Stage 18
Today is the penultimate mountain road stage and thus also the penultimate opportunity for the KoM hunters to gather some points. And the final climb is another chance for the GC riders to make a difference.
It took nearly the entire first climb until we had the break of the day. Now 10 riders are in front and most of them are familiar names: Faglum Karlsson (11th in GC; 26 KoM points), Schlegel (18th; 40), Chaiyasombat (U25 leader; 36), Novak (12th; 61), Quintana (20th; 34), Vingegaard (16th; 10), Kirsch (17th; 22), O'Connor, Fung and Martin.
Chaiyasombat (42) wins the first KoM sprint in front of Novak (65) and Schlegel (42). The peloton is 3 minutes behind.
We skip the next 60 km and are back for the second climb (Alto de Vilastreva; cat. 2; 13.7 km at 3.8 %). The gap is at 2’19 now.
Novak (75) takes the maximum points there as well as the provisional KoM lead. Behind him Chaiyasombat (50), Schlegel (48), Martin (4) and Faglum Karlsson (28) take the remaining points.
Novak (81) also wins the next KoM sprint, this time followed by Schlegel (52) and Chaiyasombat (52). The gap to the peloton has increased to 4’21 over those two climbs.
The gap is down to 3’37 when the 10 leaders enter the penultimate climb (Alto de Folgueiras de Aigas; cat. 1; 9.8 km at 6.7 %).
Faglum Karlsson (44) wins the KoM sprint. Kirsch (34), Chaiyasombat (62), Vingegaard (18), Martin (10) and Novak (85) are still with him. Quintana (36) and the others are a bit behind. The peloton is 3’32 behind the leaders.
Faglum Karlsson actually got a gap to the others over the top and kept it in the descent. He enters the final climb (Puerto de Ancares; HC; 14.4 km at 8.0 %) 20’’ ahead of his former companions (minus Fung who never made it back). The gap to the peloton is stable.
Some km into the climb the group of favourites has caught everyone but Faglum Karlsson who still is 53’’ ahead. Out of the top 15 only Blums is already dropped.
But the Swede is quickly caught and dropped once Sivakov accelerated. The Russian got a gap and is now the sole leader. Dombrowski is the first chaser, but he already looks pretty much spent. Morton, Amezawa, Bernal, Galta, Aular and Wellens are the remaining riders in contention.
But once Morton attacks only Bernal can follow him. The first chasers are Dombrowski, Sivakov and Galta. Then it’s Wellens, Amezawa, Aular, Choi, Faglum Karlsson and Stüssi, riding all by themselves.
Bernal attacks with 1.2 km to go! So does Sivakov a bit behind after Galta was dropped.
But with 400 m to go the two leaders are back side by side. Both look pretty much spent. Whoever wins the stage will also wear red in the MTT tomorrow.
And it’s Morton who celebrates once again! Bernal is with him though.
Sivakov in 3rd got a pretty substantial gap to Dombrowski in the end. Behind them the other GC riders come in one by one. The order is Galta in 5th, then Wellens, Amezawa, Aular, Choi and Stüssi.
Congratulations to Morton who not only wins his 5th stage and defends his KoM lead, but also takes over the GC lead by a mere second!
There’s also a change in the team classification where Tinkoff Team – La Datcha are the new leaders.
