It’s the last day of week 2 and it’s one for the climbers. Or will we finally see the first successful break of the Giro?

Today’s intermediate sprint is once again not contested, but it’s also on the foot of the first categorized climb of the day. The gap is at 3’41.

In the second climb (Passo della Consuma; cat. 2; 14.7 km at 6.2%) pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/akm.png Bravo and Laporte are the first riders to be dropped from the break. The others have still a gap of around 3 minutes to the peloton.

At the KoM sprint it’s a close fight between pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/xr0.png Fouche (16) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/yor.png Williams (12) with the better end for the Kiwi. Behind them pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/tti.png Rikunov (6), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/aab.png O'Connor (4) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/grm.png Vingegaard (2) take the remaining points.

In the next climb (Passo della Calla; cat. 2; 13.0 km at 6.2 %) pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ldl.png Mansouri is dropped as well. The peloton is slowly closing the gap and more importantly quickly dropping riders. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/yor.png Yates is the biggest name among those dropped.

There’s no cat. 1 climb on the route today, but the stage is too hard for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/gzl.png Lutsenko nonetheless! He’ll clearly lose his second place in the GC and maybe his lead in the points classification as well.

The break is over mid-climb after an otherwise fruitless attack from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/pol.png Latour. 15 km to go!

There were some more attacks from the usual suspects like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/pol.png Latour, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/cdb.png Carthy and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/sfi.png Olivier. The Dutchman actually gets a small gap at the top. As another effect of the attacks more riders were dropped from the peloton which is down to 15 riders.

It took a moment until pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ziz.png Conci took over chasing duties in the group of favourites, so as a result pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/sfi.png Olivier has a gap of 37’’ when beginning the final descent. He has 8 km to the finish line.
