Stage 1 Report

Stage 1 of the Franceville Classique goes 204k both starting and ending in Franceville.

The organizers think the cobblers will take this stage with none of the sprinters featuring among the favorites.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Franceville/S1/favs.jpg

The first cobbled section is just 8k into the race and by the time the leaders reach it there are already 4 groups totaling 19 riders off the front. The front group is 4 strong and has 1’54 on the peloton, it includes pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/eko.png Mestric, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/lpu.png Verwilst, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/xr0.png Van Zyl, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/oxf.png Aguilar Mendez.

The peloton seems to be ok with a big break and with about 20k gone they all come together with a lead of 2’52. Carlsberg and Lierse are particularly well represented:

The first group of cobbled sections see 5 riders dropped from the break: Julajuj, Benedetti, Aguilar Mendez, Healy and Destribois. But starting at about the 175k to go mark there is a long section with no cobbles so they will hope to be able to rejoin.

150k to go, Tryg and Tinkoff most prominent on the front of the peloton with Grieg and Rabobank also well placed. Aguilar Mendez, Healy and Destribois were unable to rejoin the front group and are now just 1’08 up. The other 16 have 5’43.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Franceville/S1/03.jpg

At the second group of cobbles Benedetti and Julajuj are dropped again and this time they look unlikely to rejoin. The break’s lead is still about five and a half minutes with 123k to go. A handful of riders have been dropped from the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Franceville/S1/04.jpg

100k to go for the peloton. On the front are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/grm.png Abrahamsen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/trg.png Sleen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/rab.png Vader, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/tti.png Yatsevich. The 14 surviving breakaway riders are at 4’34.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Franceville/S1/05.jpg

On the next cobbled section Verwilst is dropped from the lead group, Lierse down to 2 riders in the break and the first large group is dropped from the peloton – 33 riders. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/oxf.png Ulloa the most notable name and Oxxo-Frisby are the ones trying to close it down.

With 68k to go and 2’40 to the break pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ubs.png Jacobs, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/akm.png Anderberg, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/spz.png Kasperkiewicz launch the first attack. Verwilst was able to rejoin the leaders but the Ulloa group is still just over 2 minutes off the back of the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Franceville/S1/06.jpg

After multiple attempts Anderberg and Jacobs pry open a small gap of about 10 seconds on the Grieg-led peloton. They hold that for about 10k before Kasperkiewicz, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/lpu.png Gamper and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/fas.png Van Hooydonck try to join them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Franceville/S1/07.jpg

48k to go now. The greater firepower allows the attackers to stretch their lead to 31 seconds although Gamper insists on riding a few seconds ahead of the other 4. Breakaway is 1’33 ahead of Gamper. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/grm.png De Gendt doing the chasing having taken over from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/grm.png Van Gestel. The Ulloa group is still chasing 2’16 down on the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Franceville/S1/08.jpg

Soon after this pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/tti.png Sulimov comes to the front to help with the chase and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/spr.png Garofoli is dropped from the break.

39k to go Sulimov catches the 4 attackers although Kasperkiewicz, Van Hooydonck and Anderberg immediately launch a counter. Gamper still has 18 seconds. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/spz.png Svestad-Bardseng is dropped from the break which is 1’20 ahead of Gamper.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Franceville/S1/09.jpg

With 33k to go De Gendt closes them all down, including Gamper, and it is just the 12 surviving breakaway riders left out front with Svestad-Bardseng in between. The gap is about 1’30.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Franceville/S1/10.jpg

Multiple attacks from Van Hooydonck and Gamper are shut down but with 25k to go, and the break at 1’02, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/grm.png Pedersen makes his first attempt. The Ulloa group was never able to rejoin and the peloton is down to 85 riders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Franceville/S1/11.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/rab.png Van den Berg brings back Pedersen splitting 23 riders off the front of the peloton. But with the Dane caught he relents and the split closes.

With 20k to go and the break about 45 seconds ahead JURA and Puma sniff the chance at a sprint for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/jur.png Bol and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/pum.png Steimle and send their riders to the front. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/pum.png Rutsch is on the front when pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/tti.png Senechal attacks with 18k to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Franceville/S1/12.jpg

A counter from Pedersen brings back Senechal and the Grieg rider gets a 14-second gap. But with just under 9k to ride he still trails the break by 28 seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Franceville/S1/13.jpg

Pedersen is brought back but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/rab.png Gerts attacks and bridges up to the breakaway to form a 13-rider front group with a 20 second edge and just 5.6k to ride. The peloton is down to 43 riders but the situation is fluid and so far no big names seem to be in trouble.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Franceville/S1/14.jpg

Under the 5k banner Geerts and the breakaway survivors are caught and Senechal tries another attack. Rutsch is leading the pursuit but he looks spent. With the riders from the break cluttering the road the chase might be hampered.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Franceville/S1/15.jpg

2.8k to go for Senechal, he has 8 seconds. Pedersen and Geerts leading the chase. Behind them are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/cdb.png Per, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mol.png Altur, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/gzl.png Teunissen, Steimle and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/trg.png Ovsyannikov.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Franceville/S1/16.jpg

With 900 meters to go Senechal is caught with Steimle taking the lead (ignore the bike in front of Steimle, it is a lapped rider.) Behind those two are Geerts, Ovsyannikov, Per, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/gzl.png Lander, Pedersen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/xr0.png Vermeersch. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ubs.png Van Asbroeck just out of the picture.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Franceville/S1/17.jpg

As they turn into the final stretch it looks like it will be between the sprinters. Steimle has a clear lead ahead of Ovsyannikov with Per next then Lander, Vermeersch and Van Asbroeck. The attackers, Senechal, Geerts and Pedersen are dropping back. The Tryg and Xero rider in the center of the picture are lapped. Bol’s manager will be frustrated as he got caught back in traffic and will be fighting for a top 10 at best.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Franceville/S1/18.jpg

Steimle has gone a little too early and with 200 meters he is being passed. From left to right it is Ovsyannikov, Lander, Per, Vermeersch and Van Asbroeck. Then there is clear road back to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/brc.png Stallaert who is catching Geerts and Senechal. Then the two lapped riders and the next 6 across the road are Pedersen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mol.png Altur, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/evo.png Silva, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/gzl.png Teunissen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/sfi.png Shiki Kuroeda and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/sfi.png Kooistra. Bol behind them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Franceville/S1/19.jpg

It is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/gzl.png Lander who has the most left and can celebrate. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/xr0.png Vermeersch is 2nd then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/cdb.png Per and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ubs.png Van Asbroeck. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/trg.png Ovsyannikov did a little too much too soon and fades to 5th, one better than pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/pum.png Steimle who takes 6th. With riders in the break Per was able to bide his time and he is the strongest at the finish among the big names. He will have 8 seconds on the other GC guys heading into tomorrow.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Franceville/S1/20.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/brc.png Stallaert takes 7th ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/evo.png Silva and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mol.png Altur. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/sfi.png Shiki Kuroeda just holds off pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/jur.png Bol for 10th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Franceville/S1/21.jpg

The first 72 riders get awarded the same time so no impact on the GC from time gaps. Lander will lead the GC and the points going into tomorrow while Vermeersch is the best young rider.
