Stage 16
The riders have 5 cat. 1 climbs to tackle today. So it’s the perfect opportunity for any GC attacks and KoM hunting – and probably a long day fighting against the time limit for the weakest climbers.
It took long into the first climb (Alto de la Colladona; cat. 1; 6.9 km at 6.5 %) until we have a break of 23 riders:
Eenkhoorn (18th in GC), Foss (13th; 4 KoM points) and Plapp
Kirsch (17th) and Ries (6)
Roman (6) and Vingegaard (15th)
Min and Quintana (14th; 18)
Fung and Rubio
Zimmermann and Zwiehoff (10)
Dina
Faglum Karlsson (12th)
Kron
Novak (11th; 33)
O'Connor
Pomoshnikov
Power
Schelling
Schlegel (20th; 8)
Setiawa (20)
Novak (49) wins the first KoM sprint. The others points go to Schlegel (20), Pomoshnikov (10), Faglum Karlsson (8), Quintana (24), Dina (4) and Rubio (2).
At the foot of the second climb (Alto de Cordal; cat. 1; 13.4 km at 4.5 %) the gap is at 2’30.
Schlegel (36) wins the KoM sprint there against Novak (61) and Quintana (34). The remaining points are taken by Kirsch (8), Kron (6), Faglum Karlsson (12) and Schelling (2).
The group is still together in the third climb (Alto de la Cobertoria; cat. 1; 10.1 km at 8.6 %). The peloton trails by three and a half minutes.
The climb took its toll and reduced the first group to seven riders who also took all the KoM points: Eenkhoorn (16), Zimmermann (12), Rubio (12), Kirsch (16), Vingegaard (6), Faglum Karlsson (16) and Schlegel (38).
The peloton is 3’31 behind those 7, but it’s also down to 31 riders though no GC contender was dropped yet.
Novak and Quintana made it back in the long descent by the aid of Min who paid the price and couldn’t follow anymore. So 10 leaders enter the penultimate climb (Puerto de San Lorenzo; cat. 1; 10.2 km at 8.6 %) together. The peloton is 3 minutes behind and down to 22 riders.
But the two had to pay a price for their chase too and were dropped in the climb.
But the KoM sprint is won by Choi (19) after an attack from the group of favourites. The remnants of the break get the remaining points. The peloton is 1’52 behind at the top, but more importantly it’s down to 12 riders including some rather surprising names. Further behind (out of the top 15) are Foss, Novak, Amezawa, Stüssi and Quintana.
With 15 km to go 4 leaders are out in front with Choi, Faglum Karlsson, Eenkhoorn and Zimmermann. The group of favourites is only 40’’ behind.
Wellens attacked from the group and bridged across to Choi. They are 1’20 in front of the group with Eenkhoorn still in between. The group is down to 11 riders, Vingegaard is the next top 15 rider to be dropped.
Then Dombrowski attacks and drags Bernal, Morton, Galta, Aular and Sivakov with him. With 6 km to go the time gaps today will be big for those already dropped.
The two leaders were up to 2 minutes in front, but when Morton attacked the gap evaporated immediately. He already got to the front. The first chasers are Bernal, Dombrowski, Sivakov and Galta.
Under the kite Morton leads by 9’’ in front of Bernal, Dombrowski and Sivakov. Everyone else was dropped.
It’s the same order at the finish line. The gap is just small enough for Bernal to stay in the lead. Galta follows half a minute later.
Choi and Wellens are another 2 minutes behind in 6th and 7th. Aular follows in 8th. Burke and Blums complete the top 10.
At the other end of the race the first U25 leader of the race Holm Jorgensen is also the first rider who drops out of the race by missing the time limit today.
Congratulations to Morton for his fourth stage win. He’s only 7’’ behind in the GC now and still leads the KoM classification.
