Int. Österreich Rundfahrt - Stage 4

Stage 4 Report

It’s hump day at the Int. Österreich Rundfahrt and fittingly the stage features a big mountain in the middle of the stage (the HC Grossglockner Hochtor). It’s a Dromedary camel not a Bactrian so there isn’t much other climbing, just a punchy finish and two mild cat 2s. The stage could suit the breakaway, or a punchy rider or be a GC contest. Last year Jaramillo won it as the break was given a lot of leeway. The stage is 150k long and features two sprint points.

The organizers aren’t brave enough to predict a breakaway winner so they go with the big GC guns as the favorites.

Not surprisingly a lot of interest in the break today. 14k gone and 12 riders have come together at the front with a lead of 1’08, a few other trying to join still but Newton seems to think 12 is enough. The escapees are:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ghn.png Hagen (4 KOM points)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ghn.png Bernard (best on GC at 4’49)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/sct.png Smit (6 KOM points)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/bbm.png Paulus
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/anz.png Gaze
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/hrt.png Foldager
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/taf.png Ludvigsson
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/taf.png Guldhammer
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/dvt.png Egger (17 KOM points)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/hrt.png Majoral
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/esk.png Lafay
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/gla.png Mannion

Egger definitely in with a shot to take the KOM lead as he needs 16 points to lead that competition. There are enough points out there for anyone to be a threat.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C2/IOR/S4/01.jpg

Newton gathered on the front as the peloton hits the first climb, the Cat 2 Iselberg (7.2k at 7.3%). The break is 3’52 ahead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C2/IOR/S4/02.jpg

Egger leads all the way up the climb but isn’t quite fast enough at the top as Lafay (10 pts) and Bernard (8) go by him. Egger on to 23. Smit 4th (4+6=10) Guldhammer 5th (2).

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C2/IOR/S4/03.jpg

The break’s lead maxes at just over 6’30 with 100k to go, before Newton begins to reduce it a little. The break doesn’t contest the first sprint point.

The break’s lead is 5’54 with 88k to go as they begin the Grossglockner Hochtor, 18k at an average of 7.7%. But that average is a little misleading as the climb includes a 1k descent about halfway up.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C2/IOR/S4/04.jpg

The break’s lead is 6’01 as they complete the descent and start the second half of the climb. A handful of riders dropped from the peloton including one Newton domestique (Viennet).

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C2/IOR/S4/05.jpg

2.5k to climb for the break, Gaze, Smit and Paulus dropped. Pack at 6’02, Newton have lost a 2nd man (Jussaume)

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C2/IOR/S4/06.jpg

Ludviggson and Foldager are dropped from the break a few meters later.

Lafay takes maximum points at the top, Egger gets 2nd, he has the virtual jersey, Lafay up to 3rd on 30 points, 2 behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/zoi.png Carapaz and 7 behind Egger. Guldhammer 3rd on the climb. Bernard showing weakness as he is gapped just before the top. Gap up to 7’16 over a 103-rider peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C2/IOR/S4/07.jpg

The final Cat 2 is a secondary peak right after the main climb. Lafay takes 10 more points, Egger fades to 4th on the climb and but that is enough to keep the jersey by 1 point (41-40). Bernard was able to rejoin the group and hold on over this climb. He is the virtual GC leader as the peloton is at 8’21 now, although the peloton are over the HC climb now and will no doubt accelerate the chase.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C2/IOR/S4/08.jpg

48k to go for the peloton, mostly flat now. Newton have some work to do as they couldn’t close on the descent and are now 8’21 down. Their pressing on the descent has caused some chaos with just 31 riders in the front group. Highest GC rider missing is 11th placed pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/bbm.png Petelin, he is just off the back, a larger group is further behind with Tafjord chasing as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/taf.png Garby (19th) is back there.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C2/IOR/S4/09.jpg

