Stage 1 Report

The Int. Österreich Rundfahrt starts with a bang, 6 ascents of the Axams climb (3k at 9.6%) followed by a 21km monster up to Kühtai (average 6.5%) 165k in all. Cat 3 points are offered for the 3rd and 5th ascent of Axams. HC points are available on the final climb so that will dictate the KOM leader, but the KOM point is just before the stage finish so it may not be the stage winner.

The three big GC guns, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/nfz.png Jorgenson, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/snz.png Bennett, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/zoi.png Carapaz top the favorites list.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C2/IOR/S1/favs.jpg

Just about 6k into the stage and 1k from the first climb what was a break of 10 riders has split in half with Newton chasing behind. The front five are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/dvt.png Egger, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ghn.png Hagen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/snz.png Svab, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/esk.png Armirail, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/sct.png Smit. The back five are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/gla.png Ryan, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/anz.png Piganzoli, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/bbm.png Todome, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/anz.png Gaze, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/taf.png Kulppi. The latter group has just 18 seconds to the peloton, the front five have 51 seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C2/IOR/S1/01.jpg

No points this time up the climb, Egger is alone by the top with the back 5 caught by the peloton.

By the first sprint point at the bottom of the descent the front 5 are back together and Svab easily takes the points ahead of Smit and Armirail. There are also sprint points after the 3rd and 5th ascent. The front five from the original break seem to be the break of the day, they have 2’06 on the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C2/IOR/S1/02.jpg

The lead peaks at 3’44 but by the time the break completes the third ascent it is down to 2’56. Svab uses his punchy skills to win the KOM sprint ahead of Egger and Hagen.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C2/IOR/S1/03.jpg

Svab also wins the 2nd sprint point ahead of Hagen. With 97k to go the lead has stretched out to 4’18.

By the time the peloton completes the 4th ascent they have the lead down to 3’08. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/nfz.png Mengoulas and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/eus.png Sinkeldam on the front. Gjensidige have also been prominent near the front. Only pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/nfz.png Viennet, who did all the early work, has been dropped.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C2/IOR/S1/04.jpg

Egger attacks with 1k to go on the 5th ascent but can’t drop the others and Svab come round him to take first at the top. Egger gets 2nd, Hagen 3rd. Gap to the peloton is 2’26. About 30 riders were dropped earlier but they were able to rejoin.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C2/IOR/S1/05.jpg

Svab just edges Smit at the final sprint point, the lead over the peloton is 2’49 which is being led by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/nfz.png Ivanov. Another split has occurred, again with about 30 riders missing. Air New Zealand trying to close the gap. Glanbia have all missed the split and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/gla.png Main is even further back, he did a lot of work to close the last split.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C2/IOR/S1/06.jpg

As the peloton turns onto the 6th ascent to Axams the lead is down to 1’17. They will complete this climb and descent and then immediately hit the finishing climb. The Air New Zealand/Glanbia group has given up and is more than 3 minutes back. 87 riders left in the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C2/IOR/S1/07.jpg

By the top of the 6th ascent the gap is 58 seconds. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/gct.png Jacobsen setting the pace in the peloton

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C2/IOR/S1/08.jpg

As they turn on to the final climb it is still 1’05. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/nfz.png Madrazo is on the front. 21k to go, all uphill.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C2/IOR/S1/09.jpg

16k to go, the break is caught. Svab was the last hold out.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C2/IOR/S1/10.jpg

Just under 12k to go and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/dvt.png Smith makes the first attack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C2/IOR/S1/11.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/nfz.png Jorgenson shuts down Smith with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/snz.png Bennett, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/eus.png Munoz and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/esk.png Iturria all attentive.

Smith tries again under the 10k banner and gets a small gap. Jorgenson leads the chase. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/nfz.png Madrazo has been dropped.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C2/IOR/S1/12.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/eth.png Grmay is the one who shuts down Smith as Ethiopian Airlines are well represented at the front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C2/IOR/S1/13.jpg

The next attack comes from Munoz. Jorgenson, Smith and Bennet join him as well as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/eth.png Penasa and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/tlt.png Primozic. Iturria and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/zoi.png Carapaz on the front of the chase.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C2/IOR/S1/14.jpg

6.8k to go pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/snz.png Bennett attacks the 6 attackers. They have 30 seconds over a 30-rider chase where Carapaz was setting the pace, although he has just turned it over to Iturria.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C2/IOR/S1/15.jpg

Bennett is unable to get a gap but his forcing increases the gap to 58 seconds. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/sct.png Kozhatayev leading the chase.

5k for the leaders, Carapaz is chasing again and has the gap down to 48 seconds. Chase group is down to 19, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/sct.png Seboka, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/taf.png Guldhammer and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/snz.png Beltran among those dropped.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C2/IOR/S1/16.jpg

Bennett goes again and gets a gap. Penasa and Jorgenson next, the other three look to be in trouble. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/gct.png Arensman has come to the front of the main chase group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C2/IOR/S1/17.jpg

Bennett has a small gap. Smith and Munoz just about catch Jorgenson and Penasa as the combined efforts of Carapaz and Arensman almost has the chase group back up to the leaders. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/eth.png Chamorro, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/sct.png Manfredi and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/eth.png Berhane have been dropped.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C2/IOR/S1/18.jpg

As the catch is made, leaving just Bennett out front, Carapaz and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/gct.png Lunke immediately attack. Still 3.5k to climb.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C2/IOR/S1/19.jpg

The attack brings back Bennett and stretches out the lead group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C2/IOR/S1/20.jpg

Under 2.5k to go, Jorgenson puts in a dig and only Carapaz, Lunke and Bennett can stay with him. 20 seconds back to Smith and Penasa. 29 seconds to a 12-rider group with the rest of the GC contenders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C2/IOR/S1/21.jpg

Everyone looks pretty spent, the leaders almost up to the KOM point. They have 18 seconds over Smith and Penasa and 32 seconds over the other chasers. In that group are Arensman, Primozic, Kozhatayev, Munoz and his teammate, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/eus.png Ablenado, 3 from Babymetal, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/bbm.png Raileanu, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/bbm.png Verschaeve, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/bbm.png Petelin. Plus pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/taf.png Garby, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/esk.png Iturria, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/twm.png Vanhoucke, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ghn.png Ulysbayev.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C2/IOR/S1/22.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/zoi.png Carapaz just moves ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/nfz.png Jorgenson to take the KOM points. He will have that jersey tomorrow although he will be hoping to be wearing a different one.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C2/IOR/S1/23.jpg

600 meters, the sprint opens and Jorgenson and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/snz.png Bennett immediately go by Carapaz.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C2/IOR/S1/24.jpg

400 meters, Bennett has to sit down, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/gct.png Lunke looks like the biggest threat to Jorgenson.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C2/IOR/S1/25.jpg

Lunke can’t keep it up and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/nfz.png Jorgenson delivers on stage 1. He gets the time bonus and a 9 second gap.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C2/IOR/S1/26.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/gct.png Lunke takes 2nd, he rode smart and used his teammates well, that is a nice finish for him. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/snz.png Bennett settles for 3rd with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/zoi.png Carapaz 4th. All 3 are on the same time.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C2/IOR/S1/27.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/eth.png Penasa holds off pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/dvt.png Smith for 5th. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/bbm.png Verschaeve comes out of the chase group to take 7th ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/sct.png Kozhatayev, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/eus.png Munoz and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/twm.png Vanhoucke. All of these riders and everyone in the 12-rider chase group get the same time, 35 seconds down on Jorgenson.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C2/IOR/S1/28.jpg

Jorgenson also has the points and U25 jerseys. Babymetal are the best team.
