Paris - Nice - Stage 7
roturn
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PT/PN/mg24_pn_07_PCM1154.jpg

Todays stage might deliver the biggest gaps. At least the final climb is a real proper one, while yesterday the amount of climbing early was more dominant than the smaller top finish.

Top favourite after yesterdays performance must be Pogacar.
Haig looked best of the rest and almost matched him, while Phinney, Eastman and Latour all showed some weakness. McNulty, Galta, Warchol and Faglum KArlsson then again looked decent again.

Time gaps are even more interesting post today as the only chance to change something is the TTT tomorrow and there the teams really look a lot different strength wise, so some riders, in especially Galta, Latour but also Phinney or Haig need to make sure to get a gap in comparison to Eastman or Pogacar with McNulty also having a bit of a TTT advantage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PT/PN/mg24_pn_07_PCM1155.jpg

5 riders in todays break and it`s a decent one climbing wise.
Best placed with +5'15 is: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/rab.png Tolhoek
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/eve.png Rachid
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/eav.png Kirsch
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/evo.png Krasts
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ziz.png Conci

Some of them not having performed very well so far and today is their chance to improve their scoring.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PT/PN/mg24_pn_07_PCM1165.jpg

Cedevita had full control all day with 7 riders ahead of Pogacar at times.

Though with 10 km left and the climbing starting properly (full climb is 15 km on 6,7 %, whereas the final 10 km are hardest), the gap is still at 3'45 with Krasts being the first to be dropped now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PT/PN/mg24_pn_07_PCM1169.jpg

Polar is really working hard today with Mas and Krul being included in the chasing at the climbs start.

The first to attack though is a rider, who indeed looked strong yesterday: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mol.png Haig goes with 7,5 km left. Bold move. The peloton still having 70 riders, so quite a lot of strong domestiques as well.

Mas continueing to chase while Pogacar, Phinney, Latour and others are right behind. The gap never really went up a lot.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PT/PN/mg24_pn_07_PCM1176.jpg

It basically took just 5 km to melt most of the gap. Kirsch is the last rider in front. The others are dropping and are about to be passed by the favourites, where we see some movement already.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PT/PN/mg24_pn_07_PCM1178.jpg

No other than Pogacar himself is attacking at the 5km mark after catching Haig again.
Behind the Aussie only Phinney, Latour, McNulty, Galta left!

Eastman is dropped! But he is with team mate Lopez Nolasco, who is chasing a lot now. Also with him Rodrigues, Stüssi, Warchol and the two Polar domestiques plus Faglum Karlsson, Hirt and others.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PT/PN/mg24_pn_07_PCM1190.jpg

4,2 km and after Pogacar also wasn`t able to open a gap, it`s Phinney with his first attack. He must feel a bit better than yesterday. The yellow jersey and McNulty are first to react this time and it`s the moment Kirsch also is just ahead.

It was the last attack for the moment and the GC riders seem to recover a bit. Phinney, Pogacar, McNulty and Haig in the first rows. Kirsch was able to gain a bit on them again and also Eastman was brought back by his team mate, well done. With him Conci also joined that group.

30s later Rodrigues, Hirt, Warchol, Novak, Faglum Karlsson, Stüssi.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PT/PN/mg24_pn_07_PCM1198.jpg

2,5 km and Kirsch is finally caught. Though the pace was still not very high as more and more riders made it back. The actual scenario of huge gaps with ~5 km to go is right now not that realistic anymore.

Faglum Karlsson, Warchol, Rodrigues for example made it back, Hirt still in group 2.

Pogacar though decides to accelerate again, similar as he did yesterday.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PT/PN/mg24_pn_07_PCM1202.jpg

Riders looking exhausted appear and Pogacar still fresh attacking another time.

Surprisingly 2 riders looking most exhausted are Phinney, who is in 2nd position though and Haig, who already is at the end of that group!

Meanwhile Eastman up to 3rd position looking really well again.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PT/PN/mg24_pn_07_PCM1205.jpg

It`s a fighting for gaps now. No riders wants to lose the front wheel, the only rider still accelerating though is Pogacar. He wants his 2nd stage win and the best GC chances.

Eastman in 2nd right now ahead of Phinney. Then Latour, Warchol, McNulty and others.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PT/PN/mg24_pn_07_PCM1208.jpg

Huge win. No.2. So after 5 Aker wins it`s 2 Pogacar wins now. With a great TTT setup his chances for the final GC are looking very well.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PT/PN/mg24_pn_07_PCM1209.jpg

Eastman, Warchol and Phinney next. For first this is important to gain a bit of time after yesterday. His team should carry him even more tomorrow.

Warchol is the huge surprise here. 2 strong finishes, master of energy management it seems.

Phinney again not able to match the new generation but still being up there. 17s for those.

Then another 10s for Latour, McNulty, Novak and Haig, who really was lucky to not lose more today.
Also Rodrigues, Galta, Faglum Karlsson and Hirt in this group. Some with a strong finish.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PT/PN/mg24_pn_07_PCM1212.jpg

Stüssi at +59 not too bad neither as 13th, ahead of Kirsch and Carboni and many support riders.

GC wise Pogacar with a strong TTT setup having a 65s gap, which should be enough normally.
Then it`s getting close. Haig still 2nd but only 14s left against McNulty, another 4s to Phinney and another 8s to Warchol, +2 Eastman, +1 Latour.

Eastman surely with big potential to gain with his setup and also Phinney could attack the riders ahead.
