbc.png Reis is now just 4:52 – so the top 10 is still up for grabs for the breakaway.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Colombia/S5/12.jpg

5km to go and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/rab.png Champoussin attacks again after the 4 had come together. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/lot.png Quintana tries to react now, but it doesn’t close immediately. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/lot.png Quintana cracks and leaves the pacing to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/akm.png Johannessen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mol.png Ardila who drop him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Colombia/S5/13.jpg

Behind, the GC action commences! After a short-lived solo attempt by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/spz.png Barguil, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/evo.png Lecuisinier decides it is time to dance on the pedals. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/pol.png Latour is immediately on the wheel with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/cdb.png Carthy and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/p4e.png Padun also latched. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/gzl.png Dombrowski the final member of the top 5. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mck.png Yates, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/spz.png Barguil, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/fas.png Phinney, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/sfi.png Olivier, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/bbc.png Reis and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mck.png Kuss are also connected, but getting distanced. About 5km to go for the GC favorites. 3:41 is the time gap – so the race is surely to the breakaway but the GC standings will be more stable than anticipated.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Colombia/S5/14.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/pol.png Latour wants this to be his day! He attacks away and only pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/evo.png Lecuisinier can hold on. They have a major gap over pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/gzl.png Dombrowski, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/fas.png Phinney, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/p4e.png Padun, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/cdb.png Carthy, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mck.png Yates, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/sfi.png Olivier and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/spz.png Barguil. It’s almost 30 seconds and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/pol.png Latour looks like he’s flying!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Colombia/S5/15.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/rab.png Champoussin is pooped! And a winner! Rabobank takes back-to-back stages on very different terrain. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mol.png Ardila will be 2nd with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/akm.png Johannessen taking 3rd.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Colombia/S5/16.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/evo.png Lecuisinier does get away from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/pol.png Latour in the end, but the rest of the breakaway managed to finish. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/lot.png Quintana 4th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/spr.png Natarov 5th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/spz.png Battistella 6th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/zal.png Januskevicius 7th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ino.png Arifin 8th and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/evo.png Lecuisinier 9th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Colombia/S5/17.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/p4e.png Padun should be very happy to steal the daily top 10 spot ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/sfi.png Olivier and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/pol.png Latour. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/fas.png Phinney also nearby in 13th alongside pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/cdb.png Carthy. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/gzl.png Dombrowski finishes off the top 15.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Colombia/S5/18.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/rab.png Champoussin wins! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/evo.png Lecuisinier holds onto the GC heading into the final stage.
