The Race
The organizer’s favourites are nor surprise at all as in all of the cobbles races.
It took quite a while for the break to be established. Now we have 5 riders in front with Barthe, Nommela, Räim, Kung and Havik. Zegklis was also part of the break but was dropped in the first cobbled sector and trails by a minute now. The peloton is another 2’47 behind.
The Greek is back in the peloton 25 km later. The other 5 have a gap of 4 minutes.
With 75 km to go the first cobbled sectors and hills take their toll and there are the first short-lived splits in the peloton. They probably won’t last, but some riders will pay later for the efforts needed to come back now. The break still has 3’22.
With 60 km to go the two Estonians are dropped from the break.
5 km later the gap of the three remaining leaders is down to 1’12. The peloton is split once again though the gap isn’t big actually. Gaday is the biggest name not in the first peloton.
The break is over with 46 km to go. The peloton is down to 55 riders (including Gaday).
Shortly afterwards Per is the first favourite to attack. Gerts is on his wheel. The two have 20’’ to a heavily reduced peloton of 21 riders. Gaday and Kamyshev are the biggest names missing.
The attack is finally shut down, but new attacks follow. Now it’s Wisniowski on the attack with Siric on his wheel. The first chasers are Polanc, Altur, Tiller, Teunissen and Per. The third group consists of Pedersen, Spengler, Senechal, Gerts, Van Hooydonck, Anderberg, Theuns and Ferreira.
With 25 km to go the two leaders are still some seconds in front. But only Wisniowski is contributing while Siric just stays on his wheel. The first two chasing groups have merged to a group of 13.
After the two attackers were caught there were several attacks that lead nowhere. With 13 km to go Pedersen has a small gap to 12 chasers. Ferreira and Spengler were dropped.
The Dane is still in front after the last cobbled sector, his gap is 17’’ to a group of 10. Altur, Van Hooydonck and Tiller were the next riders to be dropped.
With 4 km to go Pedersens gap is slowly increasing. He now has 29’’ and the chasers seem to be hesitating.
But with 2 km to go Polanc attacked and the gap is down to 9’’.
And under the red kite Pedersen is caught while the sprint is launched. Per is in the lead now.
The Slovenian is still in front with 400 m to go, but Gerts, Senechal and Wisniowski are right by his side.
But in the end Per is the strongest and takes the win! Senechal finishes in 2nd.
Gerts wins the sprint for 3rd against Wisniowski. Then it’s Theuns, Teunissen, Siric and Anderberg in 5th to 8th.
Polanc and Pedersen complete the top 10.
Now the riders come to the finish one by one. Tiller, Altur, Van Hooydonck, Spengler and Ferreira are 11th to 15th.
Congratulations to Per for another much needed win!
