Praha - Karlovy Vary - Praha
Welcome to the third stage of Praha - Karlovy Vary – Praha. Today is the decisive GC stage, the longest TT on the mangame calendar. It is 60km, mostly flat but a few bumps along the way.
With the prologue dictating the GC all of the big guns are within easy distance of the lead. Among the 80+ TTers only Bernal is more than 10 seconds back, he is in 56th and 14 seconds down. Next lowest is Würtz at +0’09, in 31st. So coverage will focus on the top 31 riders.
Favorites include most of those 80+ TTers:
The best early time is put down by the first starter Konrad, he comes in at 1’14’36. It takes about 40 riders for anyone to even get within a minute, the first to do it is Vabo who goes 26 seconds slower.
A few riders later though Konrad’s time is beaten by a big margin by Balmer, he cuts the best time to 1’13’43. This marks the beginning of the more competent TTers and the time begins to turn over more often with Kennaugh (-0’28), Hessmann (-0’11), O'Brien (-0’30) and Heidemann (-0’20) taking over the hot seat in succession, and a number of other riders slotting into the top 10.
The next top time comes form Penko who goes 6 seconds better than Heidemann but he is quickly beaten by Turek who is the first rider below 1 hour 12 minutes at 1’11’53. One interesting note about Turek’s rider is he was 30 seconds down on Penko at the 2nd check, meaning he made up 42 seconds in the last 20k.
Turek still holds the lead after 100 riders have completed the course. The leaderboard with 76 riders left.
Riders continue to beat Turek at the 2nd check but fall short at the end before Van Niekerk knocks Turek off, he, like the Czech, puts in a moderate time through the 2nd check (15th) but kills the last segment. His time is 6 seconds better at the finish.
The top time beings to drop quickly again as Andersen finishes 8 seconds better than Van Niekerk and then Munton smashes the best time by 37 seconds to break the 1 hour 11-minute barrier.
The first of the big names on the course is next, that is Bernal.
He goes into the lead by 20 seconds. But right behind him is Geoghegan Hart who was 27 seconds better at the second time check.
But the Brit loses 1’10 in the last segment and finishes 43 seconds down on Bernal. Ocampo, Vlasov, and Eaton all suffer the same fate, well ahead of Bernal at the 2nd check they are well behind at the finish.
Bissegger becomes the first rider to come close to Bernal at the finish, his 43 second lead at the second check turns into just a 19 second deficit at the finish. He is second on the day, 1 second up on Munton in third.
Best young rider Vernon is next on the course. He loses 37 seconds on Bernal but is well ahead of the other top young riders ( Leknessund and Matsuda) so he will keep that jersey.
But then in a surprise the next rider Tanfield bests Bernal by 6 seconds to take over the lead. He wasn’t nearly as slow in the last segment losing just 5 seconds of an 11 second edge over the Colombian.
Hayter is the last man on the course before Würtz’s marks the arrival of the top competitors at the finish.
Hayter finished 5th, 31 seconds down on Tanfield who leads both the stage at the GC at this point.
Würtz can see Hayter just ahead as he closes in on the finish.
Würtz decimates the best time, he is 59 seconds faster than Tanfield, first man below 1 hour 10 minutes at 1’09’33.
Vlatos slots into 4th 1’21 down and Goldstein 8th (+1’32).
Rekita give JURA 4 in the top 11 by taking over 4th on 1’17 (Brunel, +1’43, in 10th the only JURA rider not previously mentioned).
Lammertink takes over 2nd, +0’53 to Würtz. Lammertink wasn’t even in the top 20 at the 2nd time check.
Mano is next, he was even further back at the 2nd time check. He holds the gap to Würtz, but that is only good enough for 4th on the day +1’04.
Some riders suffering in the rain now, Zakarin is in a similar position to Mano at the 2nd check but collapses in the last segment to end up down 2’51, only 50th, not good for a rider who started the day in 18th. Razumov suffers a similar fate, not a good day for Tinkoff.
Mullen is the next big name on the course. He pulled off a big upset in Tasmania but he was 1’17 behind Würtz at the 2nd time check so he needs something special here.
Oof, the weather seems to have turned decisively, just 23rd on the day for Mullen, +2’15. And he is Irish, he should like these conditions.
Wirtgen is next on the road. He seems to be handling it better, we was solid through 2 segments, just 17 seconds behind the World Champion.
He does better than Mullen but loses another 49 seconds in the last segment, +1’06 on the day, just 6th. EA won’t have expected him to have the 2nd best time on their team. He is only few seconds behind 4th so will be better in the GC based on his prologue time.
The times continue to suffer, Yatsevich is a little better than his teammates but only manages 14th, +1’43.
Sütterlin is next, he limits his losses and finishes 7th, +1’08.
Gonzalez Salas is the best of the late starters so far at +1’05, 5th, same time as Bernal and +0’01 to Wirtgen, but his better prologue will put ahead of those two on the GC. Lammertink still 2nd on the stage and 2nd on the GC behind Würtz.
Leung is more known as a prologue rider, but he is just 3 seconds down on Würtz at the 2nd check. He fades to +1’58, still a solid 22nd on the for him and his prologue time should net him some time on the GC.
Meanwhile Zmorka, the last big contender to start, has come through the 2nd check 11 seconds faster than Würtz while Ganna was 11 seconds slower.
Oliveira loses 1’32 (14th).
Ganna in sight of the 1k banner now.
5th place for him, +1’04. He will be a little better on GC.
Zmorka next, we will have a repeat GC winner (assuming nothing strange tomorrow), either the Ukranian who won in 2022 or the Dane who won in 2023.
And Zmorka takes over 2nd on the day, 30 seconds down. He fades on the last segment. Also not good enough to pass Würtz on the GC.
Andersen doesn’t like these longer efforts he loses 4’54 to close out the day.
The top three on the stage, Würtz, Zmorka and Lammertink are the top 3 on the GC. They all manage to avoid the bad weather period that seemed to undo a number of challengers. Zmorka has the points lead ahead of Ganna. Not quite the success of 2022 but still a good race for Oxxo-Frisby as they also lead the team’s competition ahead of EA and JURA. JURA also get the White Jersey.
