[PTM] Giro d‘Italia -- Stage 2


Stage 1 saw pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/pum.png Herklotz already taking his first win and the maglia rosa. Stage 2 has another hilly finale, but this time the riders have 200 km to get their legs warm.

Today’s stage isn’t really attractive for a breakaway with a long flat start and not even a KoM sprint within the first 210 km. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ldl.png Hoang and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/akm.png Silva were the first to get away nonetheless, and be it just to get a certain pace into the race so the riders won’t have to ride in the rain for seven hours. There’s actually been some riders trying to also break away, but in the end only pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/xr0.png Bloem was allowed to bridge across. Those three riders have a gap of 2 minutes now.

There’s literally nothing happening for the next 130 km, the break doesn’t even contest the intermediate sprint. They slowly improved their gap – and we really mean slowly as the gap has now reached a new high with 3’47. It’s still more than 60 km until the leaders reach the final four hills.

With 25 km to go the break reaches the foot of the first climb, but the peloton has already closed down the gap to 28’’ so the three probably won’t even get to the KoM sprint.

The break doesn’t even make it to the top of the climb. But in the second climb the action starts when pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/cdb.png Aranburu attacks! The attack doesn’t lead anywhere though.

With 15 km to go the peloton gets to the sole KoM sprint today and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/akm.png Laporte takes the point there to get the classification lead. Behind him pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/eav.png Gunnlaugsson and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ldl.png Ponce take the remaining points.

In the penultimate climb it’s once again pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/cdb.png Aranburu who’s attacking! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/rab.png Formolo, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/pol.png Latour and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/xr0.png Hamza seem to be the only ones reacting for now. There’s also an intermediate sprint (and some bonus seconds) after the last descent.
