Stage 18
We have the penultimate mountain stage today – and probably a decisive one for the KoM competition.
It took until the first climb (La Crosetta; cat. 1; 13.4 km at 7.1%) for a break to be established, but now 16 riders are at the front:
Aranburu (17th in GC) and Eg
Carboni (13th in GC; 2 KoM points) and Leknessund (1st in U25; 15)
Crncevic and Prado (25)
Bellan
Carcueva (10)
Errazkin (19th in GC; 2)
Formolo (12th in GC; 25)
Fouche (23rd in GC; 35)
Girdlestone
O'Connor (2)
Parra Bustamente
Vingegaard (5)
Williams (26)
Formolo (now 41 points) wins the first KoM sprint. Behind him are Carboni (14), Williams (36), Prado (33), Fouche (41), Eg (4) and Carcueva (12). The peloton is 3 minutes behind.
Way further behind it will be a long day for Vlatos who is already 5 minutes behind the peloton. Wippert, Atkins and Scotson were dropped too and will also have to fight hard to stay in the time limit today with more than 170 km still to ride.
The break is in the second climb today (Passo Fedaia; cat. 1; 13.5 km at 7.7%). The gap to the peloton is now 8 minutes.
Formolo (57) arrives solo at the KoM sprint. But the likes of Carboni (26), Fouche (51), Girdlestone (8), Williams (42), Vingegaard (9) and Eg (6) will probably come back in the descent. Meanwhile the peloton trails by about 9’30, so the Italian is virtually wearing both pink and blue at the moment.
All those chasers mentioned (except Eg) made it back to the front and are already in the next climb (Passo Pordoi; cat. HC; 11.9 km at 6.7%). This is actually the first HC climb in the race and also the highest point of this year’s Giro, meaning the Cima Coppi will be awarded there.
The peloton is closing in again and is only 7 minutes behind now. More importantly, it is down to 24 riders, though none of the top 15 riders is dropped yet.
Formolo (77) takes the Cima Coppi as well and will wear the blue jersey tomorrow. Behind him Carboni (40), Williams (54), Vingegaard (19), Fouche (59) and Girdlestone (13) come over the top one by one. The peloton has reduced the gap further and is now 3’30 behind.
The first four riders came together in the descent once again and are now in the last climb of the day (Passo Giau; cat. 1; 10.1 km at 9.1%) which is followed by a long descent to the finish. They probably won’t make it there first though with the peloton only 2’15 behind now.
And the break is over when the GC leaders attack with 5 km to climb. Latour was the first attacker and is now in the lead. Formolo is still 2nd right now, but that won’t be long as he already looks cooked after a long day in the break. Carthy and Olivier are the first real chasers, but Wellens is leading the other favourites not far behind.
But then Herklotz accelerated and overtook all of those in front of him except Latour. Those two are 42’’ in front of a group of 5, consisting of Olivier, Wellens, Eastman, Carthy and Almeida. Stüssi, Choi, Geoghegan Hart, Foss and Hirt are another 40’’ behind. And it’s still 3.5 km to climb.
Latour wins the KoM in front of Herklotz (56), but more importantly they start the final descent of more than 17 km with a 49’’ advantage over Olivier, Wellens and Carthy (47). Eastman and Almeida are another 40’’ behind.
Latour will have to sprint from the front with 1.5 km to go. Olivier and Wellens are closing in after they have dropped Carthy in the descent.
But Herklotz shows no mercy and takes his next stage win!
Wellens wins the sprint for 3rd against Olivier. Then it’s Carthy with a gap, followed by Almeida and Eastman.
Geoghegan Hart wins the sprint for 8th against Foss, Stüssi and Choi. Those four lost more than 2 minutes today. Hirt loses another 40’’, but behind him the real big gaps begin with the next riders 3 minutes behind him.
On a side note Vlatos is the first rider to miss the time limit this year (by nearly 20 minutes …).
