The Race
It’s the second monument of the season! The organizer’s favourites are the usual suspects.
Today’s break consists of Lauk, Kung, Räim, Nommela, Dversnes and Godon. The Estonians are quite keen on the cobbles breaks this season.
With 187 km to go the first three cobbled sectors are done. The break has a gap of 5’36 but it’s already declining.
Meanwhile Hofer is already dropped from the peloton. He’ll have a lot of time to admire the beauty of Flanders today.
About halfway through the race the break’s gap is down to 3’33.
With 80 km to go the decisive part of the race is on its way. The gap still has a gap of 2’38 and there have been no long range attacks so far, but it’s all about wear and tear at the moment.
The break is caught with 59 km to go. The peloton is down to 39 riders now.
Shortly afterwards we have the first long range attack: Ovsyannikov, Polanc, Vermeersch and Vermeersch already have a gap of 56’’.
With 40 km to go Polanc has dropped his companions and is now solo. 46’’ behind are Ovsyannikov and the older Vermeersch. The peloton trails by another 30’’. It’s back to 52 riders with Sulimov the biggest name not there.
5 km later Polanc’ gap is up to 1’48. The first chasing group is down to 21 riders with Kamyshev the next bigger name dropped.
With 26 km to go the gap is slowly decreasing, but Per has enough anyway and attacks in the Oude Kruisberg!
With 16 km to go Per has made it to the front. The two Slovenians enter the Oude Kwaremont with a gap of only 13’’ to Gerts and Pedersen though. Then it’s 8 seconds to Wisniowski and Tiller and another 9’’ to Anderberg and Van Hooydonck. The next bigger group follows another 16’’ behind with Senechal, Theuns, Siric, Altur, Ferreira, Teunissen and Spengler.
A group of 6 enters the final 13 flat km: Pedersen, Wisniowski, Per, Tiller, Gerts and Anderberg. They quickly gain a minute on the first chasers.
There have been no further attacks on the last cobbled sector. Will it come down to a sprint or will one rider still try something?
Wisniowski tries an attack but is quickly shut down by Pedersen and Per.
With 2 km to go and no further attacks it’s clear we’ll get a sprint of 6 for the win. Pedersen leads the group as the clear favourite if it comes down to the sprint abilities, but with more than 250 km raced that’s not all that counts.
The sprint is on! With 500 m to the line Pedersen leads with Wisniowski at his side. Per seems to be the only other rider still in contention.
And the Dane takes the win! Wisniowski and Per complete the podium indeed.
Gerts comes in 4th. Anderberg edges out Tiller for 5th.
Siric wins the “sprint” for 7th against Van Hooydonck, Senechal and Altur.
Teunissen leads the next group over the line for 11th. With him are Polanc after his great attack and Theuns. Ferreira and Spengler come in 14th and 15th a bit later.
It will be a while before the last riders reach the finish, but we’ll leave the broadcast for now.
Congratulations to Pedersen for finally taking the big win!
