Vuelta a Colombia

Stage 2

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Colombia/S2/01.jpg

The favorites here are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/evo.png Lecuisinier, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/gzl.png Dombrowski, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/fas.png Phinney, but that is no surprise for one of the toughest mountain stages of the year. A long descent to the finish is crucial.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Colombia/S2/02.jpg

Getting into the break will be a big deal today, just in case they allow it a significant gap. Eventually, it is the following riders finding their way into the break of the day: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ino.png Affonso, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/zal.png Tarvis, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ino.png Arifin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/tir.png Grossschartner, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/akm.png Lastra, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mol.png Van den Berg, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mcy.png Rivera, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/eko.png Chevrier, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/zal.png Kochetkov. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/zal.png Kochetkov of course the only one with previous mountain points, but amongst this groups looks unlikely to take any points today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Colombia/S2/03.jpg

It’s just the first and easiest climb of the day and the break is already fractured with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/zal.png Kochetkov well dropped and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ino.png Affonso off the pace. First across is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/tir.png Grossschartner with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mol.png Van den Berg 2nd. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/akm.png Lastra 3rd, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/eko.png Chevrier 4th and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ino.png Arifin 5th. The gap to the peloton after the first climb is 6:15. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ino.png Affonso is able to reconnect to the front, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/zal.png Kochetkov is done for the day and returning to the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Colombia/S2/04.jpg

The 1st category climb that drops pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ino.png Affonso after he put in a solid pace for the first half of the climb. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ino.png Arifin and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mol.png Van den Berg also fall off the pace with 3k to go while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/eko.png Chevrier and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mcy.png Rivera push the pace. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mcy.png Rivera drops the rest for the top points and immediately descends (the TV car misses the top but catches pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mcy.png Rivera alone on the long downhill. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/eko.png Chevrier 2nd, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ino.png Arifin 3rd, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/akm.png Lastra 4th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/tir.png Grossschartner 5th and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/zal.png Tarvis 6th appears to be the order. Still 118km to go, so the group will need to reassemble on the flat section to be of any use.

A few riders in the peloton are also dropped on this climb. No one crucial for GC as it is only 10 or so sprinters, but this could be a long day. The 7 top riders in the breakaway reassemble on the flat without pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ino.png Affonso. No surprise to see Evonik – ELKO leading the charge in the peloton. The long valley before the 3rd climb allows the breakaway to be reeled back in. The gap drops to 3:30 as no one wants to push the flat from the breakaway.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Colombia/S2/05.jpg

A long but simple climb for the breakaway distances pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mol.png Van den Berg midway through with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/zal.png Tarvis also losing contact. Neither was a suspected stage winner from this break. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/akm.png Lastra, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/eko.png Chevrier are the next two distanced leaving pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mcy.png Rivera and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ino.png Arifin at the front after pushing away from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/tir.png Grossschartner as well. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ino.png Arifin takes the points at the line ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mcy.png Rivera and the two hold a 90 second lead over pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/tir.png Grossschartner. The remaining riders line in succession of being dropped. The peloton is down to 102 and splits on the descent too before returning.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Colombia/S2/06.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ino.png Arifin and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mcy.png Rivera are the only breakaway riders to matter for the stage as the rest are slowly being gobbled by the peloton. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mcy.png Rivera takes the sprint point in a rather aggressive effort that likely wasn’t necessary. The gap to the front of the peloton is 4:00 with 63km to go and 2 major climbs. Once the road goes up, that time drops quickly.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Colombia/S2/07.jpg

At the top of the penultimate climb, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mcy.png Rivera tries to drop pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ino.png Arifin before the two ride across together – pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mcy.png Rivera in 1st. The rest of the points will go to the peloton which is still 98 strong. The remaining points all go to the Evonik – ELKO domestiques with 2:50 left to the 2 leaders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Colombia/S2/08.jpg

Our final climb is 10km at 8% before a long descent to the finish. This could be a small group finish, be left to the breakaway, or the climbers could try to demolish the field. At the base, the gap is just 2:22 and the Evonik-ELKO trains looks ready to push. 5km in the climb and the gap is still 1:50 with no signs of an attack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Colombia/S2/09.jpg

The group decides that today is not the day for a major fight. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mcy.png Rivera pushes enough to ensure he gets over in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ino.png Arifin and the two still hold 1:40 with 30km of downhill to the finish. The domestiques again take the remaining points with no attacks and a group of 85 still together at the top. It’s unclear who the best sprinter remaining might be – maybe pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/tir.png Arndt.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Colombia/S2/10.jpg

13km to go and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mcy.png Rivera decided that waiting for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ino.png Arifin was not an option. He holds 1:23 over the full peloton while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ino.png Arifin has 1:00. The road is still downhill and the pack struggles to make up any ground. It’ll flatten out with 5km to go but the slopes will still favor the breakaway.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Colombia/S2/11.jpg

5km to go! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mcy.png Rivera 28 seconds up on pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ino.png Arifin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ino.png Arifin 26 up on the peloton but now Evonik – ELKO decides to crank up the effort. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mcy.png Rivera will probably make the finish, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ino.png Arifin might be caught in a sprint.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Colombia/S2/12.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mcy.png Rivera is under the banner with a gap still! What a fantastic ride from the breakaway! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ino.png Arifin will need to fight off the remaining peloton though.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Colombia/S2/13.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mcy.png Rivera wins! No celebration as he sprints through the line – what a win for Manada Coyote and the Costa Rican!

2nd will go to the peloton though as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ino.png Arifin is caught in the final meters.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Colombia/S2/14.jpg

2nd goes to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/fas.png Phinney from the group sprint, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/pol.png Latour getting 3rd. Bonus seconds for them is a great addition to their GC hopes. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/evo.png Gavars 4th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/akm.png Novak 5th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/p4e.png Padun 6th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mol.png Dina 7th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/fas.png Bax 8th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/eko.png Vauquelin 9th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/gzl.png Dombrowski 10th finishes out the top 10.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Colombia/S2/15.jpg

Congratulations again go to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mcy.png Rivera who takes over the GC lead with the stage win. He also takes control of the points and the KOM jersey.
