It's (e)a Vesuvio party at the top of the GC after the TTT on Stage 3. Six riders from the same team on top of the GC is quite unprecendented. It remains to be seem where they all end up. Can someone step up and upset the bandwagon though?
Four get away in search of bonifications and a possible stage victory on today's stage.
Polanc
Havik
Ruiz
Kulindwa
Polanc wins the first KOM ahead of Havik and Ruiz.
The front two are the same at the next KOM. Kulindwa takes the final point.
Once again, Polanc comes out on top in the third KOM. Order is the same as the first KOM. All three riders are tied on 15 points in the standings.
The order repeats on the fourth KOM as well. This gives Polanc the lead in the KOM standings.
31 riders have been dropped from the peloton, none of note to the GC.
Lidl, Rabobank, Yorkshire, Xero, ISA and Tryg are all pacing in the peloton with 60 km to go. No sign of Vesuvio domestiques, although Wirtgen is sitting comfortably in seventh wheel.
Ruiz and Kulindwa are dropped with 49 km to go.
They are caught 10 km later.
Polanc wins the fifth KOM and thereby confirms the KOM win. Havik is 2nd. Basso takes a point from the pack.
Polanc also wins the final KOM to sweep it today. Great ride from him, and there's some more to go maybe. Van Zyl and Cullaigh take the remaining points.
There's a split in the peloton with 144 riders in the later group. The big surprise here is Phinney, who is once again on a weak day. Madouas is here as well. Others include the likes of Paret-Peintre, Kron, Teuns, Blums and Evenepoel.
Polanc wins the first intermediate sprint. Abdul Halil and Demare pick up minor points from the pack.
Polanc is caught with 24 km to go. Sepulveda, Evenepoel and Kron are in the chase group along with three others.
Hayter is the first to attack from the pack a kilometer later. Bettiol follows.
The Evenepoel group has made it back.
The attacking duo are caught with 17 km remaining.
Gladysh, Narvaez and Gesbert are the next riders to make a move. 16 km to go.
Areruya and Demare join up with the trio two kilometers later.
All of them are caught another kilometer later.
GC leader Wirtgen decides to put the cat among the pigeons and attacks with 5 km to go! Is that really the smartest move to make with this profile not the best suited to him?
Wirtgen wins the second intermediate sprint. Those bonuses will surely help his GC lead. Basso and Kanter take the points from the pack. 2.5 km to ride.
Wirtgen has a lead of 17 seconds with 1.5 km to go. The peloton has swelled to 98 riders.
The Yellow Jersey is caught with 900 meters to go by Demare and Gidich.
It's four way at the front with 600 meters remaining. From the far side, it's Areruya, Wirtgen, Demare and Gidich battling for the lead.
Things change slightly as Areruya and Gidich have just inched ahead with 300 meters left. Ewan is up into 5th place.
Wirtgen is coming back with a second wind. Just 100 meters to the line!
But it's not enough! Areruya takes the win. He definitely lived up his top favourite tage.
Wirtgen takes 2nd and confirms his back-to-back GC win! Gidich edges Demare for 3rd.
Ewan is 5th.
Buchmann takes 6th, ahead of Romo and De Bie.
Grosu and Enger are 9th and 10th, respectively.
Ackermann is 11th.
Evenepoel, Hayakawa and Aniolkowski take up positions 12th to 14th.
Kanter wins the sprint for 15th.
Today's winner - Joseph Areruya.
Arreruya's wins take shim up to 4th in the GC, with Wirtgen and Gidich consolidating their team's good TTT rides.
Speaking about those two, Wirtgen wins the race once again, with Gidich and Herregodts, two King Power riders making up the podium. As already mentioned Areruya is 4th with Buchmann in 5th.
Polanc's great ride today gives him the KOM jersey. Havik is 2nd, with overnight leader Ruiz ending up 3rd.
Ewan's 5th place today gets him the Points jersey, with Grosu moving into 2nd. Once again, the overnight leader in the classification, Cullaigh here, ends up 3rd.
Romo wins the U25s after his Top 10 today. Matsuda loses time to slip into 2nd. Evenepoel makes up some after a poor TTT to end up 3rd.
King Power ride on their excellent performance in the final two stages to take the Teams crown. Rabobank, despite such a poor TTT is 2nd. ISA - Hexacta are 3rd.