30k to go for the peloton. They have the lead down to 6’43. Most of the riders split off were able to rejoin bringing the peloton back to 67 but a group with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/sct.png Manfredi (25th), is further back and looks to be out of it. The break is focused on maximizing their advantage and ignored the 2nd sprint as well.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C2/IOR/S4/10.jpg

Just under the 20k banner, Newton seems to run out of steam and the chase breaks down. The leaders still have 5’38. With the pace off pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/bbm.png Raileanu attacks. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/snz.png Bennett and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/eth.png Penasa follow.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C2/IOR/S4/11.jpg

Almost simultaneously the cooperation breaks down up front as Lafay attacks.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C2/IOR/S4/12.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/nfz.png Madrazo closes down Bennett and Penasa and the other Newton riders come back to the front. Raileanu has 30 seconds, the break 5’27. Up front Lafay, Egger and Hagen have a small gap over the others.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C2/IOR/S4/13.jpg

5.5k to go, break still trading blows. Bernard is suffering, he did a lot of work to get into the break. But right now he still has the virtual GC. Next highest on GC is Lafay at 6’26. Newton is chasing again but they aren’t really making up ground – they are 6’08 down. The race does finish with a 2k climb at 7.1% so that could have some impact.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C2/IOR/S4/14.jpg

Soon after Newton’s ineffectiveness finally forces the hand of some other contending teams. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/eth.png Khederi has takes over the chase.

4.3k to go, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ghn.png Hagen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/hrt.png Majoral, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/dvt.png Egger and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/taf.png Guldhammer (6’30 on GC) launch an attack. The other 3 survivors in the break are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ghn.png Bernard (4’49), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/esk.png Lafay (6’26) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/gla.png Mannion

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C2/IOR/S4/15.jpg

The four attackers have 16 seconds on the other three as they start the final climb. Peloton at 6’12, Spark and Gjensidige also helping with the chase. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/bbm.png Raileanu has 1’16 on the peloton right now so he is moving up in GC as well.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C2/IOR/S4/16.jpg

1k banner, Majoral losing touch with the other 3, Lafay is almost up to him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C2/IOR/S4/17.jpg

600 meters, Lafay has run out of steam, Majoral and Bernard trying to bridge back to the leading trio but it looks like it will be between Hagen, Egger and Guldhammer. The latter leading right now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C2/IOR/S4/18.jpg

300 meters, Guldhammer has the edge. Bernard is 12 seconds behind these three with Majoral.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C2/IOR/S4/19.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/taf.png Guldhammer relives past glories with a win on a punchy finish after a tough stage. A great win for PCT outfit Tafjord, he will also move well up on GC. We’ll see how far, right now the peloton still about 6 minutes back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C2/IOR/S4/20.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ghn.png Hagen takes 2nd, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/dvt.png Egger 3rd. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ghn.png Bernard is 4th, no bonus seconds for him but the gap should be big enough regardless. A great day for Genii. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/hrt.png Majoral takes 5th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C2/IOR/S4/21.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/esk.png Lafay edges pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/gla.png Mannion for 6th. 2nd in the KOM and a big gain in GC for the Frenchman.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C2/IOR/S4/22.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/bbm.png Raileanu ambitious attack comes to nothing as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/gct.png Conti leads the peloton home and passes him right on the line. Raileanu does get 9th. 10th is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/snz.png Beltran.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C2/IOR/S4/23.jpg

The gap to the peloton is 6’10. A terrible miscalculation by Newton and the other GC teams. Bernard has 1’05 on Guldhammer in the GC, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/nfz.png Jorgenson back to 3rd on 1’09. He has work to do on the remaining stages, Bernard not great on the TT bike. Tomorrow’s hilly stage doesn’t look hard enough to shake him although he will be tired after his efforts today. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/zoi.png Carapaz holds 4th, Lafy up to 5th.

Jorgenson holds the points and young rider jersey. Egger up to third in the former. With two riders surviving in the break Genii takes over the team’s lead, 5’17 up on Babymetal.
