Vuelta a Colombia

Stage 1

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Colombia/S1/startlist1.jpg

We’re back for the Vuelta a Colombia after administrative challenges delayed the start of the race. Still, the original startlist is here, even if they’re a few months out of order.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Colombia/S1/01.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/spz.png Malacarne is the first rider to get away in order to start the breakaway. But that is quickly brought back alongside a number of other attackers. The peloton has decided that 4 is too many for the break which ruins every attempt. Eventually pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ced.png Currie, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/taf.png Sterobo, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/zal.png Kochetkov are the three escapists heading up the 3rd category climb and only KOM points on offer.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Colombia/S1/02.jpg

At the top, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ced.png Currie takes the points ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/zal.png Kochetkov. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/taf.png Sterobo takes the last points and then immediately punctures. At the top, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/spz.png Medvedev also tries to get away and is chasing pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/taf.png Sterobo who is really struggling already. Finally, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/spz.png Medvedev is allowed to go and he passes pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/taf.png Sterobo to bridge to the front. At 130km to go, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/spz.png Medvedev junctures with the front 2 and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/taf.png Sterobo follows behind by just a few meters, but is never able to reconnect. The gap is 3:30 at this point after the break has conquered all the uphill sections.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Colombia/S1/03.jpg

The first intermediate sprint is here and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/taf.png Sterobo is cooked, but still between the groups after a long and hard chase. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/zal.png Kochetkov takes the top spot at the intermediate ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/spz.png Medvedeve and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ced.png Currie. The gap to the peloton is 5:20. As the break crosses here at 100km to go, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/taf.png Sterobo officially gives up and allows the peloton to start catching him. Behind in the peloton, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/taf.png Wandahl also punctures as a sign that today is not for Tafjord Kraft. He chases alone and may not return. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/eko.png Ranaweera is next to puncture but remains in the peloton. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/taf.png Wandahl returns. Clearly the organization could’ve worked on road conditions during the delay.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Colombia/S1/04.jpg

The second intermediate sprint comes with 60km to go and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/zal.png Kochetkov again shows they’re the best. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/spz.png Medvedev 2nd and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ced.png Currie 3rd again. 3:25 is the gap with 60km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Colombia/S1/05.jpg

The break is slowly returned to the peloton through the work of Benetton Bimex and Rabobank. With 20km to go, the gap is just 1:10 which should not be enough. Polar also begins to show up on behalf of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/pol.png Philipsen.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Colombia/S1/06.jpg

10km to go and the breakaway is holding strong! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/spz.png Medvedev pushes up front to keep a 30second lead for the break ahead of the sprint trains. The trains are going to need more domestiques though as just 2 Benetton and a Polar are in front of the main sprinters.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Colombia/S1/07.jpg

8km to go and the slight raise in the road makes the breakaway is toast. Rabobank and Benetton Bimex have set up their trains further back in the peloton so let’s see if they’re able to move up.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Colombia/S1/08.jpg

5k to go and the main trains area still way in the back with Rabobank and Benetton relatively organized but without a way to the front. Clearly at the front is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/pol.png Mas who has been solo leading out pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/pol.png Philipsen for at least 5km. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/akm.png Peak, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/evo.png Sureda, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mos.png Nommela and others are well positioned behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/pol.png Philipsen.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Colombia/S1/09.jpg

3k to go and we have two dueling trains now with Rabobank and Benetton Bimex finally able to come to the front. The rest of the sprinters pick the Rabobank train to follow.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Colombia/S1/10.jpg

1.8km to go and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/bbc.png Afewerki has been left to find the wheel of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/rab.png Van Poppel and the sprint is beginning. There’s a clear uphill drag, so we expect one of the sprinters from behind to come up strong. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/pol.png Philipsen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/kmm.png Walscheid are 3-4 of the best sprinters so far, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/tir.png Losch, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/evo.png Sureda and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mck.png Haller all nearby. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/spz.png Coutinho and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/spr.png Einhorn still here too with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/lot.png Wouters.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Colombia/S1/11.jpg

1km to go! The order stays the same really except pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/rab.png Van Poppel is now in the wind by themselves. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/cdb.png Forssell, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mos.png Nommela, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/p4e.png Lutsyshyn, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/eko.png Hodeg, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/akm.png Peak, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/sfi.png Alben are the only others sprinting of those not mentioned at 1.8km.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Colombia/S1/12.jpg

600m to go and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/rab.png Van Poppel is already dead as the road heads up to 3%. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/pol.png Philipsen is the clear lead with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/kmm.png Walscheid in 2nd. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/spr.png Einhorn also doing well alongside pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/bbc.png Afewerki but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/spz.png Coutinho might actually be the fastest on the right side.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Colombia/S1/13.jpg

400m to go and the order is shaken up again with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mos.png Nommela now out in front. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/cdb.png Forssell is also in the contest on the far side. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/spr.png Einhorn 2nd still though. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/akm.png Peak and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/sfi.png Alben on the far side as well hidden amongst the traffic.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Colombia/S1/14.jpg

Out of nowhere, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/p4e.png Lutsyshyn finally finds a way through on the left of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mos.png Nommela and takes the win! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/akm.png Peak 2nd, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/eko.png Hodeg a remarkably quiet 3rd place ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mos.png Nommela. The rest of the top 10 is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/spr.png Einhorn 5th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/cdb.png Forssell 6h, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/sfi.png Alben 7th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mck.png Haller 8th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/kmm.png Walscheid 9th and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/spz.png Coutinho 10th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Colombia/S1/15.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/p4e.png Lutsyshyn wins the stage and leads the GC/points classifications. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ced.png Currie leads the climbers.
