What a stage to finish off here: two 1st category climbs to start, and then we finish with two Hors Category climbs in a real mountain feast.
Jorgenson has been perfect so far. Can anyone challenge him on the final stage? Who knows, but as you can see above on the profile, the break has already gone up the road.
just can't control the breaks on the rolling start and all hell has broken loose. We have finally calmed down with 23! riders in the break are you ready for the list?
Gaspar 27th 4"19
Ryuki 3rd KOM 52pts
Todome
Chamorro 21st 3"33
Ablenado
Garcia 31st 5"16
Armirail 25th 4"13
Benito
Main
Mannion 5th KOM 34pts
Oram 6th KOM 34pts
Scotson
Squire
Majoral
Canty
Jimenez
Mostov
Revard 7th 32 pts
Smit
Goossens
Carapaz 2nd KOM 56pts 8"31 down GC
La Lavandier
Just the 5 riders from Glanbia, Carapaz bringing a teammate along today and no Barcelo on the one day he probably needed to be in to secure KOM though he has done a lot of breakaway KM's already this week
The riders already have 1 min by the bottom of the first climb
By time we hit the top that has Balloned out to 2"30 already, Carapazis only 4th at sprint one Revard beats Canty and Chamorro (who is already 2nd on GC in the virtual standings)
Revard is up to 3rd in the KOM standings Carapaz now only needs one more sprint win to lead the rankings.
Over the top of the climb we are down to 17. Mostov
Smit
Oram
Majoral
Todome
are the riders dropped on the first climb. The break is still working really well together and hasn't let up the pace at all now 3"00 ahead La Lavandier is doing a hell of an effort to start the next Cat 1 climb as well and has pretty much lead through the whole climb a brave ride as a domestique today.
Behind and trouble is already brewing as we see what's left of the team. Madrazo and Quinn are the only two helpers that made it over the first climb for Jorgenson how long they will last who knows but they are steadily losing time to the break and the dangerous Chamorro (21st 3"33) is still there
Over the next climb and somehow Carapaz scores zero points as we see.
Ryuki
Canty
Revard
Mannion
in that orders Ryuki passes Carapaz though still not passed Barcelo and Revard
Mannion both close up into clear 4th and 5th in the KOM now
The break has now thinned to 12 riders as the following are dropped by the high pace set by La Lavandier.
Benito
Jimenez
Majoral
Scotson
La Lavandier. what a rider this man has done as we hit the first HC climb the gap is 5"10! He pulls off exhausted but one of the riders of the week as he has single-handedly put Carapaz in a great position for a stage win and though not by his on design given us a new GC leader on the road in Chamorro
Ryuki is unfortunately dropped from the break though he has pushed himself further up the KOM standings
have nobody left to chase as both Madrazo and Quinn are empty in the valley it looks bleak in the peloton. Are they giving the GC to the breakaway?
Lunke to the rescue it would seem as he puts Conti on the front the gap is 5"00 and the stage has probably gone already but its damage limitation now.
But some big news in the break Chamorro has been dropped in the KOM sprint he has nothing left and won't make it back on a big disappointment as worse climbers are still in the group ahead.
Carapaz powered up the climb though and takes the KOM lead and more then likely the Jersey overall winning the climb from Garcia Main and Mannion are both looking strong as does Ablenado as Carapaz suddenly looks outnumbered we lose Canty in the sprint we the group is whittled down to 6 Revard holds on just but had cracked on the top on looks to have nothing left.
The gap is down to just 3"30 on the top of the climb and Jorgenson is back in the Lead. Conti does great work but Gjensidge now need to attack Jorgenson for this to payoff as the break will almost surely contest the win.
And as they hit the final climb and 6km to go that is pretty much assured they are 3 mins clear and Carapaz continues to sit on the front and rip a hard tempo out he has not taking more then one turn since the top of the last climb a real show of strength from the climber.
Behind Kozhatayev and Primozic attack , Jorgenson comes to the front and isn't playing games today he's just going to ride his own tempo to the top now the GC is in sight and he has time to play with.
Big news out the back of the group as 9 riders go clear. Smith and Munoz have been dropped and are clinging on to a 20 second gap to of the more active riders of the week are paying the price now.
We approach the final KM now. It's still the 6 riders with Carapaz somehow still on the front.
Ablenado
Garcia
Mannion
Main
Revard
Carapaz
One will take a stage win, Carapaz has now sealed the KOM with a top 6 in the stage.
Up ahead the rest of the top 10 on GC plus Rochas stick with Jorgenson he has the leaders down to 2"10 and no one wants to attack off this pace with 2km to go the GC looks settled without a big blow up from him now but how much time can they put into Smith and Munoz
Carapaz goes and blows up Main and Revard instantly but great riders by the two of those.
Ablenado chases this attack down but bites the dust just after the KM to go he seemed to be working for teammate Garcia who with Mannion are still with Carapaz as he launches his sprint!
But we have a shocker! we turn right to a big ramp and Garcia blasts past Carapaz who has no more left to give what a shock after his work today he has overextended himself! Mannion also cracks and it leave one man!
Garcia wins! What a week for Euskadi they take both wins in the mountains in a freak performance from Garcia a man not even at his peak beats the CT best climber a true shock performance.
Carapaz
Mannion
Ablenado
Main
Revard
finish in the following order all rode extremely well and have gained some points for their team on the stage great rides all round.
Jorgenson leads the bunch in theirs no shocks here today the main favourites all roll in together only 1"35 down in the end have they went quick up the climb Penasa, Iturria and Primozic will be the happiest as they all move up one spot overall.
Smith and Munoz fight their hardest and really close the gap at the end down to down to just 18 seconds great for Munoz who holds 7th but Smith drops 3 spots on the day a shame for him but he's been strong throughout this week.
Behind we see all the other riders in the top 20 finish within the 40 seconds of the favourites group as no one moves to much on the GC today.
To finish
Jorgenson takes the GC and the U25 despite his lack of mountain support his team's superb TTT and his overall strength won the day.
Vanhoucke takes the Points jersey with Carapaz taking the KOM jersey in a strange race for him but thrilling to watch.
